Review: Cormac, the Queer Northern-Ireland born label honcho, returns after a bustling year with a second Polari compilation, "No Tears In The Backroom Vol. 2". Packed with synth-heavy swings, acid basslines, steamy vocals, and an abundance of fun, NTITB Vol. 2 it serves as a perfect introduction to the new year. Cormac, the curator, describes the compilation as a unique family, featuring contributions from label hitmakers like Jordan Nocturne, ROTCIV, and Louis de Tomaso, alongside fresh talents like DJ City, Nimmo, Shay Shaz, Hifi Sean, Joshua James, and Xols. With a 10-track journey that blends anthemic sounds, tapping into nostalgia while staying rooted in contemporary references, No Tears In The Backroom Vol 2 encourages listeners to embark on a dance-heavy pursuit that doesn't hold back. Notably, the label's profits from this compilation go to charity, supporting Doctors Without Borders, a politically neutral NGO focused on treating people in regions where they are most needed, particularly active in Gaza and around the world.

Review: 'Balearic' was never meant to be a genre: originally, it was about playing all different kinds of music regardless of genre. The latest 'Cafe Del Mar' comp recently reminded us all of that and now, just to underline the point, here comes Vol 6 in Midnight Riot's 'Balearic Headspace' series, which packs in everything from Hi-Fi Sean's deep acid bubbler 'Sunshine Dub' to Amma's fine, fragile and near-bruk Sade cover, via ultra-mellow piano house from Hypnotic Lovers, spaced-out midtempo boogie from Shalvoy, 80s Europop stylings courtesy of Frank Karma and more besides... including, yes, a very 'Balearic', female-sung Steve Miller Band cover from Dominic Dawson.

Review: For as long as we can remember, Defected's annual Miami Music Week compilation has done a brilliant job showcasing tracks that we'll be dancing to a lot in the following weeks and months. Predictably, this year's volume is no different. There's the usual mixture of alternative remixes of familiar favourites from the previous 12 months (see David Penn's remix of Sophie Lloyd's gospel disco anthem "Calling Out" and I:Cube's brilliant revision of Peggy Gou's "It Makes You Forget"), previously released anthems (Horse Meat Disco and Amy Douglas's "Let's Go Dancing" and Ray Mang's delicious disco mix of Phenomenal Handclap Band's "Judge Not") and suitably big tunes that will soon become peak-time staples the world over (see the tracks by Bawrut, Low Steppa, Bsicits and Mighty Mouse).

Review: Fresh from scoring a summer club hit with his Crystal Waters-sporting gospel-house smasher "Testify" (re-released in July by Defected with a swathe of fresh reworks), Hifi Sean once again joins forces with Las Vegas-based chum Shalvoy for a second serving of Slipped Discs on Midnight Riot. As with the material showcased on volume one, these are not re-edits, but rather club tracks that cleverly combine elements from familiar disco and boogie jams with their own beats and musical flourishes. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the hard-wired, proto-house jack of Andre Espeut collaboration" Get Down" and thrusting Italo-disco sleaziness of "Jumpy" and "Charlie", to the Konk-in-space heaviness of hypnotic late night roller "Kinky".

Review: "Testify" is part gospel anthem, part joyful house workout; a perfectly formed song with a heart that reaches out to move you. Originally released in 2016 on Sean's own Plastique Recordings, the track has grown and hooked fans organically, making the playlist at BBC Radio 2 and taking on a life of its own. Signed to Defected in 2017, the label wasted no time in delivering a killer remix package. Steve Mac takes the track underground with industrial drums and a killer four to the floor beat. Tom Stephan aka Superchumbo introduces a Latin flavour into his dub version with syncopated drum work and a beefed up bassline that takes the original's gospel elements up a few gears. Finally to complete the package is an original extended version, with two bonus minutes of the uplifting instrumental bridge.
