Intr0beatz aka Reykjavik’s, Iceland native Arsaell Thor Ingvason is a beatmaker and producer with a lifelong love for the groove. From his earliest years delving into his father’s musical collecting and compositions, his hands have shaped a formidable body of work from quality productions to his skillful turntablism and use records to working with old school and vintage samplers. A heady mix of chill out, deep house, and hip hop, it marked an evolution in his music trajectory while building on his roots. Since 2014, Ingvason has released a slew of 12” and EPs on various deep house labels such as Dark Energy, Plastik People, Lagaffe Tales and on his own label, Cosmic Angles.
Intr0beatz is now a staple in Iceland’s recent house music revival as well as playing and DJing in Canada, Europe, South Africa and Japan. After a recent paternity leave, he’s been coming in hot with new releases on SlothBoogie, Stay True Sounds and Moment Cinetique.
Review: Since launching in the winter of 2020, Aterral has delivered a string of quietly impressive releases, including eye-catching EPs from the likes of Black Loops, Retromigration, Idan Hana, Carlo and Westcoast Goddess. For the Berlin-based label's first missive of 2024, they've turned to sometime Moller Records artist and former Icelandic hip-hop crewmember Intr0Beatz. Title track 'The Sounds That Heal' is particularly potent: a groovy, dreamy, warming and thickset chunk of alternately heads down and arms-aloft deep house rich in vintage Larry Heard style electronic bass, woozy chord sequences and crunchy drums. Elsewhere, 'Don't Be Afraid' is a deep, languid and casually jazzy slab of ultra-deep dancefloor excellence, while 'What You Feelin' Right Now' rides along on a more bumpin', bass-heavy groovy while retaining the producer's trademark ambient-influenced pads.
Review: SlothBoogie's 'Dancing With Friends' series, a compilation strand showcasing cuts from both label artists and invited guests, has firmly established itself as 'one to watch'. Happily, the third volume in the series is as on-point as its predecessors. There's much to admire across the 16 tracks on show, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the sun-soaked deep house heat of Philippa's sample-heavy 'Chet's Vibe', the bumpin', post-hip-house hedonism of 'Take Back' by Sudden Moves, the dream house-goes-Detroit techno hypnotism of Ruff Stuff's 'Stab Culture', the deep acid house excellence of Baby Rollen's 'Study in Serenity' and the throbbing excellence of Donald Dust's 'Aftercare'. Throw in killer cuts from a couple of better-known artists - see the contributions from Demuir and the Revenge - and you've got another genuinely must-check release.
Review: Set up as a continuation of their podcast back in 2008, this Russian label joins the dots between jazz various genres. Footwork House Jam no.1 is a homage to the global house culture and the eponymous Moscow-based club night in particular. The idea behind this compilation 'is to provide the fuel for house dance culture and house movement to expand further on' the label claims. Starting off with Baltimore legend Karizma and his jagged groove therapy session titled "Church Chords" there's more quality with Brit Nubian Mindz with the glitched out disco house of "Check Da Discotheque" which will contort you even more with its nifty beat repeat effects. Then it is Intr0beatz with the sexy late night deep house of "That DUB" where he goes for that timeless formula of emotive chords, swing fuelled rhythms and sampled diva vocals to full effect.. but wait for that bassline to drop, like seriously! Finally, Dopeness Galore darling Jacob Otten aka Kid Sublime drops the soulful and life affirming broken beat nu-jazz experiment "Wings Of Love".
