Too Slow To Disco Edits 07: Yacht Disco
HOLDTight - "Be My Love 2 Nite" - (5:33) 100 BPM Hot
Delfonic - "Let's Go Disco" - (4:56) 99 BPM
Jack Tennis - "Jorge's Pipa" - (6:32) 107 BPM
Those Guys From Athens - "4 Your Love" - (4:34) 86 BPM
Review: If warming, glassy-eyed midtempo disco niceness is your thing, we'd heartily recommend this languid, sun-drenched edits offering from the Too Slow To Disco camp. It's packed to the rafters with toasty, afternoon-ready fare that's arguably best listened to while decked out in boat shoes, pastel-coloured shorts and a stripy t-shirt. HOLDTight steps up first with the head-nodding, saucer-eyed shuffle of future yacht disco classic 'Be My Love 2Nite', before Delfonic offers up a fine rearrangement of an obscure, breathy and seductive disco gem full of prominent Moog synth sounds, jaunty pianos and whispered vocals. 'Jorge's Pipa' by Jack Tennis is a fine, floor-friendly tweak of a disco-era Brazilian gem, while Those Guys From Athens' '4 Your Love' is a seductive disco slow jam straight from the top shelf.

Review: Since launching in 2018, Midnight Riot's gospel-fired "Take It To Church" compilation series has proved hugely popular, hence this third volume of re-edits, remixes and sample-heavy original productions. As usual, there's much to set the pulse racing from start to finish, with highlights including the jazz-funk fired soulful house bump of Opolopo's remix of "Follow Me" by Sense of Sound Singers, the gospel disco/disco-house fusion of Sarah Dash's "Something Inside (DJ Spen & Reelsoul Remix)", the rubbery goodness of Carlton Low's 1980s sounding "Peace, Love, Happiness", the gospel-boogie brilliance of Jack Tennis's filter-heavy "Won't You" and the gospel scalpel science that is Divine Situation's superb "Goin' On" re-edit.

Holding On (Pete Le Freq Refreq) - (7:25) 122 BPM Hot
Holding On (dub mix) - (5:52) 122 BPM
Holding On (radio edit) - (3:34) 122 BPM
Review: This latest offering from Yam Who's prolific Midnight Riot stable and Berlin producer Jack Tennis comes with four mixes to choose from. In its Original form, 'Holding On' sits right on the disco/house cusp and sports both a soulful male vocal and some fine squelching acid. Pete Le Freq's remix brings the fat bassline and some excellent jazz-funk guitar picking to the fore, while fairly self-explanatory Dub and Radio Edit rubs complete the package. Reminiscent, albeit only in the vaguest way possible, of Peyton's 'Higher Place' from yesteryear, don't be surprised if 'Holding On' achieves Ibiza anthem status this summer.

Review: Midnight Riot's first celebration of gospel-fired disco and boogie, "Take It To Church", was rather special, so hopes are naturally high for this follow-up. Happily, we can confirm that Yam Who and company have once again nailed the brief. As with its predecessor, the 23-track set offers up a scintillating, soulful mixture of bumpin' gospel house (see Redsoul's superb "Born Again" and DJ Spen's bass-heavy tweak of Boorman's "God's Got It"), righteous disco-house (the Showfa, Alan Dixon, the piano-heavy stomp of Yam Who's "Tomorrow"), synth-laden gospel boogie (Dr Packer, Yam Who's tidy revision of Andre Esput's "Call Me"), breezy sing-alongs (Lux Experience) and plenty of dusty disco, electrofunk soul rearrangements (Divine Situation, Sweet Jubilees, Phil Jaimes). In other words, it's another essential collection.

Review: The team behind Thunder Jam is dreaming of a "Fantasy Fling". Given that the compilation is an expansive, 21-track affair (sorry), it would be safe to say that they're thinking of a steamy, all-action romance rather than a disappointing one-night stand. Musically, the cuts on offer tend towards the warm and loved-up, with Adata's dreamy deep house opener "Marlena Soul" and the glassy-eyed Balearic disco heat of Aure Zwins' "Long Way" setting the tone. Highlights include the loopy, filter-heavy bounce of Celestino's Lionel Richie-sampling "Rhythm", the twinkling, picturesque nu-disco cheeriness of Double F.O.G's "Bang Bao Boulevard", the synth-heavy boogie revivalism of "Fangkok" by Ivan Fabra and the low-slung dub disco-goes-jazz flex of Noil Rago's "J.Club".

Review: While gospel has always been a strong influence in the worlds of house and disco, the volume of spiritually charged dancefloor tracks has rocketed in recent times. Hence this fine compilation from Midnight Riot and "gospel supremo" the Showfa, which gathers together new, recent and overlooked gospel-fired dancefloor jams. We're particularly enjoying Yam Who and Alan Dixon's brilliant new version of the Soup Dragons' "I'm Free" - think classic, Balearic-era baggy house with more prominence given to the London Gospel Choir's vocals and Dixon's wild organ lines - Le Visiteur's low-slung re-edit of an old gospel-disco gem ("Let The Sunshine") and the rubbery boogie-gospel-goes-filter-house excitement of Benjamin Ferreira's "What U Will". That said, there's barely a duffer to be found amongst the 19 tracks on show, with the emphasis rightly on celebratory positivity throughout.

Review: Oh boy, it's a new Jack Tennis stormer, and just in time for the disco-crimbo dances, too! Back on Midnight Riot, the zesty disco artiste slams down some chunky kick drums and funk-tastic basslines on "Everybody", the sort of nugget to make just about anyone move! "Somebody" is similarly seductive, dropping some dubby bass over soulful vocals, while "Dragging Around" feels like the instrumental cut - the DJ's ultimate weapon to get those hips moving! Yes, big Jack!

Review: Despite us being in the depths of summer, the weather is rubbish. Hooray then, for a sunny new Midnight Riot release. Here Jack Tennis, cough, serves up a re-work of a particularly sunny Italo disco jam, "Money". He aces it too with shimmering 80s tropical synth melodies, claps galore and the genre's always endearing slightly dodgy vocals. Elsewhere the vibes are more 'authentic' with "La Funk" being a monster of thumping, rubber-bass boogie and sexy female vocals, and "Easin" being a slo-mo bloc rocker from back in the day.
