Review: Absolute bastions of one of the UK's most unabashed underground genres that refuses to be reshaped or sell out, Northern Line and 4x4 UKG are synonymous with each other. Here's yet another 16 track memo from the gully institution, each cut underlining just how consistent the label and its nasty Slugs bit on the side have been in 10 years: the rolling 140 thunder and classically trained riff of "Monkey Slugs", the happy slapping skank spanks and gritty 4/4 hammer-heaven of JC's "Porno Slugs", the candyfloss vocal funk and speed garage warbles of Paleface's "Lovely Slugs" the tempo terror of "Kebab"... Review: If this is what arrives in Tresor's inbox, then they are luckier than most labels. With a focus on tough techno, Demo Tracks 2 showcases some fine new talent. Acronym's "Nabu" is a dark rolling affair, its detailed textures creating a hypnotic cavernous sound. JC's "Chenox" is more direct, with rough, distorted drums fused with a slamming, grainy rhythm primed for the peak time. Neither can compare to Zadig's "Panic". The tempo is far higher, the rhythm more stripped back and visceral, and the arrangement filled with the kind of ferocious percussive bursts that would singe your hair if you stood too close to the speakers.
