Review: The much-lauded Jamie XX rework of Gil Scott-Heron's 2010 album I'm New Here finally arrives, and it's pretty darn good. In truth there's little quite as gorgeously ambitious as the strangely anthemic teaser single "NY Is Killing Me" (included here), but that doesn't stop it being an excellent listen. Not so much a set of remixes as a total reproduction, We're New Here places the veteran beat poet's distinctive vocals at the heart of a heady, other-worldly soup of eclectic beats (think dubstep, hip-hop and wonky house), booming basslines, sparkling house riffs, blissful melodies and paranoid late night atmospherics. A near perfect 33 minutes, all told.

Review: It's been a long time since Jamie XX offered up any solo material, so this new release for Young Turks comes loaded with a certain amount of expectation. His trademark knack for atmospheric melodies and catchy arrangements is intact, with "Girl" stepping out on a slow house template anchored by live bass while snatches of strained vocal meld ring out to form the basis for the track. "Sleep Sound" is equally winsome, if a little more energetic as it moves through filtered breakdowns and skittish diversions as though Theo Parrish were on a rotary mixer in front of the final master.

Review: In Colour is of course the long awaited debut solo album from The xx's in-house knob twiddler Jamie 'xx' Smith, arriving through regular home Young Turks backed with a whole host of guest appearances. The more obsessive Jamie xx fans out there (of which we wager there are many) will no doubt already have burned out their laptops and retinas basking in the all too colourful pre-release streams of In Colour, but it's always nice to grip an album in your hands. The eleven tracks on In Colours come across like a low key ode to the rave from Jamie and pals, with Four Tet, Romy & Oli xx, Young Thug and Popcaan featuring, and yes there is also plenty of steel pan. "Hold Tight", which sounds like Jamie's attempt at forest techno, is a definite highlight!

Review: As is now customary, Young Turks round off another productive year by bundling together tracks from some of their key releases. There's naturally much to admire, from the sparse and atmospheric outsider electronica of FKA Twigs' anthem-like "Two Weeks", and leftfield 4/4 dark-funk of SBTRKT's "New Dorp, New York" (featuring the distinctive vocals of Ezra Koening), to the delicate downtempo textures and dub-soaked rhythms of Jamie XX. Throw in a slice of immersive, left-of-centre bass music (Quirke's "Break A Mirrored Leg") and a dash of James Blake style fragility from Sampha ("Too Much"), and you've got a formidable package.
