Review: The fourth compilation on Sulk Magic starts in style with "Shrimp Daddy", a dark, chugging piece of electronic disco from label owner Bird of Paradise. It sets the tone for the rest of the collection; Dead Love Embargo drops the low-slung "Transmutation", while Emile Strunz and Kolomensky both venture down an electro-influenced route on the acid-soaked "Casual Violence" and brooding "Raving Raven" respectively. There are some lighter moments, most notably on Dharma's shimmering Italo contribution, "A Quick Passing" and the textured ambience of Stove's "Ocean Loom", but overall the mood is designed for sweaty basements - a feeling that is expertly captured by Ian Blevins' "Fleshworld", a throbbing, rumbling piece of electronic disco.

Review: Over the last few years, Ian Blevins has released a handful of uniformly excellent EPs on some seriously storied record labels, not least Lovefingers' ESP Institute and Aussie imprint Not An Animal. Predictably, his latest outing - a label debut for Man Power's Me Me Me stable - is also rather good. Many will fall for the dreamy warmth of "Serpent", where elongated, alien-sounding chords and gentle acid lines cruise along above a sweaty, loose-limbed analogue house rhythm, while "Unse" is dark, druggy and foreboding with Orbital style lead lines and restless, heavyweight drums. Austin Alto's remix of "Serpent" is as saucer-eyed, breezy and melodious as analogue-rich house music gets, while Kiwi's take on "Unse" mis metallic, sub-heavy and driving with occasional melodic flourishes.

Review: Having spent the last few years quietly building his reputation via decent EPs for ESP Institute, Saft and Keep it Zen, Ian Blevins has had a relatively quiet 2017. This outing on Dave Harvey's Futureboogie Recordings label is only his second release of the year. It is, though, rather good, with Blevins gleefully sprinting between acid-flecked, Italo-disco inspired Balearic house (tidy opener "Round Trip"), rush inducing, organ and acid-driven positivity ("Roland's Rat") and rolling, slow-building late night goodness (the bubbly melodies and elongated chords of "Can You Count My Dream"). The obligatory remix is provided by Lobster Theremin and Uncanny Valley regular Panthera Krause, whose Moroder-on-happy tablets version of "Round Trip" is a warm, hazy and life-affirming delight.

Blind Jacks Journey Tripp.3
YRD - "Dul Doen" - (7:17) 125 BPM
Thom Brooke - "Penway" - (6:22) 120 BPM Hot
Ian Blevins - "AA" - (7:02) 119 BPM
Causa - "Lacanau" - (6:54) 78 BPM
Review: More sumptuous house moves from the Bind Jack's Journey crew on this third round of The Return Trip series which features contributions from a cast of lesser known production talents. There's something immediately gratifying about the emotive weight to opener "Dul Doen" from Yrd, the manner in which the synth lines seem to sear out of the channels grabs you willingly. From here Thom Brooke discards with drums in favour of toying playfully with vast clouds of synthesized texture which still emit a rhythmic pulse making "Penway" a good way to bridge a set. If you buy house music on wax you will probably recognise Ian Blevins from his work as part of Al Gobi; present here in a solo capacity, "AA" finds Blevins laying down a dreamy, loose little jacking number which contrasts nicely with the stripped back icy melodic electro of "Lacanau" by Causa.

The Birds - (8:23) 124 BPM
The Birds (Man Powers Tropical Bastard remix) - (5:31) 124 BPM
Locate Yourself - (6:22) 123 BPM
Review: Ian Blevins has been busy making a name for himself on ESP Institute and Futureboogie, but now he comes to Not An Animal with a slightly different approach that still speaks to the skills the upstart producer has in his sonic arsenal. "The Birds" is a focused, steady-tracking cut for the deeper end of the night, but there's some serious weight in those drums and the heavily processed vocal snippets pack plenty of malaise. Man Power then step up with a "Tropical Bastard" remix of the original, cracking the curtains to allow a little light into the mix but stopping short of over-cooking the mood. "Locate Yourself" finds Blevins in tracky techno mode, and it turns out it's a style he can nail just as easily as the more organic tones he's known for.

Review: This latest missive from Patrick Luca's Saft label sees ESP Institute regular Ian Blevins join forces with label-surfing deep house producer NY*AK. On "Grasscutter", a hazy mid-tempo concoction, the pair successfully joins the dots between woozy, Chaos In The CBD style deep house, and more R&B-influenced bass-house flavours. Their dusty, soul-flecked deep house influences are explored further on the more up-tempo "Good Feeling", while "Work It Out" smartly combines tipsy synth bass and head-nodding disco drums, with rich keys and delay-laden vocal samples. New York-based Bristolian DJ Nature serves up a fine interpretation of the latter track, successfully giving it a looser, warmer and more organic feel via fluid piano lines and hip-hop influenced house beats.

Review: Having delivered a couple of quietly impressive solo EPs for Keep It Zen and Saft, as well as a highlight of Disco Bloodbath's label as one half of Al Gobi, Ian Blevins pops up on Lovefingers' ESP Institute with a pair of tracks that the LA label claim will "boost your Serotonin levels". Certainly, A-side "Hannibal" is a definite mood enhancer, with bubbling, high-pitched electronic melodies and spacey chords riding a fizzing, Detroit-influenced analogue house groove. Flipside "Welcome Aunt Poly" is an altogether deeper and drowsier affair, with rich, stretched-out pads reclining over a shuffling, cowbell-laden rhythm. It feels like the sort of track that could induce a "moment" when heard at the right time, despite its' relatively simple - if not less delicious - construction.

Review: Having previously appeared on Chop Shop Digital and others, British scalpel specialist Touchsoul has decided to launch his own imprint. First up on the label is a split EP featuring a quartet of deliciously summery disco and jazz-funk reworks from Touchsoul and pals. Touchsoul's own contribution is "Floyd's Solution", a deliciously bumpin', low-slung rework of a track previously cut-up by Dr Dunks on his recent Disco Deviance 12". Beaten Space Probe's hustlin' "Slow Down" is probably the highlight, though Manmade Music's lazy jazz-funk groover "I'm In Dub With Nancy" runs it close - as does Ian Blevins' darkroom disco-houser "Feed Le Flame".
