Review: Now here's a tracklist full of VIP mixes, special edits, collabs and remixes worth getting excited about. A fine and natural choice for the next round in the DJ-Kicks series, Paul Woolford's inspired Special Request project brings to !K7 an inspired tracklist taking in classic names like Speedy J, Galaxian and Morgan Geist next to Sun Ra! Exclusives in this run down comes from LS1 Housing Authority ("Ultraviolet") and a timeless rebrand by Special Request of chillout anthem "Hayling" - next its '90s drum and bass compartoit "Elysian Fields". A huge mix overall, lend your ears to other tracks by Uziq (aka Mike Paradinis), Australian multi-instrumentalist Harvey Sutherland, to Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse (VIP mix) and other side notes worth mentioning like Psyance ("Gates Of Heaven"), AceMo with "Sequence Of Life", Krystal Klear and Special Request himself.
Review: Lifted from the minds of former record store clerks turned influential DJs and selectors Vladimir Ivkovic & Ivan Smagghe, IDMEMO: A Future Of Nostalgia presents a curation of tracks taken from the pair's time behind the counter. Zoning in on a period where indie rock was colliding with electronic music you'll find oddball rarities from associated Warp acts like The Black Dog and Seelfeel to others by Zugzwang and IF. Discover lost sounds from a bygone era in Passarani 2099's "Ixora", Abfahrt Hinwil's "Tech 7" and The Marcia Blaine School For Girls' "Sometimes My Arms Bend Back". Nothing like a fresh hit of nostalgia for something new.
Review: Some DJs use the opportunity of a DJ Kicks mix to showcase the eclectic nature of their record collections, while others see it as a chance to give an airing to the dancefloor records that have inspired them over the years. Seth Troxler's selection sits somewhere in between. On the one hand, there are impeccable jazz and downtempo moments from the likes of Sun Ra, Herbert (as remixed by Phil Parnell) and DJ Koze, whose "Bodenweich" is an undeniably atmospheric, off-kilter delight. On the other hand, Troxler has picked out some genuinely brilliant, mostly US-centric house selections; deep, soulful and bumpin' fare from the likes of Butch, Kerri Chandler, Jasper Street Company, Mood II Swing and Derrick Carter.
