Review: The artist originally known as Stupid Human, Hugh Mane, has delivered many of his most impactful club cuts on Gerd Janson's Running Back label, leaving his imprint (also called Stupid Human) as a vehicle for a wider variety of sounds. 'Concepts & Sketches', his latest EP, continues in this vein, first offering up a jaunty, musically expansive and undeniably colourful excursion that blurs the boundaries between nu-disco, electrofunk and starry deep house ('The Road Is Bad'), before giving us his take on P-Funk via the Dam-Funk-esque 'Ravi's Groove'. 'Empirical Jams' takes a tactile, intergalactic-sounding approach to deep house dustiness, while closing cut 'Landing Zone' is a wonderfully glassy-eyed and vibrant take on spacey synth-funk.

Review: Any time that DJ Harvey gives us a sneak peek into the current contents of his record bag - sorry, USB stick - is a cause for celebration. As you can imagine, we're cock-a-hoop that he's decided to deliver a follow-up to his superb 2017 compilation "The Sound of Mercury Rising". As with its predecessor, volume two offers a giddy skip through chiming, synth-heavy original Balearic classics (Mandy Smith, Hugh Mane), weirdo European disco (Marta Acuna), evocative electronic soundscapes (System Olympia), blue-eyed synth-pop (Pamela Nivens), drum machine-powered Middle Eastern madness (Switchdance's sublime "Arabian Ride")and a swathe of tasty contemporary cuts (the jaunty jazz-funk of Midlife, Das Komplex's ace "Slap", Nu Guinea's splendid "Je Vulesse" and Peaking Lights remix of Land of Light being the highlights).

Review: London's Hugh Mane, AKA Stupid Human, returns to his semi-regular home of Running Back toting four seriously deep house jams. Opener 'Child Of Love' is a hypnotic, synth-y affair redolent of Larry Heard or Ron Trent, while 'Everybody Question' treads similar ground but has a slightly more electro-like feel. 'Vintage Voodoo' is another synth-heavy cut with Italo leanings and a dose of the John Carpenters, while finally 'Free To Spend' is a darker, bass-heavy affair built for the warm-up or very late play. Peaktime fodder for the high street meat markets this definitely is not, but the headnodders and herbalists will find much to enjoy.

Review: The Late Night Tales crew are certified specialists when it comes to compilations and the label have quite the catalogue behind them, featuring mixes by the likes of Bonobo, Belle & Sebastian and even Fatboy Slim. This time the compiling credits are anonymous, meaning that the label have taken it up to themselves to compile this After Dark Nocturne release. The tracks are unmixed, as is usually the case, so you can pick and mix as many as you like, or simply go for the whole lot! There's plenty of gold in here and the compilation spans quite a diverse set of music from the shady house of Tornado Wallace to the Italian pop of Adriano Celentano on "L'unica Chance". There's also some more minimal numbers by the likes of Alex Metric, gnarly electro beats by Hotel Motel and plenty more. Dive in, it's a guaranteed party bomb.

Review: Killer debut on the Stupid Human label from System Status and Hugh Mane! The more attentive diggers out there will recognise System Status from a pair of excellent 12"s on his own Night Sweats label and he's also contributed to the Horn Wax cause. "Hands" finds the Cambridge based producer in fine form, laying down a crisp, boogie indebted production that has one of the warmest basslines in some time. Inskwel is a good choice to remix the track, given his own boogie flecked tastes and the Australian producer turns in a wonderfully gritty slowed down take that complements the original. Following his debut for Gerd Janson's Running Back, (not so) mysterious Hugh Mane provides "Up Synth Creek With A Greek", based around a naggingly familiar recycled melodic refrain that will nestle right in your head.
