Review: Following on from the first edition last year, Shanti Celeste and Gramrcy's label drops another killer compilation. Airbnd and Buen Clima both drop high-octane, percussive techno, while on "Parallel Sync", Gramrcy slows the tempo down for a murky, layered groove. An ominous sub-bass ripples its way through Happa's dubbed out "Not Right Now", while ISAbella's "Ces Dream" is a slower, introspective piece and Knopha's "Grove Emulator" revolves around a complex rhythm and layered organic drums. Even the fast-paced tracks on Peach Pals are imbued with a subtlety one would not normally find on club techno, with the offbeat groove and punchy drums of Peach's "Moonlight" impressing.

An Understanding
An Understanding - (5:48) 129 BPM Hot
Hit Send - (5:34) 132 BPM
Braids - (5:10) 133 BPM
Review: Jackson Ryland has a few releases to his credit, and now he brings his production skills to Valence for his debut on Ambivalent's label. The title track resounds to lithe break beats and deep chords, which unfold at a leisurely pace. On "Hit Send", Ryland ups the pace, and weaves layered dub chords over a sparse, stepping rhythm. The end result is a mesmerising but somewhat moody techno track. "Braids" sees Ryland continue in this vein; journeying deeper into the realms of dubbed out techno, it's a cavernous affair that puts this emerging US producer in the same category as Mike Parker and Donato Dozzy.

Review: Washington DC-based label Future Times operate on electronic music's more leftfield fringes - previous compilations have, for instance, featured early appearances by the likes of Hunee and Shanti Celeste - and here, for their landmark 50th release, they serve up a 23-track compilation that will appeal to the musically adventurous and sonically broad-minded. For deep house lovers, Martyn & Dolo Percussion's dubby 'Misfit City Rolling', Baronhawk's jazzy 'Phickle Pickle' and the (very) off-kilter disco of Garies' 'Don Bongo' would be good places to start; the space-age footwork/electro of Greg Beato's 'Peste' is interesting too, even if some of more out-there cuts may prove a tad too experimental for some...

Crystal City EP

Crystal City (Steve Murphy version) - (6:13) 126 BPM
JP's (original mix) - (6:22) 126 BPM
Up The Shelf (original mix) - (6:45) 120 BPM
Review: Having originally made his name with the (now dormant) Peanut Butter & Jams blog, Washington-based Jackson Ryland has turned his hand to music production. This debut release for Massimo Previti's popular DaBit label shows much promise. Lead cut "Crystal City" is particularly potent, with glassy-eyed chords and gently throbbing melodies tumbling over sweaty, carnival style percussion. The thumping, cut-up house of "JP's" is also impressive (check the heavy sub bass that enters during the breakdown for proof), while "Up The Shelf" expertly fuses new age electronics with the best of British bass music. Chiwax man Steve Murphy remixes "Crystal City", delivering a tight-but-swinging roller that makes great use of deep chords and colourful piano stabs.

Review: Ah the humble double pack, isn't there something so very satisfying about this format? Sccucci Manucci evidently thinks so as The Nine Bows EP is the label's second release in succession to embrace the double pack. It's another high profile cast that contribute to the eight tracks here, with Montel, Mikki Funk, Jackson Ryland and Aashton all featuring. It's the latter, Brighton-based producer who opens proceedings with "I Can't Shake It", a summer house anthem in the making that showcases his love of a classic RnB vocal. Maverick follows with "Wait For U" which is not only his Sccucci debut but also the Parisian's first production committed to wax - hard to believe! The mood swings through various shades of house from here with "Lemme Hold U" from Montel a mid point highlight thanks to a killer vocal hook.
