Unite Part 4
Various
Review: D&B supergroup SaSaSaS continue their Unite series with another wedge of wallopers from an exciting range of talents on the fourth instalment of their massive 'Unite' series. What began as a mixtape last month is now being released as tracks for your own sets. Each dispatch has been fire, this edition being no exception. Highlights range from the glitchy swing and bars of Konetix's 'Transcendent' to Harley D's rattling bassline hype-raiser 'Next Level' via A:dan's powerful synth blazer's 'Intensions'. The full range of flavours - this is the sound of a united drum & bass. Watch out for the final instalment coming soon.

Best Of DTR 2019-2020
Various
Review: Digital Terror have had a sick last twelve months and this VA shows off some of their best cuts from the year, featuring acts like Jayline, Dutta, SL8r and more. Those latter two collab in serious style on 'The Pain', which cuts down into the range with fire and fury, angled sharp basses knifing through the frequencies with the grace and decorum of an elephant in heat. Jack The Ripper lands with supreme heaviness on 'Direction Course', Spaow brings the old-school vibes on 'Gallopo' and the collaboration of the album comes from the dream team of Jayline, Bou, Dutta and MC Dino who land with aplomb on 'Pico Skank'. Seminal.

Law Of The Jungle & The Gateway
Review: Short Circuit have a bit of a reputation for spewing out some of the most venomous beats in the business and their talent for pushing some of the best artists on the jump-up spectrum is undeniable. Ironlung is holding up that standard and he's doing it in style, something clear right from the start of this single. 'Law of the Jungle' reels you in with hip-hop driven, rolling energy, that quickly flips into a siren-like wail of pure, stabbing energy that's reminiscent of Annix and insanity more generally. The flip the release is equally aggressive, as 'The Gateway' opens the gate to a hellish landscape of tendrilic basses and powerful forces.

Iron Fist Audio VIP's
Review: Iron Fist is an appropriate name for the label behind this collection of VIPs and, listening through them, you can hear why. This release is a solid envelope of four tunes which demonstrate a serious understanding of jump-up's nastier end, the type of jump-up which some hate but which inspires a passionate love for the genre in others. Jaydan's VIP of Say Nothing is the best example of this, its pointed, jagged-edged basslines are cutting and penetrating at the same time, snappy drums lie underneath and the whole tune is packaged with effortless finesse. Check out the others for some of the hardest-hitting D&B around.

Iron Fist Audio Remixes Volume 2
Review: The next instalment in the Iron Fist Audio remix series is here and it's four weighty cuts in the style the label has become well known for, with Nu Elementz, Jaydan, Ironlung and Total Recall coming through in style on this one. We especially love the Total Recall remix of Tsuki's 'Deranged', which packs a sweet flowing drum line (mate that snare though...), an addition that carries the whole tune forward and is complimented by a diving, swelling back end that takes no prisoners whatsoever. Jump up big gun Jaydan also performs well here, with a spinning take on synthetic force that inches and stabs its way into your ears. Proper moody this.

10 Years Of Good4Nothing LP Part 1
Various
Review: Good4Nothing are turning 10 years old and are celebrating that fact in the only real way you should celebrate a label anniversary: with a big old compilation album. They've gone all-in for this one and raked up 15 tunes artists like Dutta, Ironlung, Slipz and Complex. Dutta' contribution is typically naughty, with a pulsating back end that sits just beneath a snappy drum line that includes a lovely, wooden snare that has just the right amount of bite. Part 1 of this series is a truly hedonistic banger of a compilation which is well worth checking out, we cannot wait to hear what the label has in store for us in Part 2.

The Best Of The West
Various
Review: Wild West Recordings always try their best to replicate the no-holds-barred, anarchic nature of life on the 19th century, American frontier and they do so via the aggressive tones of modern D&B. This is a best-of compilation of tracks that have come out through the label and it puts that ethos on good display, featuring some seriously weighty acts like Nu:Elementz and Ironlung. The former's contribution is especially potent, a gargling display of production intensity and a lesson to all budding artists out there in how to create a knockout jump-up track, its biting bass stabs teaching you all you need to know. Ironlung's tune - 'Dreaming' - is equally as naughty but it rests on a much more potent set of drum hits, giving it an extra oomph that you can certainly hear. The others are just as good - check 'em.

