Review: Less than a month after dropping his latest missive for Moodmusic, Joal makes his bow on Urge to Dance. Opener and title track 'Hold It' is particularly potent, with the Berlin-based Portuguese producer wrapping dark, moody synths, buzzing stabs, sleazy acid lines and hushed spoken word vocals around a throbbing dark disco groove. Jepe provides the obligatory remix, opting for a bouncier groove and more hypnotic vibe before unleashing waves of audio madness as it progresses. Elsewhere, 'Wrong Song' joins the dots between EBM, dark disco and locked-in late-night house, while Malitz's accompanying rework re-imagines the track as a TB-303 powered cosmic disco chugger.
Review: British dance music sensation Hot Since 82, he of Knee Deep In Sound fame, presents this specially commissioned DJ mix as part of the Mixmag Presents series, which previously featured industry heavyweights such as Claude VonStroke, Maya Jane Coles and Busy P. Described as 'a super hot house mix' it features Avotre head Sante teaming up with German scene veteran Frank Lorber on the deep and emotive groove of "All About", the return of Berlin's Philip Bader (Highgrade) on the classic US house vibe of "More", while legends Martin Buttrich & Mousse T serve up some proper mood music on the intoxicating "Smack Back" and "Tout Va Bien" by Watergate resident Matthias Meyer gets a dark and dubby techno rework by maverick Bulgarian live act KiNK.
Review: German label Jackoff reboot a series whose last volume dropped way back in 2014. It's an impressively varied set: Matthias Vogt serves up some electro-inspired prog on 'Love Plus One' (nothing to do with Haircut 100), Joal and Jepe flirt with both Detroit techno and Italo-disco, Jakobin pays homage to the hardcore/proto-jungle era with the aptly-titled 'Cold Breaks', DJ Rocca mashes up dub and rave on 'Como Esta', and Freestyle Man takes us into leftfield electro territory on closer 'Phobos Protectorate'. It would be a VERY open-minded DJ or dancefloor that'd love all six in equal measure, but conversely, the stylistic range on offer makes this worth checking for jocks of many persuasions.
