Review: There's a hint in the title here, as theBasement Discos serve up a collection of 20 house tracks with the ivories firmly front and centre. But while the old Joanna might be the thread that ties it all together, there's still plenty of variety on offer, from sprightly jazz-house workouts like AFAMoo's 'The Art Of Jazz' to deep house jams like A Naranjo's 'What Lies To Head' and Foot-Loose's 'Weekend'-biting disco-houser 'LA Piano Mood'. It's not all nostalgic homages to the hands-in-the-air anthems of the early 90s, in other words - though naturally there are plenty of those as well, with Piem's '4Real' one clear standout in that department. Of course, if you're not a fan of piano-based house, it's probably not the album for you... otherwise the 'Paradise' part of the title is entirely justified, nuff said!

Review: A single-track release here from Infrasoul, who hails from Bogota, Colombia and goes by the name of Juan Acosta in real life. Brought to you by London's Tropical Disco label, 'You've Been On My Mind' more than lives up to the label's name, being a sultry, midtempo jam that's distinguished primarily by three of its components: mournful mariachi-like trumpets, squelchy analogue synths straight out of the early 80s electrofunk playbook, and - lending the track a more contemporary feel - an understated and quite heavily treated male vocal with something of a Hot Chip-ish vibe. A very solid summer groove.

Review: With 20 tracks to choose from, there's certainly no space to do a full track-by-track rundown of this seasonally themed compilation from London's Tropical Disco. Suffice to say that, while the emphasis is largely on up-and-coming names rather than the usual suspects (though the likes of Reece Johnson, JB Boogie, Corrado Alunni and Infrasoul should be familiar), the quality standard is set high throughout, and those who like their contemporary disco served with hints of Latin, Afro, jazz and/or funk flavas will find much to enjoy here. The sprightly pianos of David Zero's 'Vanilla', Alunni's groove-a-licious 'Funk Decision' and Rafael Yapujian's ker-razy 'Beats And Hats' would all be good places to start, but you should probably just dive on in and find your own faves...

Review: An interesting disco EP/mini-album here from Colombian producer Infrasoul, AKA Juan Acosta, in that many of the tracks pay homage to classic cuts without necessarily actually sampling or re-editing them. So Roy Ayers fans will spot the 'Ubiquity' bassline that underpins the glorious 'Too Good To You', a Brass Construction classic provides the inspiration for 'Got Myself Together', 'Gotta Move' rocks horn and organ parts based on Curtis Mayfield's 'Move On Up' and 'With Me' nods to Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls' in the guitar department. Whether the same applies to the horns-y 'Jungle Vibin' or the jazz-dance licks of 'The Freeplay' isn't entirely clear, but the latter is a killer either way.

Review: Hailing from Bogota, Colombia, Infrasoul has racked up releases over the past couple of years on labels such as Moiss Music, Spa In Disco, Tropical Disco and Peppermint Jam, and here he returns to the latter with a four-tracker that you can file under 'contemporary disco' or 'disco-house' as you see fit. 'Shine On Me' brings the uplifting, peaktime vibes, 'The Disco Sound' treads a slightly deeper path and rocks some great chorus'd fem vox, 'Blue Calypso' adds hints of tropical and jazz-funk flavas, while finally 'Dare To Come' takes us full circle back into housier pastures, but in a more dreamy, late-night kinda way.
