Review: In 2003, amid a shifting landscape of closing record stores and evolving electronic music genres, Phonica Records emerged as a haven for dance and electronic music enthusiasts. Founded by Simon Rigg, Tom Relleen, and Heidi Van Den Amstel with backing from The Vinyl Factory - Phonica aimed to be a welcoming hub for all genres. Starting quietly, the shop gradually gained a strong reputation, fueled by the founders' ties to Koobla Records. Phonica thrived in its early years by championing emerging genres like electro house and minimal-micro house from labels like Kompakt and Perlon. In 2007, the Phonica record label was born, evolving into a platform for both staff and emerging talents, featuring early releases by now-established artists such as Peggy Gou and Four Tet. In 2023, celebrating its 20th anniversary, Phonica showcases its journey with 20 Years Of Phonica - a compilation boasting 18 exclusive tracks from established and rising artists across the label's diverse musical spectrum. Review: It's that time of the year when labels look back on their releases and offer-up 'best of' collections. Dirt Crew's effort is relatively slender at just seven-tracks deep, but pleasingly high on quality - itself a reflection of the German label's strong 2021. After opening with the sparkling, humid and sun-kissed deep house warmth of Clive From Accounts' gorgeous 'Gravitate', the collection flits between high-grade sample-house pleasantness (Harry Wolfman), piano-laden, synth-bass-propelled goodness (Marcus Holder), jaunty early Floating Points revivalism (Idan Hana with Black Loops), percussive and bass-heavy hedonism (the thickset sounds of Love Will Say No), ultra-deep haziness (ReFelt) and garage-influenced early morning positivity (Dan Only remixing Clive From Accounts). Rock solid!

Review: Harry Wolfman seems to save some of his best material for Dirt Crew Recordings, a label he first joined four years ago. There's certainly plenty to savour on his fourth EP for the long-serving German imprint, with the sometime House of Disco Records and Toy Tonics man sashaying between sparkling, sample-heavy deep house headiness (the sun-kissed treat that is 'Walk With Me', piano-and-strings-laden ambient bliss ('Phlosto Paradise' and Mona Vale collaboration 'Courage'), bass-heavy breakbeat house dreaminess ('Sly Contrast'), jazzy and loose-limbed downtempo beats (the Indonesian folk music-goes trip-hop flex of 'Workit Shep') and the pretty much impossible-to-pigeonhole immersive warmth of 'A21z'). An excellent EP all told.

Review: As its' rather matter-or-fact title makes clear, this 15-track opus gathers together some of the finest remixes released on Dirt Crew Recordings to date. It's well worth a listen, featuring as it does an attractive mix of loopy, bass-heavy hedonism (Nachtbraker reworking The Revenge), sumptuous NYC deep house warmth (the legendary Kerri Chandler adding a chunky new spin to Dam Swindle's Mayer Hawthorne hook-up), analogue-rich hypnotism (Mark E re-imagining Chymera), rushing brilliance (Strip Steve flipping Lorenz Rhode), jazz-house-goes-hip-house (Fouk re-framing A Bunch of Guys) and much more besides. We're particularly fond of the remixes by Morning Factory, Art of Tones and Jesse Futerman, though the quality and variety is so good throughout that picking out highlights is genuinely difficult.

Review: An artist long associated with the Dirt Crew label outta Germany, Harry Wolfman turns in the deep, dubby, sometimes ambient and discofied Always 3 EP. Across five tracks it dips into the blurry sunshine and water music of "Step by Step" to an uplifting and piano-active lead track "Speaking Raman". Softly distorted and floating jungle makes an appearance in "A Way You Come Home To Me (feat Christian Crow)" alongside some dirty yet polished electro in "Green Trees". A sweetly ambient title-track pulls at the strings of nostalgia in a EP that takes as much inspiration from Modern Love as it does Smallville or of course, Dirt Crew.

Review: Sometime House of Disco, Dirt Crew and Omena artist Harry Wolfman is the latest artist to appear on Phonica-backed imprint Karakul. He begins in suitably warm and woozy mood, wrapping lilting horn lines and sun-kissed keys around sweaty beats on the Chaos In The CBD-esque opener "SMBC". There's more relaxed jazz trumpet to be enjoyed on the even deeper and hazier "Eva" before Wolfman changes direction a little on the thrusting grooves, foreboding riffs and bluesy samples of "Obi 1". Arguably best of all, though, is "The Ritual", where drifting motifs, chiming melodies and spacey electronics float around a bongo-laden, ultra-organic deep house groove.

Review: On their Deep Love 2018 compilation, you'll find label stalwarts to newcomers alike for respected Berlin imprint Dirt Crew. Their seventh compilation in the series, the label claims that it is the most complete in terms of sound and flow - and will blend in perfectly with that laid back, late summer mood. From moments of dusty and chilled-out deepness courtesy of Lorenz Rhode or Felix Leifur, lo-slung acid jams like Ponty Mython's "It's All Understood" or funked-up disco house like Frenchman S3A's "Modern Soul". Elsewhere, we have got the kind of slinky and sensual tech-house you've come to expect from the label - best exemplified by Canadian Dan Only or Jaxx Madicine's particularly sublime "Blue Bird". Essentially, it's more of the fine quality you've come to expect from this house music institution.

