Review: Around the world in 12 wubs; Alix Perez's superlative 1985 continues to dig deeper and deeper into our psyche with the third volume of their faultless Atlas VA series. As always, the tempos are set to flexible as we slide and glide between the style and speeds courtesy of some incredible names... Cesco brings some proper dark UKG on 'Superstealth', Sir Hiss gets angular with the electroid funk of 'Shower Man Time', Visages go all slinky and futurist on 'Margit' while the bossman Perez and GLXY link up for something truly sexy and soulful with 'Green Lane'. All this and so much more, from Rockwell & Scepticz to Settle Down to Eprom, this is yet another exceptional adventure from the 1985 crew.

Hellion
Review: It's not outlandish to suggest that a collaborative display from both Alix Perez and Headland, two of the most innovative in the game, would cause a serious riot. Across eight tracks of genuine sonic wizardry, we explore the deepest and darkest realms of electronic sound design, from the murky synthesiser players of both 'Mirage' Parts 1 & 2, alongside the earth-shattering sub squelches of 'Shuriken' and mind-numbing rhythmic approach of '1024'. It's a truly wondrous collection, pushing the boundaries of sound design to entirely new realms, with our highlights including the uniquely designed flutters of 'Coco', the gut punching subs of 'Elk's Point', the unique rhythmic jolts of 'Hellion' and of course 'The Grove' in all of it's breathy beauty.

SUBTLE003
Review: The Subtle Recordings team have unleashed a serious beast with this next one as they welcome the combined powerhouse prowess of Ebb and Headland, bringing with them two ferocious new pieces of weaponry for all to enjoy. We open up with the slithering bass curls and alarm-like drumlines of 'Ran', a monstrous twist up of guttural steppers energy. On the flip side to this, we then explore 'Tsar' another syncopated epic, fusing unique synthesiser work with vibrant drum displays and a groovy atmosphere to give us a really cool alternative B-side. Both of these are absolute dynamite and are sure to send any dance into a serious frenzy!

Codex / 2
Review: It's always an exciting thing to witness a new 1985 bombshell land in the store, with this monstrous four track display from some of the most vibrant names in 140 being no exception to that. First up, the blobby warbles and siren-like synthesiser melodies of Ebb's 'Corrosive Soul' arrive with a major bag of oomph, giving us a swampy swinger to kick off proceedings. Next, label maestro Aliex Perez unleashes a sub-heavy warbler in 'Pulsate', pushing any speakerbox to it's low end limit, before Headland re-ignites the party flavour with the slower paced glitchy gulps of 'Guillotine' for a major sonic switch up. Finally, Samba gets busy with a gnarly piece of gristle as 'Six To Six' lets fly a gnarly combination of synths and drum slaps, rounding off the project with a weighty finish.

Atlas / 1

Review: As always with the now infamous 1985 Music imprint, they have assembled the great and good to explore the darker realms of electronic dance music, primarily focussing on dubstep and neurotic drum and bass flavour through this fabulous new 'Atlas' compilation. The names involved are pretty mind-blowing with a roster including the likes of Alix Perez, Drone, Headland, Foreign Concept, Safire, DRS and many more heavyweight names. The entire project has a touch of finesse and musical class about it, from the beautifully processed drum clanks of 'Nibiru' from Visages to the stunning vocal processing of 'Do Me No Good' from Nymfo. There really isn't a low point to this project with the sweeping soundscapes and electronic destruction of Deft's 'Scars' original being a real high point for us!

The Judge
Played by: Alert, Shu, Kismat, Cimm
Review: Innamind return here with another bundle of absolute haters, courtesy of the ever dependable Headland. He lands here with three super original creations, the first of which goes by the name of 'The Judge', a super catchy roller, led by some really original melodic call and response between bubbling synths and guitar lines. Next up, we land within the fantastic percussive displays of 'Camino', a track laced with potent sub energies and electrifying drum work, before we finish up on more dungeon demonics with 'Strays'. Innamind are on a serious roll at the moment and this release further cements their place in the dubstep scene.

Levy
Review: Don Mclean could learn a trick or two from New Zealand's Headland; you could drive a Chevy (or any other brand of motor vehicle) up this "Levy" all day long and it'll never go dry. A true marching tune that gradually rises in intensity without ever losing its stately pace, it's the type of tune that was tailored for nights like System or DJs like Amit. Elsewhere we get seasick with the trippy glitches on "Seen" before going all-out darkside with the haunted humanisations on the foreboding "Cold Warning". Seriously heavy duty stuff as always from Headland. Man's having his pie and eating it right now.

Averted Vision Vol 2
Review: Averted Vision are wasting no time in getting their singular strain of bass music on the map and, thanks to this second collaborative EP, we're getting to know even more talents from the Kiwi land. Ebb's "Cheshire Break", as the name implies, is a distorted and wonderfully loose bundle of sonics tied together by a detuned jungle break at its core, while "Trigger" by Embargo is just some straight-up dubstep nastiness with a grimey touch. Lowquid & Bokeh team up for the percussive missile that is "Signal", but "Sewer Rat" from Akcept is what catches our attention - it's the breaks, you see, they just work every single time...

Review: Bona fide dungeon master from New Zealand, Headland makes his FKOF debut with four cosmic chasm explorations: "Break Out" rides on an alluring industrial texture most likely sampled from an oil rig in the furthest reaches of the known universe. "VHS Weather" takes us even further into the unknown with a woozy, seasick dynamic that's both paranoid and uplifting. "Trade Off" plays with the concept of space as the beats build with a roomier view, allowing the piped tones and waft through like thick green smoke. Finally we hit "Inflekshun". The swampiest side of the square, be prepared as deep washes of tones and textures coat you indelibly. Unique.
