Review: Since donning the Jem Stone alias a few years back, former Soul of Man member and Finger Lickin' Records co-fouder Jem Panufnik has delighted at showcasing his musical dexterity. Having previously touched on everything from hazy house, Balearica, funk and dusty downtempo beats, "Black Magic" sees him exploring the world of mind-altering nu-disco. Of course, echoes of his breakbeat-driven past are plentiful on the EP opening "Extended Mix", where scratchy hip-hop samples and punchy horn stabs charge in and out of a low-slung disco-funk groove. The accompanying "Dub Mix" is rather tasty, too, with Panufnik wisely giving greater prominence to the restless bassline, funk-fuelled lead line and trippy, head-mangling special effects.

Review: Given that Jem Stone AKA Jem Panufnik was once the driving force behind the Finger Lickin' label, you'd expect this debut full-length to be crammed full of party-starting treats. It is, of course, though Panufnik wisely chooses not to go for the jugular straight away, instead showcasing a string of shuffling, mid-tempo grooves that gleefully join the dots between hazy house, hip-hop, blues, Balearica (the delicious "Sweatpea") and pitched-down funk breaks ("Hotdog Supreme"). When the up-tempo workouts come, they're predictably tasty, with the wild breakbeat house thrust of "Storm in a Teacup" and creepy and dense tech-house throb-job "Fake Ghost" standing out. Best of all, though, is the trippy, string-drenched downtempo soundscape "The Final Curtain".

Review: A lot has changed in the world of music since Freshly Squeezed dropped the first installment of their eponymous label compilation back in 2013. For one, the term electro-swing has become a household name with even the UK Eurovision entry adopting this musical style. Still, this label is where you get the real stuff and here we are treated to another 15 examples. Highlights include the attitude-heavy, dubstep-flecked "Swing Ya Beard" by JFB & Beardyman, Jem Stone's big beat bouncer "Be Bop 2 Hip Hop" and the tough house slammer "Lick The Spoon" by Foxy Cheex & Jem Stone.

Now updated in remix-form, both Funkanomics and Rory Hoy give it a brand new wardrobe... The former goes deep into nu funk mode with a sleazy groove and grizzly bass textures while the latter gets jiggy on a skank-wise big beat format. Party time in both directions, once you've licked this spoon clean you'll be raiding the cutlery draw.

Review: Finger Lickin lothario Stone continues his joyously unpredictable groove assault with this laid-back slab of fun-poking hip-hop. Swaggering beats, jazzy piano flurries and slick rhymes from UK word-players Mouthwash and Gold Seal, it's definitely one for the earlier chapters of the evening. Looking for something a little more 'late night'? Look no further than Featurecast's jack-slapping skank-up. Walloping away at a cool 110BPM with 110 tonnes of bass, it's the consummate complement to the original's cool nature. "Top O' The Town" - drop it and you'll be talk of the town.
