Review: Ninja Tune offshoot Counter Records recently described singer-songwriter Jono McCleery - a regular support act for label stalwart Fink during his live tours - as "one of British music's best-kept secrets". If this sublime new album (his first since 2015) is anything to go by, McCleery's talents won't be hidden for much longer. Stripped back and atmospheric, Seeds of Dandelion sees McCleery and his trusty guitar accompanied by little more than an occasional string quartet. Combined with McCleery's superb lyrics and impassioned, quietly soulful vocal delivery, the result is a folksy set packed to the rafters with gently arresting highlights. While his own compositions are rarely less than superb, it's his closing cover version of Sebastien Tellier's downtempo classic "La Ritournelle" - McCleery somehow making a beautiful track even more poignant - that hits home hardest.

Ballade (Djrum remix) - (7:53) 129 BPM Hot
Review: If we didn't know better, naming your ballad song a "Ballade" might appear a bit pretentious. We can see Jono now - sat outside a cafe, dark sunglasses, and legs crossed and smoking a French cigarette: "Non, non, I do not write mere 'ballads'! I am an artiste, and I write 'ballades'!!!". Thankfully though, McCleary is the real deal and this song continues his much-celebrated penchant for haunting and atmospheric lo-fi soul (he still hasn't managed to catch that woodpecker at large in his studio though). Djrum also provides a slightly more breakbeat influenced remix.

Fire In My Hands - (3:07) 75 BPM Hot
Painted Blue - (2:33) 120 BPM
Review: We can't vouch for "A Fire In His Hands", but we're pretty sure this London producer has a woodpecker in his studio (that's a little joke about the percussion there). Seriously though, and McCleery is a very serious artist, this two track EP sees bluesy vocals yearn over sparse but inventive accompaniment: an exquisitely brittle and raw example of lo-fi soul at it's finest.
