Featuring cuts from all previous X instalments, plus the extras that all landed in the last few weeks, the 27-track strong set is a great snapshot of where both the label and underground drum & bass is at right now. If you're into that deep dark rumbling minimal futurist vibe then every track is a highlight but essentials include Visages immense 'Polarity Code', Sili's precision springer 'Gallop', the cosmic twisted synths of Wingz's 'Broken Path' and Wreckless's tense and sobering 'Don't Want To Forget How Your Voice Sounds'. X marks the spot.

Review: Two things in life are guaranteed, Critical Music remaining as consistent as ever and Hyroglifics continuing to push the boundaries further than ever though sonically possible. This latest album sees a truly vibrant collection put on display, exploring the farthest stretching reaches of the Hyroglifics sound, from the thumping half-time sweeps of 'Sing To It' alongside Nah Eeto's crispy vocal display, to the sub-smashing LFO crunches of 'Juggin' and more party-driven atmospherics of 'Late Ones'. We see a number of additional vocal appearances across the project, with Yeo Limone, Black Josh, Lyza Jade and Fuex all delivering unique and inspiring performances. With such a wide array of sonic mastery on display, it's difficult to pick favourites, but the sharpened synthesiser twangs of 'Burnt Tongues' and roller-inspired rumbles of 'You Got It' would be two immediate standouts.

Review: 2018 is the second year in a row that Critical Music dropped a surprise release for us on Christmas Day, 2017 seeing the Modified Sonics album full of VIPs and exclusive remixes. New Energy Vol.1, however, is a totally different deal and that's because it's 18 brand new, exclusive tunes from those deep inside the Critical camp and those just entering it. The whole roster is represented: Kasra, Enei, Mefjus, Emperor, Foreign Concept, The Upbeats - and so on. But, excitingly, there's new talent in the form of Bou, Synth Ethics, Simula, Kanine and more. Mefjus' remix of 'Projections' arguably takes the cake as the best tune on here - absolute murderation. This is Critical's statement of intent for 2019.

What a way to kick off a new year: Modified Sonics sees the entire Critical troop go to town on each other's work and celebrate the label's 15+ year contribution to the game. No stone unturned, no shoe unthrown; from long-demanded VIPs such as Emperor's sharp update on "Infrasound" and Mefjus's VIP of "Disrupted" come well-deserved re-ups of classics such as Binga's fuzzy take on Serum & Bladerunner's "Who Jah Bless", Benny L's gut-troubling twist of Enei's "Mosquito" and a crucial twist of Rockwell's breakthrough gamechanger "Underpass" from none other than Perez. With loads more dopeness from the likes of QZB, Hyroglifics, Klax and many more, this is one of the best V/A albums Critical have ever put together. Essential.

Review: Four-to-the-floor, let us hear you roar... Fracture's Astrophonica goes into techno overdrive with this crucial collection of 4x4 inspired jams. With cuts from the bossman himself, Lewis James, Addison Groove, Moresounds, Sam Binga and Om Unit (under his Philip D Kick alias) all running rampant at around 160BPM there's a heavy stench of hardcore rolling throughout this unique collection. Highlights include the acid funk frenzy of Addison Groove's "Redeye", the ghettotek badness of Binga & ONHELL's "A Mighty Quest" and the late night 23rd century car chase vibes of Lewis James' "Kit5000". These are just a handful of examples of the truly unique fusions on offer here. Astrophonica are way ahead of the game right here.

Review: All talk Plenty of action: Hyroglifics returns to Critical with a devilish collection that's perfect right down to the artwork. "All Talk" is a real carnival creeper, all paranoid and tripped out. "Persuade" sits firmly on the grime side of the tracks with a cool late 90s Timbaland iciness to the beats, "Vision" is a caustic jungle stepper with barbed truthisms from the man like DRS while "Hanging On You" is shows off Hyroglifics equally touching soulful side. Finally, "Delusions" is the gully halftime joker of the pack while "More Or Less" brings us both back to the foundations and way into the future with its spine-melting intro before alien FX and wave textures. Hyroglifics best release to date, no question.

Review: The Hooversound Recordings team have been making quite a bit of noise of late, so to see this latest project drop from both Hyroglifics and Sinistarr immediatly filled us with excitement. We firstly jump into 'Turbo Island' as Hyroglifics rolls out a high energy bleep-fest, before leaping into three weighty collaborations. The shuffling dub echoes and high energy drums of 'BS6' kick us off in good stead, alongside the glistening breaks of 'Turn It Up' and powerful sub pushes of Sinistarr's solo submission: 'Detroit'. Finally, we take in Scratcha DVA's fantastic rework of BS6, overhauling the track with an incredibly depthy soundscapy feel.