Remix
Review: Jaydan is a well-known name these days, having been smashing the jump-up circuit for a number of years across the UK. Ironlung isn't quite as prolific but that doesn't stop him from making massive tracks and the pair of them have collaborated on two remixes that make for a wicked EP. Jaydan is on remix duties with 'Makes You Wonder' and it's made us wonder how he packs so much sheer energy into his synth lines and the clarity he composes throughout the range is properly sick. Ironlung jumps on 'Time To Die' with ease, getting straight to it with a quickfire intro that descends into a hellishly aggressive mash of bass synths of varying persuasions. Sick release this.

Time Bandit
Time Bandit - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: Cre8 Dnb Music are one of the most prolific jump-up labels around. We regularly feature their releases and they almost always smash it out of the park, this time being no different. Ironlung's 'Time Bandit' is a fiery single that epitomizes the type of jump-up that, in more ways than one, has defined D&B in 2018 - no-nonsense, uncompromising and proudly nonchalant about what you think. It's just pure attitude, dancefloor based music at its best and music that simply does what it wants, there's no pretentiousness or image-orientated concerns - it's just D&B. Big, big tune.

Best Of Dub Damage
Various
Review: This is a big release, both literally and metaphorically. Sitting at 58 tracks, it's clear that the Dub Damage crew wanted to pack as many of their best moments as they possible could into the album. If you're a jump-up fan, think of this as a bit like the holy grail of jump-up and the inclusion of remixes and originals from dons like Original Sin, Annix, Turno and Sub Zero cement that fact. Aside from those legends, DJ Alpha comes through with 'The Man With The Golden Gun', a riotous blend of punched out bass synths, whilst Kre & Basshoven low-key steal the show with 'Toronto Blue'. A fat album this, and a lesson in how to do compilations right.

DIY
Review: London-based producer Michael Roberts, better known in D&B circles as DJ Ironlung or simply Ironlung, serves up two no-nonsense jump-up cuts. But in doing so he treads a fine line admirably, because while both cuts do have the kind of energy and attitude that'll appeal to hyped-up younger floors, he manages to avoid the style's worst EDM-industrial excesses, with the result that both 'DIY' (with a sampled female vocal that's reminiscent of DJ Trend's 'Another Classic' from 1996) and the accompanying 'Immortal' (with an ominous, distorted male spoken vocal) have the potential to reach out beyond the jump-up ghetto.

Give Me A Beat
Review: Quick! Ironlung is about to get Schwifty, he needs a beat and he needs it stat! Non payment of said beat will leave you swamped in metallic bass scrapes, fog horn funk and a tense state of unpredictability for days, maybe even weeks or perhaps years. For more insane, switch flippery and unrivalled energy jump on "Problems". A more classically trained hooky jam laced with some expert vocal samples and a wonderfully swampy bass texture, it's yet another fire starter from the man like Lungy. Wub a lub a dub dub!

Colabs
Review: Next-gen bass meddler loads up his Laid Back Audio pistols for another trigger finger jump-up shoot-out. This time he's rolling deep with fellow gully cowboys, all of whom are expert shooters too. "Scrap Yard" (with Ironlung) has one of the best MC one-bar licks you'll hear this year and a classic Taxman-style feel to the groaning basses, "Never Realised" (with Heskk) croaks with a little Latvian laser magic while "Fox Die" (with Jack The Ripper) contains some of the wettest, strangest bass tones either act has ever conjured. Finally we have "Voodoo Magic" (with Native Instinctz) where all focus is fixed on the sweeping harmonic riff that's not dissimilar to Heist when he's in a naughty mood. Killer co-lab business.

Black Pearl
Review: Heavy breathing intensifies: Ironlung returns to Cre8 with four outrageously stinking peaktime slammers. "Life's A Break" takes a well known rap vocal and wraps it around an abrasive bassline tear-up, "Mutton Dressed As Lamb" pays homage to the matriarch in your family with pure laser venom while "Supper Time" feeds us with high carb, full-fat twisted harmonics. Finally "Jack Sparrow" celebrates the seafaring cult of pirates with a very infectious bassline that's got "sing along" written all over it. Easily Ironlung's biggest release to date. Stay oxygenated!

