Review: Hurtling towards their one year anniversary in style, Damageman's Sub Heavy Audio dish up their first substantial V/A EP with this epic five track exploration from some of their clear players. All wriggling and writhing around stripped back stinky vibe, each cut hits the spot with clarity and precision. Stand-out moments include the deft vocal sample twists and turns of Rodeo's "Moves", Damageman and Craftmus's springy black magic slap-about "Wicked Spells" and the sweeping, star-gazing rushes of Dec James' "Supernova" but all five cuts here deserve your full attention. Heavy is as heavy does...
Review: With just ten EPs to his credit in as many years, Joe is not the most prolific artist, but he clearly favours quality over quantity. Tail Lift is his fourth release on Hessle Audio - he debuted on the label during its early days back in 2009 - and it's as individualistic as ever. "Tail Lift" sees the UK producer combine a swinging rhythm with jazzy keys and some wild-sounding, out of tune segues. Throw in psychedelic riffs and rave whistles and you've got one of the most unusual dance floor tracks of 2017. "MPH" sees him go even weirder, with wobbly piano lines and lo-fi kazoos unravelling over mid-tempo drums. This will keep his fans content until Joe's next left of centre instalment.
Review: To celebrate four years of releases, Hemlock, the label run by Untold and Jack Dunning presents Chapter One, a collection of label highlights and unreleased exclusives. Moving through the glittery funk-leaning post-dubstep of Fantastic Mr Fox, Mount Kimbie and James Blake, through techno contributions from Sei A, Randomer and Guy Andrews, and bass hybrids from Pangaea and Joe, the selections on offer demonstrate why Hemlock has been ahead of the game since its inception. As well as the individual tracks, a continuous mix is also on offer, joining the dots between their diverse releases with style.
