Review: Arriving just in time for the summer season, Hot Digits delivers a compilation that is tailor made to soundtrack lazy, hazy days. Even Funkier's "Feel So Good Inside" is an irresistible, funk-fuelled disco groove, while Ben Jamin's "Handle" inhabits a similar space. Soaked in wailing guitar and soulful vocals, it's a wonderfully infectious track. Both Andy Buchan and P-Sol raise the tempo with string-filled disco workouts, while Fray Bentos' "Danced To Death" offers a more electronic take on this sound. The compilation does veer towards house on occasion - most impressively with the subtle drum builds and chord progressions on Down Under Disco's "On My Mind". In the main though, Year Nine impresses most when it draws on disco and funk influences, such as the raucous party jam that is label owner Fingerman's collaboration with Chewy Rubs, "Block Party Bad Boy".

Review: For their 100th release, Hot Digits bring us a truly outstanding collection that gathers together the best of the label's last 50 outings. Just one look at the talent roster involved should be enough to get any contemporary disco lover's tastebuds tingling, replete as it is with names like Fingerman, Dexter Jones, Fray Bentos, C Da Afro, Dave Mathmos and Jet Boot Jack, and suffice to say the music they provide doesn't disappoint one iota! With 30 full-length cuts plus two hour-long DJ mixes there's no room here to go into every track, but whether you like it deep n' chuggy, funky n' furious or boogie-tastic n' soul-tinged, you'll find plenty of fresh ammo for your disco machine gun here.

Review: Number eight in the series, and do you really need us to tell you that it's an object lesson in how to do 21st Century disco properly? Tracks range from the Kraftwerk/Yello-isms of From Beyond's 'Hypersleep' to Kooky & Damoon's genre-defying 'Confidence Of Ignorance (Dub'), which tops a sumptuous, jazzy funk/soul cut with a liberal dose of acid squelch, and from Jahn Solo's Ecstasy, Passion & Pain-biting piano houser 'Touch Me' to the sleazy early 80s Berlin throb of Brian SNR's 'Hot Shot', with a side-order of syprupy soul courtesy of The Secret Soul Society. Big names may be in short supply here but adventurous, imaginative grooves are not!

Review: Going by the volume of tracks on show, it would be fair to say that Masterworks Music's "Bag of Tricks" is not a little handbag, but more like a Mary Poppins style bottomless carpetbag. The label's latest rummage through its seemingly endless contents has been a successful one, with the 20 showcased cuts including a wealth of fine fusions of disco, house, boogie, electro and 80s soul. It's uniformly dancefloor-focused, with highlights including the Afro-house/disco-tech fusion of JB Dizzy, the driving, spaced-out disco-house grooves of Mike Woods, the loose-limbed, off-the-wall edits of Chewy Rubs, the sweet disco-soul bounce of RocknRolla Soundsystem, the delay-laden synth sing-along styles of Rayko and the hot-to-trot brilliance of Downunder Disco.

Review: In normal circumstances, we'd be a little worried if someone served us "Golden Cream". We know we're safe in the hands of DJ/producer James Rodriguez though, with the compilation representing the cream of the crop from the Spanish producer's Golden Soul Records imprint. There's naturally much to enjoy across the 17-track collection, with Rodriguez opting for cuts that flit between kaliedoscopic nu-disco headiness (Italo Brutalo's remix of his and Disco Doubles' "White Sands"), Clavinet-happy acid disco chunkiness ("Crazy Bass" by The Players and DJ Steevo), elastic electrofunk with a Middle Eastern flavour (Dim Zach's remix of JB Dizzy's "Transistor"), driving late night intensity (Los Fugazi's "Afterglow (Flxxx Remix)", peak-time piano fun (Get Down Edits glistening remix of Slync's loved-up "Neon") and rushing disco goodness ("Tradlord" by Call Me Classic).

Review: Every 12 months, Fingerman's prolific Hot Digits imprint serves up an epic compilation entirely made up of exclusive, previously unheard re-edits, reworks and original productions. They're invariably excellent and this year's edition - the fifth in total - is even more epic than usual. There's naturally plenty to set the pulse racing amongst the dancefloor focused 32-track selection, from the throbbing Italo-disco style electronic sleaziness of Peza's "I Gotta Little Love" and the bouncy, acid-flecked cheeriness of Limpdisco's "Rush Hour", to the angular nu-disco heaviness of Andy Kidd's "The Dope Cube", the sparkling 80s boogie goodness of LUP INO's "Don't Stop Fooling" and and disco-funk-goes-house pump of Fingerman's "Family Ties". Keep an eye out too for rock solid rubs by Dr Packer, Chuggin Edits, Rayko and Andy Buchan.

Lovin' Me
Lovin' Me (Get Down Edits Deep Lovin' remix) - (5:54) 120 BPM
Review: Some three years after releasing his debut EP on Disco Fruit, David "JB Dizzy" Backes is back in action, this time on Fingerman's Hot Digits Music imprint. He starts a wonderfully warm and groovy EP with the sweeping synth-strings, darting P-funk synth flashes, rich electric piano stabs and mid-tempo disco grooves of "Rendezvous", before upping the tempo on the filter boasting disco/deep house fusion of hazy title track "Lovin' Me". For those seeking something with a little more head-nodding chug, the breezy, sun-kissed "Slow Cooking" should tick a lot boxes thanks to an alluring combination of dubbed-out vocal snippets and toasty disco instrumentation. Fingerman delivers a slightly more peak-time-ready revision of "Rendezvous", while Get Down Edits do a similar job on their loopy, tooled-up disco-house take on "Lovin' Me".

Kiu D - "Twenty One Eight" - (8:28) 122 BPM
Review: To kick-start a fourth year of disco-fuelled madness, Hot Digits chief Fingerman has put together this sizeable compilation of previously unheard exclusives. As you'd expect, there's far more killers than fillers to be found amongst the 28-track deep selection or re-edits and original productions. Highlights include the clarinet-laden electrofunk-meets-disco bounce of Frank Virgilio's "It's Your Boogie Baby", the disco-goes-hip-hop flex of Tony Disco's delicious "Rolling Paper", the sparkling nu-disco goodness of "When It Comes To Funk" by Stephen Richards, the driving disco-house bump of Ash Reynolds' "Cold Girl" and the fuzzy electrofunk wobble of Don Dayglow's "Many Things". Throw in fine contributions from Chewy Rubs, Le Visiteur, norse man Jarle Brathen and, of course, Fingerman, and you have a must-buy collection of cuts.

Disco Fruit Selection Vol 4
Various
Tonbe - "Feel The Night" - (6:43) 122 BPM
Review: In the hustle and bustle of the disco edit scene, the Disco Fruit crew are committed to keeping the spirit of classic '70s sounds alive. The modern elements are pushed to the back as JB Dizzy gets raunchy with the guitar licks, horn sections and some divine vocoder action on "Midnight Power". Mike Woods meanwhile knows just how to treat "Do You Like The Way That It Feels?" by Tempest Trio, keeping the soul of the original party burner alive while beefing up the drums just a touch. Across this 10-track collection the quality remains unflappable in its channeling of true disco principles.
