Review: Almost one year ago exactly, 'international funk barons', Beatnik City introduced us to their first selection of sensitively retouched northern souls gems on the first volume of this occasional series. Now having fully ingested all the goodness contain therein, we're ready for the next helping. There are ten new wonders to get lost in here. Highlights include hearing The Spinners' timeless melodies given a light and breezy Latin makeover on "Disco Shame", BadboE's smokin' breaks rework of a Velvelettes classic on "Breaking Down Motown" and finally Leygo's percussion-lead stomper, "Feels Good".
Review: Bristol-based beat minder Hiphoppapotamus jumps aboard the good ship Booty Fruit with his first full EP. The result is a five-track collection of total party hedonism. "Tropical Wiseguy" adds a slice of spicy bossa magic to the Wiseguys' classic, "Sunshine Riddim" is all about the sassy sun-kissed skanks and breezy organ blasts while "It's Carnivaaal" takes a Trojan standard and takes it to steel drum city. Elsewhere Desmond Dekker gets a rolling big beat makeover on "You Can Get It" while "Yeh Dig" closes the show with a splash of samba magic. Total party stimulation, expect plenty more vibe wallowing from Hiphoppapotamus very soon...
Review: Polish party people Tru Funk continue to champion the very best of the smile-inducing nu-funk scene with this eight tracker that provides plenty of new party breaks. DJ AKA goes for the fun jugular with "Funky Horns" coming across like KC & The Sunshine band back from the musical gym. Hiphoppapotamus gives Curtis Mayfield a post-dubstep going over in "Curtis Is Dangerous", while elsewhere Dizzee Rascal finds his 'Sirens' welded to some vintage funk in Morlack's "Imagination, KRS-One has his sound of da police beefed up with tough breaks by Tosses & Varvez and Warson provides some heavily filtered and tweaked 80s soul-style fun.
