Review: Not An Animal was born from the party debris left uncleaned from London's infamous Bad Passion parties, as ran by Chris Stoker and Andy Bainbridge. Following up great releases by the likes of Ess O Ess, Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan and Ian Blevins, it's now over to James Hadfield aka Lizards, a Newcastle based producer who gives us "Buried Answers". It's an evocative serving of deep house, featuring equal doses of drama and suspense that will appeal to fans of the Kompakt sound. Equally moody and atmospheric is second cut "Literate" which continues on with the Cologne influences (think Barnt) with its gloomy bassline, hissing rhythm patterns and neon-lit synths all working in perfect unison. The remix up next by Interzona 13 main man Tiago (Portugal) is a bit tougher and more straight ahead for added dancefloor dynamics.
Review: The latest missive on Mexico-based Geordie Geoff 'Man Power' Kirkwood's MeMeMe label comes from two previously unheralded talents, James Hadfield and Danny Lynton. "Soak" is a warm and toasty treat, which layers cut-up African vocals and woozy chords over a shuffling, loose-but-locked in disco-tech groove. For those looking for potential "moments", the track boasts a wonderfully wide-eyed, Balearic-minded breakdown. It comes accompanied by a trio of impressive remixes. Kirkwood's own Man Power remix is a trippy, Afro-acid treat, while Axel Boman turns the track in a sparking chunk of Balearic/two-step garage fusion. The wonky, metallic and deliciously bass-heavy Bird of Paradise remix completes a fine package.
