Review: One of Soul Deep's most prolific and consistent producers returns with five more premium funk affairs. We kick off with a VIP of this summer's piano-licked "Sunshine", "Out Of Reach" pays more attention to the jazzier textures while "Butterflies & Kisses" aligns itself with the Technimatics or Pennygiles's of the world with subtle soul and sparsity, "May Field" rolls out with a beautiful selection of samples in the same way Utah Jazz does so well. Finally we hit "Summer Rio" where a Latin piano riff whisks us off to sunnier climes for the autumn. If you're familiar with John B's short sojourn into Latin D&B around 15 years ago you'll be all over this.

Review: Some say the truth sounds like pain. Others say the truth sounds like angels playing Hendrix covers on glistening harps. InnaSelf reckons it sounds like lush rolling liquid... And we're not going to argue with him. Purebred silver-sided soul, each cut continues the Midlands musician's rich vein of form: "The Sound Of Truth" utilised a classic vocal over a stripped back Calibre-style arrangement, "Dream Rhythm" goes for more a cloud-hopping vibe with a springy tropical synth hook while "Intuition" uses one of rave's most iconic vocal shots over a breezy piano roll to mesmerising effect. Finally we hit "The Citadel". Juicy subs and simple-but-crafty hook, it's one of those tracks the creeps up behind you, licks your ears and runs away tittering. Truthfully impressive.

Review: Gorgeous cinematic rollers from Soul Deep favourite, innaSelf. Starting with the dreamy "Clouds", he nails that sense of weightlessness and movement perfectly with piano repeats and a fluid, driving bassline. "Mercury Rising" is equally beautiful in it's own way, swapping atmospheric movements for a more down-to-earth breaks-driven sound. Taking on jazzy influences in the piano and vocal parts, it's a soul-forward roller with a bit of a kick. A definitely instant favourite with the Soul Deep elite.

Kicking of with yearning, wistful vibes from Low5 in "My Heart" and Passive - "Fall Lines", the tone of this compilation is very much to explore the emotional and cinematic ends of drum & bass. Moving into serious liquid roller territory in the second half of the LP, we meet artists from around the world such as Brazilian Marcio Mouse, California-based Amparo and Cornish D&B upstart Synthetic Journey. It's plain to see Soul Deep's mission statement - the best are worth searching for.

Review: LA-based drum & bass label Soul Deep Recordings is one of the most diverse and prolific out there. Concerning themselves with the deeper side of D&B, unlike many labels who take "soulful" to automatically include liquid, much of this release features tracks focused on the heady early days of drum & bass to fantastically smooth effect. Most, if not all the tracks included are from new, upcoming artists from around the globe and this is reflected in the diversity and energy of the compilation as a whole. Check Disept & Zendi - "Around The World" for early days vintage vibes, Introspection - "HumaNature" for deep, rolling beauty and Remote - "Stars" for some truly old school sounds. Essential listening for those who prefer beauty in their bass.
