Review: Remarkably, three decades have now passed since Dave Lee AKA Joey Nergo inaugurated his label, Z Records. To mark the occasion, Lee has compiled this suitably epic, 44-track retrospective. There are plenty of big tunes and underground anthems present- see Jakatta's "American Dream", Raven Maize's "The Real Life", The Sunburst Band's "Everyday" and Doug Willis's "Spread Love" - as well as some of the veteran DJ/producer's favourite catalogue cuts and some slept-on gems. Review: Six years on from launching the It's A Summer Groove series, Joey Negro returns with a fifth selection of sunshine-friendly tracks from the Z Records vaults. While much of the label's output - soulful, accessible, funky and heavily influenced by disco, funk and boogie - could be described as "summery", there's something particularly bright and breezy about the 21 tracks gathered together here. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the smooth disco-soul goodness of the Reflex's recent remix of the Sunburst Band's "The Secret Life of Us", and the terrace-friendly piano house of Shur-I-Kan's rework of Zo & Erro & Phonte, to the vibraphone-laden boogie-house goodness of Rainbow Connection and Taka Boom's "Surrender".

Highlights include the quirky Chaka Khan-esque "Ain't No Way" by Opal, the sumptuous luxury vibes of "Stop" by Valerie Allington and the legendary low-slung bass-fest "Barah" by Cleavage. Review: For the past two decades, Frankie Knuckles has specialized in creating the sort of warm, touchy-feely soulful house remixes that recall a more innocent age. Here he's at it again (alongside pal Eric Kupper), re-shaping the Sunburst Band's reveivalist disco-boogie jam "The Secret Life of Us" as a grandiose, string-laden homage to early days of E-fuelled soulful house excess. The Signature Mix makes great use of Diane Charlemagne's excellent vocal, layering it over a classic Knuckles groove and all manner of pads, chords and melodic touches. The Signature Dub, complete with epic intro and singalong chorus repeats, is if anything even better. A pleasing blast from the past, all told.

Review: Given his history as a maker of lusciously melodic, soul-flecked electronic music, Martin 'Atjazz' Iveson is a smart choice to remix the latest chunk of boogie-soul from Dave Lee's Sunburst Band project. Iveson's vocal mix is something of a morning fresh blast-from-the-past - a shuffling, Osunlade-ish fusion of Darian's soulful vocals, twinkling pianos and jazzy house percussion. His Syncopated Dub is even better, all warm synths, Henrik Schwarz-ish builds, twinkling pianos and shuffling rhythms. For those looking for a quick percussive hit, Iveson has also provided an excellent Beat Skit. Not to be outdone, Dave Lee also provides a clutch of remixes. Of these, it's the sweet boogie-soul groovery of the Joey Negro Dub that most impresses.

Review: End of year reflections... For some labels it's just a re-hash of familiarity. For others it's a chance to really celebrate the breadth of releases. This is the label boss Joey Negro's personal closing party. And having spun tunes there for well over 20 years, he knows how to select the very best party tracks. No-nonsense funky house business, then. With a strong nod to the bass influence in today's dancefloor patter, too. Cuts like Z Factor's "Sound In The Air" and Spirit Catcher's "Absolute Drop" both reference the old while sounding band up to date with crisp, vibrant production qualities and dominant bottom end. There's plenty of Joey's own material here. Review: UK disco and house ledge Joey Negro returns - again - this time presenting four reworks of insouciant house jam "Take It To the Top" on his own Z Records imprint. Mule and Freerange alumnus Andreas Saag turns in two revisions, a "dubstrumental" and a straight up remix, with the latter ripe for peak time play. There's also an extended mix from Negro himself which teases out the lush disco arrangement beautifully and an acappella for the more creative DJs out there.
