Review: Most DJs tend to see the DJ Kicks series as an excuse to not only show off their DJ skills, but also the eclectic nature of their music collections. That's the approach Jayda G has taken on her fine instalment, delivering a breathlessly brilliant mix and a selection of unmixed tracks that genuinely has something for every occasion. After beginning with the deep disco of Light of the World, Aged in Harmony and Glass Beams, the Ninja Tune artist offers up a mixture of 21st century Afro-soul (Kokoroko), dubbed-out Brit-funk (Atmosfear), synth-laden '80s soul (Don Blackman), sample-rich 21st century house (Gerry Read), chunky dancefloor deepness (Naomi Darkness, DJ Boring), Motor City-inspired futurism (LNS, Fit Siegel), sub-heavy techno (Haai) and dusty future R&B beats (DJ Koze).

Review: Jayda G goes from strength to strength. Not content with blowing us all away with her 2019 debut album "Significant Changes", she's now stepped things up another notch on her first fresh EP of 2020. Particularly potent is bright and breezy title track "Both Of Us", a gorgeously loose-limbed, bass-heavy house number smothered in retro-futurist piano riffs, dazzling keys-solos and the Australian's own heady vocals. If anything, the accompanying "Sunset Bliss Mix" - a celebratory, tooled-up take that drags the cut towards "summer anthem" status - is arguably even better. The EP also contains two versions of "Are You Down": the percussive, spacey and sub-heavy deep house flex of the original mix, and a smoother, dreamier "Remix" that boasts some ace electric piano solos.

Review: Ninja Tune has commissioned remixes of tracks from Jayda G's debut album - and it's a truly diverse selection. First up is Honey Dijon's slamming, acid-heavy takes on "Stanley's Get Down (No Parking On The DF)"'. Over the course of two interpretations, she intersperses 303 licks and white noise percussion over a slamming groove. In stark contrast is Dam Funk's beautiful, gospel-tinged take on "Move To The Front (Disco Mix)" and Fett Burger's version of "Missy Knows What's Up", where the Freakout Cult boss delivers an otherworldly house version that touches on electro influences and chopped up vocals. It's a fitting end to this across the board remix selection.

Review: Canadian DJ/producer Jayda G presents her debut album on UK institution Ninja Tune. The Berlin-based artist made the album in 2018, the same year she completed a Masters in Resource and Environmental Management. Of the album's theme, Jayda explained that she is trying to bring her two worlds together, bridging the communication gap and engaging people - as she feels it's her social responsibility to use a platform like this in a positive way. And while not entirely sure if people in the electronic music community want to talk about the environment, she certainly hopes that this will elicit some kind of conversation around the topic. The Significant Changes LP features 'a blend of vintage drum machine funk, drawing heavily on Chicago's house blueprint' and featuring vocals by a good friend and frequent collaborator: Calgary-based songstress Alexa Dash. She last joined Jayda on the terrific "Diva Bitch" on Freakout Cult last year - the label she runs with DJ Fett Burger.
