Review: With the year drawing to a close, there is no doubt in anybody's minds that the Four40 team have put together another spectacular year of content. They have decided to celebrate this with another top notch compilation, with '11 Years Of Four40' exploring some of this year's biggest releases. The company the LP keeps is pretty outstanding, with the likes of Burt Cope, MPH, BWK Project, KASTLE, Jakobin, Papirus, Tuff Culture, Yemi and many many more all getting involved. As always with Four40 however, we have some very specific favourites we want to dive into, first off with Tee Vis & Phoebe Freya's super catchy singalong 'On You' absolutely smashing the charts at the time of its original release. We also can't miss our Royal Flush's fabulous rework of 'Gettin' Your Love' from George IV, WZA's Don't Wanna Give Up' and of course the Hybrid Theory rethink of 'Like You' from Blakk Habit, which to this day still receives reloads in the dances around the country. Another fabulous year for the Four40 crew!

Review: The quality and consistency of the Four40 release schedule over the last couple of years has been near enough unrivalled, especially when it comes to their incredible line of UKG drops. Next up from them we explore some of the best bits of that run. Just looking at the artists involved is enough to get any selector salivating as we see fantastic inclusions from Deadly Habitz, Patrick Kane, Kells, Yemi, Burt Cope, Vital Techniques and so many more. There are a couple on here that have really stood the test of time in our eyes, including the Hybrid Theory remix of Blakk Habit's 'Like You', which has been causing damage in the dances ever since the raves began to reopen. We would also include Joe Burger & Dread MC's wicked collab 'Vibe' in that list of top tier inclusions, alongside George IV's 'Gettin' Your Love' and of course 'Faithful' from BWK Project. More power to the Four40 crew, who continue to impress at every turn.

Review: Well, when we saw this title land in the store we were as surprised as anyone to see that Four40 Records, one of the most active and exciting UK bass labels across the full breadth of 2020 has just turned 10 years old. This is a pretty outstanding achievement, for a label that is still at the forefront of it's sound to this very day. The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape. We also get to hear a bag of exciting new exclusives from the newer breed of the Four40 roster, including music from The Phat Controlla, Blakk Habit, Lucas Maverick, Gemi, Badger, Patrick Kane, Yozhi, George IV and more. What an incredible way to round off the year!

Review: As the second in a quick fire run of releases, we see Hybrid Theory make their return to HTMusic for another wavy two track drop, this time focussing in even more heavily on the rawcus side of UK bass music. Firstly, we take in 'Go Loco', a heavy hitting bass slap, driven by it's grizzly lead synth textures and bubbly drum designs. This really is Hybrid Theory at their buzzing best, as we then move into the B-side with 'AWOL'. This one switches up the vibe with pounding sub-lines and hard hitting kick slaps, giving us the perfect contrast from the a-side.

Review: It's most certainly been a long time coming, but we are very excited to see Four40 founders: Hybrid Theory expand their label empire as they launch their own self titled imprint in preparation for a rapid-fire run of releases. We kick this one off with the title track 'Take Flight', a dancefloor inspired warbler, topped off with SG's hosted vocal style, perfect for a switch up in the rave. On the flipside we dive into the slightly quicker bass pulsations of 'Gotti', which lays down an array of hard hitting metallic synthesizer madness, atop groovy rolling rhythms and shimmering sub pressure.

Review: Birmingham based UK bass heavyweights Hybrid Theory return to Four40 with a slightly different approach on their new single entitled 'Lust'. This one comes complete with airy, electronically affected vocals, bouncy drum arrangements and spectacularly swung bass synths. Four40 is an imprint known for pushing innovative bass music and that certainly shows no sign of stopping if they continue to push releases of this calibre.

Review: Wooii! Get ready for the reloads, you're going to be hearing 'Repent' a lot. With its hard knocking beat reminiscent of Whisper Twins classics and a shuffling house beat it's been designed for the dance, Hybrid Theory's stroke of genius hear however is the weird, maybe even backwards sounds which swiftly zip though the tracks textures. We can't quite put our fingers on what this sound is but we suspect there'll be some attempts to recreate them. 'Atomic Bomb' sounds distinctly Midlands, it has that bassline vibe. And it's because of this eclectic skill set that Hybrid Theory is one of our favourite producers in this genre.

Review: Hybrid Theory and the Stanton Warriors, both ridiculously talented when it comes to pounding, cerebral breakbeat and electro-minded house, are herein remixed by a pair of relative newcomers in what is surely a pair of summer keepers...that is if you're up for turning your dancefloor into a state of utter euphoria. Tru Fonix transforms "Under The Lights" from pleasant banger into deadly party bomb, made all the more real by the tune's grizzly percussion drops and chunky low-ends; Francois and Louis Benton's version goes for the jugular with its swinging, penetrative curbside bass that will undoubtedly receive the rewind treatment in an excessive manner. Naughty.

