Review: J-Felix is the solo moniker of Bristolian producer, multi-instrumentalist and musical wizard, Joe F Newman. Now based in Brighton and quickly snapped up by Tru Thoughts, we now get a solo album inspired by his investigations into all the funk and soul samples heard in the DnB and hip-hop that he grew up with. However research is where the samples end for Newman, instead he layers recordings of his own vocals and instrumental pieces into a beguiling 15 track organic jam with more than a nod to his beloved white-gloved, dry-iced and jheri-curled 80s p-funk and synth soul.
Review: Bristol's Joe Newman is on a serious '80s tip and, luckily for him, so are Tru Thoughts who have signed him up for an album. While we wait for said long player, here we have a teaser treat in the form of a three track EP. "101 Reasons" is a killer update to that whole mid 80s British 'S(ynth) & B' sound (think Loose Ends, The Limit or early Princess), as is "So Nice (It's Got To Be)", whilst Lady T toughens up that classic lazy p-funk sound. Time to reinvest in some grey leather slip-ons and some Soul Glow!
