Review: It's the age-old argument that's kept croaky old junglists up past their bedtime for years: does VIP stand for 'this mix is strictly for very important people' or does it stand for 'variation in production'? In truth, it can mean either, depending on who made the VIP and who they intended it for. But now at least we know Eatbrain's stance on the matter as they ask some of their biggest VIP producers to go back over a seminal label release of theirs and give it a good overhaul, update and go-faster stripes for 2020. The results speak for themselves; the added grit and funk on L 33's 'Mafia', Jade's emotional dynamics on 'TV Says' and the complete subversion of 'Need' by Zombie Cats and Abis are just three examples of how very important these variations are. Review: Eatbrain return with more flesh-gobbling bruisers in the form of this massive V/A album Divergence II. Following where the inaugural collection left us back in March 2018, once again it's an epic rollcall of Eatbrain artists and friends with no boundaries in terms of subgenre or expectation. Highlights include the slippery kicks and technoid funk of Zombie Cats "Lost", the ravey-style pitched up vocals and A.M.C style energy of the drop on Catastrophe's "Pretender" the insane VIP level-p of Tobax's "Burning" and Burr Oak's schizoid riot "Orbit".... But these are just the tip of the brain-eating iceberg. Jade's label remains bang on-point as ever.

Review: Eatbrain is the Hungarian Neurofunk institution that just keeps on giving, the Central European bass place which prioritises naughty music over everything else. Well, their 2018 album is here from a selection of the artists in their orbit and its everything you'd expect from Jade and the crew. The first cut - 'Mafia' by L 33 - has been out for a little while but has rightfully been re-visited here, its Jump-Up-Neurofunk fusion landing exceptionally well with serious dancefloor implications. There are too many sick tracks on this release to cover them all here, but KOLT's 'Harpy' and 'Pararampam' from Agressor Bunx are two more absolutely ridiculous bits of production. Well worth a look.

Review: Fokuz Recordings consistently release some of the best compilation albums around. Their pool of artists is so diverse and so top quality that an assortment of their work is always going to be special, especially when they bring in outside talent like Break and Zero T. Collaborations 2 is what is says on the tin: remixes and other collaborative projects and blimey, it's good stuff. Joakuim's '8am Roller' is the perfect example, a deft piece of piano-based smoothness that rolls out to your heart's content with sultry results, an instant classic of liquid-sized proportions. The Break remix is a welcome addition, as is the steppy yet soulful Zero T remix of Ben Carlos. Another very, very good selection of cuts from the always sublime Fokuz crew.

Review: The machine has awoken! Eatbrain bossguy Jade returns with four more woke wallopers. The title track says it all; stripped back and slippery, it's a meaner, more minimal rampage from the untouchable neuro king that's followed by an absolute riot of a jam in the form of "Highlander". Co-created with fellow bass terroriser State Of Mind, it's a savage shock to the sense with its layers of menacing psy-textures. Elsewhere the experience is complemented by the warped synth and dense pressure of "Not Safe" before we're eaten alive by "Man Eating Lizard Dragon". Spitting fire at a devilish 150 BPM, this is a whole new side to the machine we've not witnessed before.

Review: Newsflash! Eatbrain bossman Jade isn't actually a human. But then we kinda suspected this already. The level of his obscene production, the dark aesthetic of his label, the absolute skin-scorching fire of the bassline right here. Yeah, we knew Jade was some type of mechanical automaton but we just didn't want to admit it to ourselves. Absolutely machine soul grit from a truly unique man/machine; let's see what this one-tracker leads to...

Review: It could be argued that Jade was one of the unheralded underground heroes of 2015. The Canadian DJ/producer released a number of notable tracks, including appearances on Dilate Records and No. 19 Music. Here she returns to the latter with another trio of woozy, shuffling, tech-tinged, late night house grooves. There's a surprisingly fluid feel about the pitched-down vocal samples, smooth bass and hypnotic, one-note riff of "Process S", while "Process C" is notably darker and a little more intense (even if it does retain a similarly powdery wooziness). Best of all, though, is "Deep Thoughts", a crackling, shuffling chunk of deep tech-house that benefits greatly from additional percussive hits and druggy melodies.

Review: Dutch online record store Triple Vision have put their encyclopedic knowledge of drum and bass and dubstep down in compilation format, and man does it sound fresh! Showcasing some of the hottest talents from the scene, this little library of perfect tunes from 2012 sounds as hot as they did back on their release dates. Featuring the likes of Technicolour & Komatic (now called Technimatic, of course), European atmos-bassers Gerwin & Nuage, Intelligent Manners, Disphonia, Mortem and Sabre, as well as some wildcards and underdogs from artists with their own rabidly fanatical follwings, this is a comp worth savouring and perfect for filling those gaps in your collection with tunes that perhaps passed you by along the way.