Review: Stanton Warriors have been on a mission to bring us the finest broken beat and heavy bass on Punks Music since 2001. Here the debut volume of the their new 'Punks Selection' series is curated by Mafia Kiss and focuses in 'on the deeper/stripped sounding side of the label's roster'. There is a whopping 22 track featured, as well as a one-hour DJ mix. Highlights include the urgent, haunted bounce of "The Oracle" by Leda Stray, the sultry, late night breakbeats of "K2" by Aloka and the scattershot ghetto beats of "Check Me Out" by Sly One.

Review: Midlands bass duo, Hybrid Theory, were only recently up in the dock on trial for their murderously killer low-end frequencies. Seems that they must have got off on a technicality as they are already back out and ready to offend again. This new split single features two typically uncompromising productions. "Fatality" features knife-sharp hi-hats, buzz saw bass and positively lethal drops a plenty. "The Edge" meanwhile boasts skippy breakbeats, merciless bass bounce and even some string samples just to shake things up a little.

Review: It appears that Birmingham duo Hybrid Theory are in the dock being accused of the heinous crime of peddling bass so raw and low that it's a threat to society. "Life" is as ominous as the court sentence it refers to - all moody bounce, sinister shuffle and animated sonic interjections. Positively criminal in the best possible way. Elsewhere "Selecta" gets nastier with bottomless growls, ethereal synths pads, big build-ups and choppy vocals. The most evil jam, "Code 3" is left to last, and as such no dancefloor is safe. Hybrid Theory we find you guilty as charged!

Review: With releases on Mad Decent and Southern Fried to their name, Birmingham duo Hybrid Theory are fast becoming stars in the all-action world of bass music. Here, they continue their hard-to-define explorations, which variously doff a Snapback to grime, UKG, UK funky and deep house. Opener "Drop To The Max" gets things rolling via pulsating sub-bass, cut down rave stabs, locked in house beats and an almighty breakdown that should get hands rocketing skywards on the dancefloor. "Raw Sex" is an altogether more robust proposition, with dirty great bass and grime electronics wrapped around a hissing UKG rhythm. Finally, Hybrid Theory break up the beats a little on "Dollars", which is impressively sparse in its production, but no less effective. Once the bass and watery melodies take hold, you'll be hooked.

Review: Such was the dancefloor decimation caused by Hybrid Theory's recent crowdpleaser King Kong Riddim, they've decided to do it all over again! "King Kong 2.0" is a souped-up accelerated version of their anthem that now manages to merge tech-house, ominous orchestration, hysterical vocal samples, 4x4 bassline grooves and hip-hop beats. Wow!

Review: Northern darkstepper Kilner steps up to curate the second Four40 compendium, and he's looted the most exclusive of vaults to create a collection that's wholly unique to him. Tightly sprung in unreleased cuts and dubs, it's sharp-tailored document of where 130 bass music is at in the UK right now. From the lean groaning two-step shuffles of Hybrid Theory's "Tempering" via the warehouse-battering tubular bass and twisted vocal flexes of Adjected Deleted & Scullious's "Enemy" via the murderous grumblings and bounce-bass badness of Fogg & The Bumpy Fool, Kilner's so on point right now he sleeps on a bed of nails. Review: There's no stopping Midlands bass duo Hybrid Theory right now, what with their Four40 label putting out its first artist compilation and yet another big club anthem in the shape of "That's What It Is". What it is, is a scalpel-sharp trap-hop jam with heavy bass and undertones of grime courtesy of some spitfire MCing by Trilla. There's also some different edits and an instrumental included, with the "Heavy Radio Edit" which is anxiously sparse and riddled with the shrill delivery of Lady Leshurr.

Review: The inimitable Hybrid Theory drops quite a number on the Party Like Us imprint, providing what quite possibly some of his freakiest material to date. "Take Me Up" is the bomb here, where HT lashes in a bunch of abrasive snares of a broken house beat that's strictly for the floor - those seductive vocals riding over it are the cherry on the cake. Check "Drege" too, whose low end is about as gnarly as we've heard from the man.

Review: Birmingham's Four40 have done it again. This time however, it's a compilation affair, featuring their most interesting artists. As per usual, the sounds are sparse and varied, held together only by their potent low-ends which really burst through on proper systems. Juno favourites Cloaka and Killjoy make an appearance, but there's plenty of quality from all corners of the throng. Review: Hybrid Theory returns to Four40 with his most substantial work to date, the five track Tropics EP. The title track more than lives up to its name, an infectious combination of bright UK funky synths, soca rhythms, heavy bass and tropical melody, "Top Boy" combines thick square wave bass with deep house stabs, while "Grime Alarm" is as raucous as its name suggests, switching up the energy between sections with crafty rewinds that lead into hands in the air rave moments. "Pita" strips things back with its simple combination of rattling percussion and deep subs, while closer "I Believe" takes a rolling flex and combines it with glittering keys and expert vocal manipulation.
