Review: Since debuting in 2013, Mike Katz has released a lot of music as Harvey Sutherland, flitting between interconnected styles (disco, deep house, jazz-funk, nu-boogie, U.S garage and Italo-disco included) without ever laying down an album of all-new music. Boy, then, is a significant milestone in Katz's career and offers an exploration of what he calls "neurotic funk" - a boundary-blurring fusion of jammed-out analogue electronics and live instrumentation that draws on a multitude of musical styles without neatly sitting in any one pigeonhole. Highlights include the squelchy boogie-soul revivalism of eye-catching DAM-Funk collaboration 'Feeling of Love', the sparkling jazz-funk-goes-boogie sunshine of 'Age of Acceleration', the simmering soul of 'Holding Pattern' (which features his first ever lead vocal) and the futurist post-punk/new wave flex of 'Type A'. In a word: brilliant.

Review: Since forming the Bermuda band last year, Aussie adventurer Harvey Sutherland has delivered a string of loose, oven-hot singles that effortlessly combine the best of boogie, soul, jazz-funk and Beatdown style deep house. With Bermuda providing live drums, keys, guitar and bass, Expectations sees Sutherland continue this fine run of form. It's a mini album chocked full of sparkling, sun-kissed cuts that defy simple categorization. For example, "Coast 2 Coast" expertly fuses a deep house aesthetic with elements of P-funk and jazz-funk, while the deep and spacey "Expectations" and "Spiders" - the latter also blessed with sublime strings - feel more horizontal and Balearic in tone. The strings return on the Metro Area-ish brilliance of "Saturn's Return", which may well be the set's most beguiling moment.

Priestess/Bravado
Priestess - (9:06) 123 BPM Hot
Bravado - (6:19) 123 BPM
Review: This two-track missive is a significant one for Harvey Sutherland. Not only does it mark the debut of his Clarity Recordings imprint, but also his first recorded outing with regular backing band Bermuda. Opener "Priestess" is something of an epic, with Sutherland working a tasty groove - think languid, live drums, thick synth-bass and spiraling electronics - for several minutes before unleashing some killer jazz-funk keys and Harbie Hancock style solos. In contrast, flipside "Bravado" is a much more spacey affair, with regular, sweaty drum fills and groovy live bass underpinning wild synthesizer motifs and twinkling electric piano. Both are dancefloor-ready, but warm and loose enough to please jazz dancers as much as disco heads.

Review: Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Voyage Recordings are a new label with a thing for the deeper side of life. That's all good with us, especially when it's as slickly produced as the four tracks found here. With all their key artists making appearance, we get gently washed out to sea on tranquil waves of slo-mo dance starting with CTEPEO 57's jazzy, stoned-house, the velvety smoocher "Rosebud", the lean and serene bliss-house of "Dreams on Kepler" and moody electro-house closer "Gravy". Slick!
