Review: A journey through waveforms, transmission and light with label boss Andre Kronert on Odd Even Volume One, where he carefully curates an intoxicating mix comprised of some of the label's finest moments. Highlights not limited to: boss man Kronert on the dirty acid jack of "Ain't No Funny Dirty Old Man Music (Jeroen Search Remix) and the tunnelling techno of "Isolation", German veteran Johannes Heil who is fine form as always on the trance-indicing "Gospel Seven" and the barrelling peak time thriller "By Night Part Three" through to label staple Markus Suckut who delivers his typically contorted style of techno on "Your Legs", plus ever impressive Italian duo Boston 168 doing their usual mentalist thing on the acidic "Oblivion" and "Nightcall" respectively.

Review: The twelfth release on Johannes Heil's Exile imprint sees the veteran producer demonstrate his prowess. Of the two pieces, "Track 1" is the more conventional club workout; centred on slamming drums and a wiry rhythm, its support of crashing cymbals and niggling electronic riffs guarantee that it will become a weapon of choice for discerning techno DJs. More impressive still is the second, untitled piece: the drums are punchy and the rhythm jitters hyperactively, but it's the siren riff that builds and builds throughout the arrangement that ensures it is one of the most distinctive peak-time tracks to appear in 2019.

Review: Johannes Heil continues on his mission to bring underground techno to the masses with the eleventh Exile release. "Track 1" is a heads-down affair. Led by firing percussion and throbbing bass pulses, it showcases Heil's ability to deliver lean, linear techno. Meanwhile, he opts for a dif-ferent approach on "Track 2". Featuring the somewhat unusual combi-nation of a robotic vocal and dramatic chord stabs, doubled-up claps provide a fitting backdrop to gel these elements together. Last but not least is "Track 3", where Heil drops a combination of pounding kicks and percussive volleys to create a deep but pounding fusion.

Review: Over the last quarter century, Johannes Heil has been one of Europe's most consistent - and underrated - techno producers. As the latest release on his and Markus Suckut's Exile label demonstrates, the German artist hasn't lost any of his edge. Over four untitled cuts, Heil shows his mastery of the acid box; "A1" is all about the creepy vocal samples and a 303 pushed to the point of exhaustion, while on "A2", Heil replicates a demented bee buzzing its way over powerful kicks and wild snare rolls. "B1" is more restrained - if that word exists in his lexicon - and focuses largely on a murky rhythm, while on the 'B2' cut, he comes back with a huge, building rave track.

Review: For his eleventh(!) studio album, techno veteran Johannes Heil does what he knows best and focuses on the dance floor. Gospel starts the soundscapes of "Gospel One" before giving way to the epic synths and heavy kicks of "Gospel Two", which come across like Slam and early Ron Trent on steroids. "Gospel Three" sees the German producer delve into deeper, dub techno, while on the fourth instalment, he drops a bleep-heavy break beat track. Heil has always been a versatile producer, but no matter what direction he veers into, each track on Gospel has a crisp, precise sound. From the chord-heavy builds of "Gospel Six" to the rolling tribal groove of "Gospel Nine", this approach prevails on Heil's latest album.

Review: Exile is the label that veteran producer Johannes Heil set up with Markus Suckut, and on its eighth installment, there is a distinctly purist feel. "A1" is a firing percussive affair, led by tough, relentless drums and cold bleeps. It sounds like Sleeparchive at his most austere, combined with Millsian funk. "A2" revolves around a hypnotic organ riff that spirals into intensity thanks to a series of doubled up claps. Meanwhile "B1" is a searing, visceral groove, a proper heads-down affair that is supported by tribal beats and insistent hi-hats. "B2" rounds off the release with a storming big room workout, reminiscent of vintage Dave Clarke material.

Review: Johannes Heil is of Berlin's (not to mention techno in general's) most underrated heroes. This workhorse has been responsible for some seminal releases in the last twenty years. The obvious ones being his early releases on Kanzleramt through to Anthony Rother's Datapunk and of course Len Faki's Figure; where some of his most powerful output of late has come courtesy of. Since launching his own Exile imprint with Markus Suckut, Heil has further honed his hard hitting yet mesmerising dancefloor journeys. Starting with the brooding hi-octane transporter that is "EXILE 007 A1", he then brings in the power courtesy of the banging and fucntional DJ tool "EXILE 007 B1" which is exactly the kind of stripped back industrial groove Suckut would play at Berghain. Finally "EXILE 007 B2" goes for something deeper and more hypnotic on this clever Millsian style exercise in trance induction. That is until those mad rave sirens come rushing in!

Review: While Soul of Hex's 2014 debut, Lip Reading, was pretty good (and was accompanied by a tasty Larry Heard remix), it's safe to say that this belated follow-up on Freerange is even better. Deep, jazzy and undulating, much of it sounds like a cross between Moodymann, the smoky fare served up recently on Rhythm Section International, and the disco-tinged, oddball house goodness associated with some Sex Tags Mania output. Highlights are naturally plentiful, from the electric bass-driven deep disco-house grooves of "The Muth", and delay-laden sax samples of deep jazz-house shuffler "The Third Eye", to the warm, compressed, hip-wigglin' goodness of "Sly Batique". Rhythm Section man Henry Wu remixes "The Muth", adding a harder edge, sweatier feel, and some decidedly alien synth lines.

Review: The Black Light is German techno veteran Johannes Heil's first artist album in five years and follows on from a series of untitled collaborative releases with Markus Suckut on the pair's new Exile label. While Light does not reinvent the wheel, it does prove yet again that when it comes to no-nonsense club techno, few producers can match Heil. "Scene Four" is a typical Heil affair, with a filtered chord sequence unravelling over storming beats, while "Scene Five" sees him revisit the early days of German techno with a stomping analogue workout. Despite this no-holds barred approach, the album also contains subtlety on and off the dance floor, audible on the siren blasts and dense claps of "Scene Three" and the serene but slightly menacing ambience of "Scene One".