Review: Following a whole string of dope dispatches on the likes of Dirt Crew, House Of Disco, Lost My Dog, London's Wolfman makes his debut on Dutch deep house imprint Outplay. Four cuts in total, as always with Harry, both vibe and variety are the main priorities. "Hitch" is a loose-grooved hazy strutter with alluring percussion, "Pigs In Blankets" is as tasty as its name suggests with velvet falsettos, dreamy pads and slinky sleazy bass, "Nemoto" is the stone cold jacker of the pack with powerful filtered licks and a beat that you never want to quit. Finally "STS 136" bids us adieu on a sub-100 slo-mo strut. Heavy in the reveries with deep woozy flourishes, it's the perfect conclusion to yet another perfect EP from Harry. Bon voyage.

Review: Whether delivering slo-mo disco loop jams, heady deep house groovers or boogie-powered improvisations, Harry Wolfman can usually be relied upon to bring the goods. There's certainly plenty to enjoy on the producer's first EO for Toy Tonics, not least the lolloping, sample-heavy goodness of opener "Stromboli", where soulful vocal snippets, jammed-out Amp Fiddler style synths and sumptuous chords amble around a brilliantly loose deep house beat. Wolfman goes deeper still on the dusty warmth of "The Rickest of Rick" - all elastic jazz-funk bass, tactile stabs and heavily manipulated vocal samples - before donning his Speedos for a shirtless romp through jazzy deep house/disco fusion on the decidedly sun-kissed "The Accord".

Review: Berlin's Toy Tonics present Mushroom House - a series for 'Indie Afro Disco House' now in its fifth edition. Stockholm's Art Alfie made a lot of great records with partner in crime Mr.Tophat and is part of the Studio Barnhus crew. His deep and minimalist slow burner "Dance To The Conga" will hypnotise you into submission. Harry Wolfman has released on Lost My Dog, Under the Shade and Dirt Crew - and is a specialist in that they call 'underwater house'. He presents a dusty, urban flavoured jam here called "Downstream" which wouldn't have sounded out of place on a label like Money $ex. There is also great track by The Barking Dogs - two guys from Milan who run Serendeepity Records. "Mamarracho" is a raw, old-school house jam featuring Marcelo Burton's sleazy deadpan vocals. Lastly, a 'psychoboogie' jam by Jacky Mingo and Kapote in the form of "Make It Hot" was made in three hours in Berlin last summer, while 42 degrees in the studio!

Review: Following a loan move to Dirt Crew, Harry Wolfman returns to longtime home House of Disco. Happily, there's much to enjoy on the producer's first outing for the London label in two years. He begins with the smiling warmth of "Epiphany 5", a rolling chunk of P-Funk-meets-disco-house fusion full of whizzing synth lines, rubbery synth bass and jammed-out keys. "Y'Sul's Ball" sees him jog into bouncy disco-funk edit territory - think sweaty, live-sounding percussion, sweet jazz-funk flourishes and hard-pressed horn lines - while "Ulbis" doffs a cap towards the likes of Chaos in the CBD and Mall Grab via a dusty, jazz-fired deep house workout.

Review: Since making his mark via some fine releases on House of Disco, Harry Wolfman has delivered top-notch material on Lost My Dog, Secret Reels and Dirt Crew. Here he returns to the latter label with another five reasons to be cheerful. EP buyers can choose between the dreamy, dusty, fluid and percussion rich deep house bliss of "Fermi", the rich and spacey dancefloor shuffle of "Ice Thin", the fiendishly fuzzy, jazz house-goes-disco bump of "Downstream" and the yearning, sun-kissed Balearic bliss of 112 BPM closer "Outro Version". Rising star Jesse Futurman provides a brilliant remix of "Ice Thin" that sits somewhere between vintage Floating Points, Larry Heard and St Germain.

Review: Congratulations to Germany's Dirt Crew Recordings, which marks a century of releases with a celebratory volume of the popular Deep Love compilation series. As befits the momentous occasion, the 11 tracks on offer are all exclusive and previously unreleased. Predictably, there's plenty to enjoy, from the dusty, crackly deep house warmth of Felix Leifur's "Feels Like", and classic U.S garage swing of Ponty Mython's "New York, New York", to the sweet, jazz-flecked haziness of Harry Wolfman's "Rainbow Set", and Huerta's dreamy, glassy-eyed Balearic deep house cut, "Blvrd". Throw in fine contributions from big hitters Detroit Swindle, Nachtbraker and The Revenge, and you have an undeniably essential collection.

Review: Following a recent outing on House of Disco, 20-something London producer Harry Wolfman returns to his regular home Purp & Soul. "On Tap", featuring the attractive vocals of Ella Chi, is a curious beast; a sparse and spaced-out but thoroughly attempt to joins the dots between deep UK garage, jazz, deep house and future soul. Waifs & Strays provide the obligatory chugging, piano-laden house rework, while Vessels emphasize the two-step rhythms while dousing Chi's vocal in picturesque electronics. A solid EP is completed by "Babylon", a woozy trip into late night, bass-heavy deep house territory.
