Review: Ame and Ry Cuming are back with their Howling project except this time the woofers have brought with them an album on the ever-excellent Monkeytown / Counter affiliation. Sacred Ground, however, is more of compilation of their work up to the present day, an anthology of their own unique take on house. Tracks such as "Stole The Night", "Signs" and "Howling" have already appeared on previous EPs and have also been remixed by various electronic luminaries for the same label. The rest of the work contains yet more of their poppy dance music, a cross between Nicolas Jaar's work and something that Hot Chip would vibe to in one of their DJ sets. House music for indie rock lovers.
Review: Modeselektor's Monkeytown label has never shied away from releasing music that's a little eccentric and left-of-centre. Even so, few would have expected them to release a minimal techno-inspired atmospheric deep house cover of Nirvana's grunge classic "Smells Like Teen Spirit". The men responsible are - somewhat surprisingly - RY X and Ame's Frank Wiedemann, who don the Howling alias for the first time since their eponymous debut on Transmodern. Their interpretation is one of those records that will divide opinions; those who love it will claim it's a nine-minute chunk of winding, atmospheric house with a beguiling, haunting vocal atop. Certainly, you can feel the pain and anguish in the vocal.
Review: The original version of "Phases" first appeared on Ninja Tune sub-label Counter, and now Innervisions are putting out new interpretations of it. This is hardly surprising as Howling comprises singer Ry Cuming and Frank Wiedemann, one half of Ame and Innervisions co-owner. The only version that re-appears here is the dub interpretation, where a throbbing low end underscores Cumings' quasi-operatic outpourings. Elsewhere, Alex.Do turns "Phases" into an epic, soaring affair, guided by dramatic organs and a pulsing groove. The other versions, from Toto Chiavetta, explore a less obvious direction. On the "Colour Zero" version, layered drums and an organic rhythm underpin the unraveling vocal, while on the "Colour Two" take, flutes and flowing piano lines make for the most suitable accompaniment to Cumings' vocals.
Review: Frank 'Ame' Wiedemann and Ry Cuming's Howling project gets the remix treatment from a stellar line-up. Radioslave's 'Last Communication' version sees the UK ex-pat fuses crashing bells, spellbinding chimes and glorious, sweeping keys for a hypnotic, seemingly unending groove. Berghain favourite Rodhad's remix also centres on a hypnotic feeling; rather than pounding the listener into submission, its clicky groove and understated groove provide the basis for a cavernous soundscape that hangs like a dark tapestry over the arrangement. Finally, there's Kalabrese's remix: like his colleagues, the Swiss producer's version is extended and drawn out, the tinkling jazz licks and acid hiccups fused with a melancholy, booze-soaked vocal that meanders indefinitely.
Review: Kicking off the double-headed mix album opus that forms the third such compilation on their own Monkeytown imprint, this EP offers up the individual tracks for those who crave them. The first disc unfurls in serene electronica tones from such luminaries as Fennesz, Nosaj Thing and somewhat surprisingly The Fall. Akkord's supple, dark techno gets channeled here into a more brooding broken beat excursion, but it's more of an exception to the sweet-natured quality in most of the tracks. When the likes of Howling and Born In Flamez close out the compilation, the tone has shifted to outright indie styles with a Sigur Ros regality about them.

He's been crafting for prolific friends and outstanding musicians for close to a decade, and for Remix Tales Koletzki has now compiled his personal favourites (with some previously unreleased ones too). Features his emotive take on German duo HVOB's "Dogs", Frank 'Ame' Wiedemann and Ry 'X' Cuming's Howling project on "Stole The Night", through to legends such as French Touch pioneers Cassius on "Toop Toop" and NYC electroclash icons Fischerspooner on "The Best Revenge". Keep your ears peeled for his upcoming full length which will be released very soon.
