Review: Pulling up on ReleaseLDN following a career kicked started by Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound, James Welsh presents the Spectral Bucaneer EP. Keeping it looped, hi NRG and filtered in the title track, disco fever is in the house. With something a little more Chicago influenced, grimy, minimal and hi-tek there's "B&H" - while shots sent into electro-disco hyperspace come from "Yentob's Amulet".

Review: A round of applause for Dave Harvey's Futureboogie label, which is closing its doors after a decade in which it's releases got stronger and more varied year on year. This superb compilation acts as the imprint's final testament, offering no less than 20 previously unheard nuggets from the Bristol-based imprint's nearest and dearest. Given the wealth of high-grade material on show, singling out highlights is tough, but our current favourites include the echoing,'80s alternative pop-meets-proto house dubbiness of Tech Support's 'Writers Block', the alien synths, glassy-eyed stabs and bustling electro drums of Warehouse Preservation Society's 'Ron's House', the kaleidoscopic house psychedelia of Manami's 'Nacros. Is', the bleeping, drug-fuelled oddness of Chez De Milo's 'Need Someone' and the breakbeat-acid insanity of Hard Ton's 'Don't Believe The Hype'.

Review: If a week is a long time in politics, then a decade is the equivalent of a lifetime in dance music terms. It's for this reason that so many labels are keen to mark their tenth birthday with a special release, just as Wolf Music - one of the UK's most reliable deep house imprints of recent times - has done here. Instead of opting for all new material, the imprint has decided to gather together some of their favourite "Wolf slammers" - cuts that have always done the business on the dancefloor. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the loopy R&B/disco/deep house fusion of Fantastic Man's "Look This Way" and the fabulously analogue Chicago retro-futurism of KRL's "Nothing You Can Teach Me", to the sample-heavy, riff-happy bounce of Red Rack'em's "Do Or Die" and the bass-heavy stomp of K98's warehouse-ready revision of Thrilogy's "Heaven".

Review: Futureboogie is the label arm of the UK booking agency and welcomes the multi-talented James Welsh to the roster. While he's just as adept at making punk and playing bluegrass, Welsh has also a long track record in making electronic music - and can lay claim to remixing Depeche Mode and Britney Spears. All of this experience bubbles to the surface on Hammers: the title track is a deep, rolling affair, populated by spiralling acid lines and hushed chord sequences, while on "Denergy", he opts for a more stripped back affair, as a menacing bass underpins complex, 303-laced rhythms. Rounding off the release is a sweeping, rolling take on the title track by Bristol artist Hodge.

Review: Hypercolour sub label Losing Suki has been quietly doing its thing while its big brother deals in the more high profile cases within the realms of deep and tech house. However there have been some underground smashes within the sixteen releases thus far, including Last Magpie's "Roots" which fittingly kicks off this retrospective compilation of the strongest slammers on the label to date. Fusing low end pressure and polished modern house dynamics at one turn, and then reaching for delicate deep soul tones at the next, the Suki sound is a diverse one but it all sits comfortably together on this compilation. Huxley brings the choppy garage firepower, while Robert Cashin heads into tripped out minimal territory, and the good wagon Losing Suki keeps on rolling.

Review: Arriving at a fifteenth release in little more than three years is no mean feat, and the Wolf Music crew have retained a standard of quality throughout that a few other labels could learn from. Once again switching the emphasis from artist release to a quartet of contributors, WOLF 15 opens with a killer Ron Basejam refix of recent Wolf anthem "Nowt" by James Welsh. Originally a louche slice of beatdown, "Nowt" stays at an even tempo in the hands of the Crazy P artist though there are all new levels of seductive funk added. Complementing this are three label debuts of varying style but equal quality, with Squarehead & Mella Dee (one half of Mista Men no less) opting for a brazen concoction of ruffed up garage rhythms and deep house emotions on "Get Together". Next up, breakout house duo Waze & Odyssey add Wolf to their growing CV with the effervescent cut up house rowdiness of "Feel My Voices" whilst South African producer Terrence Pearce might just steal our affections with the skippy, smudged delights of "Magic".

Review: If you've ever been to Keighley in West Yorkshire, you'll know that it's hardly a hotbed of quality underground house music. Really, it has little going for it, besides a rugby ground named after a big cat ("Cougar Park") and a very large petrol station. Still, James Welsh has somehow managed to ignore his surroundings and produce a cracking EP of heartfelt deep house that's oozing with bittersweet beauty. All four tracks impress, delivering a mix of shuffling grooves, melancholic chords, woozy vocal samples and quietly soulful melodies. If we had to pick, we'd direct you towards "Air Valley" or the bumpin' "Only", but to be honest all for tracks are excellent. Highly recommended.

Review: Having previously impressed with 2012 releases on Wolf Music and Losing Suki, James Welsh continues his ascent towards deep house superstardom with a typically fluid and atmospheric EP for Futureboogie. "Craven" sets the tone, lacing a touchy-feely, tactile house groove with tough 808 cowbells and an intoxicating vocal sample. Regular collaborator Terri Walker makes an appearance on the shuffling, cymbal-heavy old skool garage jam "King Edward Street", while "Bill Murray Came To My House Party" largely lives up to its riotous title. "Horse Fight", with its minor key chords and sprightly synth bass, also hits the spot.