Review: 1985 is undoubtedly one of the most exciting labels in drum & bass and never fails to push music that's fresh and exciting. The Folio/ series is coming to an end, but the third instalment is a worthy final chapter in Perez's four-track VA odyssey. He's roped in some of the scene's best with Halogenix, Workforce, Visages and Hyroglifics all joining Perez himself across the four tracks, and the results are futuristic, danceable and deeply satisfying. 'Unlustrous' is unique in its structure, with flowing, wobbly arrangement that builds and builds over the entire tune into something massively heavy. Hryglifics possibly has the most creative track with 'Day By Day', while Workforce's 'Simple, Positive Things' is relentlessly dark. Top class.

Review: Sam Binga and Hyroglifics represent two of the most ingenious beat makers in the drum and bass, a pair of producers who, through their work on Critical Music amongst others, has pushed the boundaries of the genre. Wicked & Bad represents further encroachment onto the territory of neighbouring genres, including garage and grime, and the pair have managed to stay true to the formula of drum & bass whilst expanding on it with serious finesse. 'Wits End' embodies this mission statement best, as robotic vocals machinate alongside a bouncing garage beat and wallowing low frequency notes to form a technoid funk that's both heavy and sophisticated. There are more traditional jungle flavours on the title track, featuring Riko Dan on top form to provide a vocal overlay to the tune's rambunctious drums and pummelling bassline. More genre bending stuff from the Critical crew.

Review: Kerching! Hyroglifics returns to the mighty Critical and he's paying out major dividends. Four tracks in weight, a million flavours in scope and width, it's another crucially on-point collection. "Cash Out" is a halftime hurter of sickening proportions, "Never Tell Me" sees him teaming up with fellow Critical family member Enei for a proper chainsaw riff stepper, "Unconditional" reminds us of Hyroglifics' most soulful tendencies with lush breezy, misty atmospherics while "Empty Life" closes with a bit of stinky bassline hurrah. Get your wads out.

Review: As you can imagine, Hyroglifics landing on Critical Music for a full three track display is always going to cause somewhat of a ruckus. This collection is a perfect example of understanding the room as the chiming vocal repetition and tweaking 140 synthetics of 'Sing To It' open us up with a fiery feeling of originality. From here, Deft arrives for a slightly quicker paced episode as the crunching synthesiser pounds and the bubbling subs of 'Two For Two' give us another gutpunching original. Finally, we skip back into the 170's with 'Albany Road', a synthetic slapper, switching and alternating between gnarly bass textures and well processed drum punches, giving us the perfect closer to this already intense collection.

Review: Easily one of the most justifiably hyped men in D&B right now, Hyroglifics steps up to the mighty Critical with three boundary-smelting slabs of contemporary jungle. "Bay City Ballers Club" is driven almost exclusively by a robust bassline and steppy, sliced up amen magic. "Killamanaman", meanwhile, takes us deeper into the spacy, stuttering half-tempo drama that the likes of Om Unit and Sam Binga have been dealing of late. Complete with a dual demonic narrative from both the vocal and the middy bass, it's an instant damager. To ensure a strong sense of completion, the final cut is a lush, star-gazing LA beat style wonk-out with bendy synths, far-away vocals and an overwhelming sense of dreaminess. Stunning.

Review: The Critical Music team have pulled out all the stocks for this latest outing, welcoming both Hyroglifics and Deft to the table for an explosive two-track display, readying the ravers for a raucous affair. Firstly 'Two For Two', combines gnarly reese-bass inspired textures with glittering soundscapes to give us an absolute rollercoaster of sonic mastery. From here, we then jump into a more classic sound Critical display as the pair once again combine, this time for a neurotic excursion, doused in lethal synthetic design and sharpened drum textures, giving us a fiery display. Once again, the Critical team impressed!

Review: This single is a meeting of minds between the new and the more established, as long-term Critical producer Hyroglifics and the upstart AC13 combine to produce a single that's choppy and rough in the extreme. Even the softer of the two, 'Mercy and Misery', rests upon spasms of simmering synthetic sauce, the top line to a classic Hyroglifics bassline, one which just oozes class and sophistication. The flip is clubland readiness, with squelching bottom ends that tear into jagged patterns of rocky force, it's an absolute banger made all the better by a jokes sample. Big ups to the Critical crew.

Review: UK D&B producer Hyroglifics should have been on your radar for a while now - circling, waiting for his moment to take over the scene. A regular on Flexout Audio and Peer Pressure Records known for his on-point production and excellent hair, this release showcases the darkest recesses of his mind, which is pretty much what you'd expect from something Proximity picked up. "Ensnare" is a whirlwind of dark energy and samples that punch through the claustrophobia. Push on and MTWN's remix of "Soundboy" tells a similar tale of pent-up dread and frustration, adding a more industrial slant to the original. The perfect soundtrack for any special occasion you might be hosting in a basement club or garage lockup in the near future. You'll be hearing a lot more from Mr Hyroglifics, so for those who don't already know...you know what to do.
