Poker Flat mines the rich heritage of US house for its latest release. Doc Martin and Joeski were synonymous with the San Fran sound of the late 90s and early 00s and on Vajra, they show that they haven't lost their ability to craft psychedelic, tribal house. The title track feature a brooding, system-levelling bass and vocalist Lillia's seductive tones weaving in and out dubbed out drums and reverb. It's a straightforward but hypnotic approach to house music production. On "Leary's Revenge", which appears to sample counter-culture hero Timothy Leary, waves of dubby textures rise up over a stripped back rhythm track. Steve Bug's label deserves kudos for supporting this highly distinctive take on house music.