Squid Style
Review: Wheezy does it! Ironlung fires up his new label for a second outing with two crucial co-labs. Heskk barges the party to assist with the aptly-titled limb-thrower "Squid Style", complete with a naggingly addictive riff. Next up comes the one and only Desire who joins the fray for an uplifting work-out with a really positive harmonic tone to the rising, saw-like bass tones. Pure elevation.

LSD
Review: Finally, a chance for everyone to experience LSD safely and legally as D-Minus and friends take over Profound's first release of the year. Rather than a frolic in a field of strawberry fields, the title track is a little more intense with its bad trip bass blaring with horn-like menace. Deeper into the trip we flex as K-Motionz & Danger do the rusty robot on "Eyespy", Ironlung takes us all for the fools that we are, LBS twists up the styles with a neuro intro and jump-up drop on the battle-ready "Special Forces" and K-Motionz gets his angular grit on with "Orbital". There's no comedown from this.

We Cre8 Vol 4
Review: They might be averaging 2.5 releases per year but man are Blackley's Cre8 killing it. Every single release has been rammer-jammer with talent, ideas, fusions and energy. The "We Cre8" series epitomises this spirit and attitude the best as we're bombarded with heaviness from the off... "Medusa" teases with a starlit arpeggio on the intro before snapping your neck with a waspy bass drop, "War Mongers" is a much fuzzier, no-nonsense skin-scorcher, "Touch Of Generations" fires more lasers than an unruly robot while Jaxx provides balance with the springier funk of "Leaf Of Life". Rounding off with stern spacious bass tones of "Hemp Seed" and the timeless roller "Showdown", this is the best "We Cre8" edition yet.

Recre8 Vol 1
Review: Rewind to December 2015: Blackley's Cre8 lay down the gritty gospel with the second volume of the label's "We Cre8" series. Fast forward to now: two serious remixers have been brought on side to update demonstratively. Firstly Jaydan adds a rasping, alien sheen to the spiky unpredictable riff while Klay throws toxic waste on the riff of "Rampage" to give it a melting, pained aesthetic that will bend all minds within a 20 mile radius. Cre8tive.

Subversive Minds
Review: Heavy breathing junglist veteran Ironlung closes the year the way he started: brutally. With seven releases in between, this is a fitting end to a prolific year: "Atomic" has a "Link To The Past" style hair raising energy, "Jack In The Box" whips up a storm with a techy Need For Mirrors-style bass funk while "Ninja" scuffs the spectrum with a waspy Hazardian riff. Looking for some weirded-out rifle bass? Look no further than "My Style". In the need of more funk and uplift? Look no further than "New Game". Full house.

We Cre8 Vol 3
Various
Review: Easily one of the strongest new UK jump-up labels to have emerged in the last two years, Blackley's Cre8 continues to rep the spectrum with another blistering V/A collection. Highlights include the trippy dual-tone bass riff on Rowney & Propz's "Look Further", the pure gutter-tones of Blackley's "Question", the "Night Flight" style beats and tubular sub on Dorian's "Warface" and the early Die-style bass burps on Fineprint's "Drop Danger". Creativity never sounded so strong.

Dapva 1.0
Review: Guv's Dubz Audio imprint goes from the strength to strength, consistently identifying the originators in an increasingly cluttered market. "DAPVA" is the label's first v/a collection, featuring one of the label's most consistent artists (Hedex) and three label debuts from men who need no introduction. Hedex is all about the heavily coded funk in the riff, Dilate conjures up a cool subby roller with added industrial strength percussion while Ironlong brings the one-note riff hype in a similar way to Tyke or Hazard. Finally, K Motionz closes the show with some subversive drama as the build craftily teases into a hair-raising drop you'd never expect. Damagement.

Barbaric/Accelerate VIP
Review: Remix klaxon: Damage Report takes Ironlung's summer 2015 blunderbuss "Barbaric" and adds a whole new level of drum funk. Maintaining the original spiky riff but injecting a strong swing to the beats, it's a great update on a still-strong banger. For the second reversion Lungy coughs up the goods himself with a VIP twist on "Accelerate" where the riff extends throughout the entire bar. For floors who know the original this will blow minds. Subtly savage.
