Review: Next up from the ever-immersive XL imprint, a fiery display of futuristic garage goodness, as they welcome back the heavyweight production techniques of Joy Orbison for a flamboyant two track display, showing multiple worlds colliding in the best way possible. First up, 'Flight FM' gives us a bumping fusion of grizzly reese-driven bass notation, tied together with skippy garage themes and gnarly melodic ideas, setting the tone perfectly. Following on from this, 'Flex FM', AKA the 'freddit' sees the likes of Lil Yachty, Future & Playboi Carti vocals brought into the mixer, giving us a nice additional touch for the dancefloor singalong crew. Tidy work indeed!

Review: Joy Orbison returns to XL Recordings for the first time since the release of his critically acclaimed, and deliciously difficult to describe, debut album Still Slipping. Whereas that was constructed as a mixtape and showcased his influences and inspirations as much as his signature style (in other words, it wasn't a set of straight-up peak-time bangers), this two-tracker sees the long-serving UK producer refocus on the dancefloor. First up is 'Pinky Ring', an atmospheric and quietly dreamy chunk of post-two-step UK garage rich in gnarly, mutilated bass, cut-up vocal snippets, punchy drums and woozy chords. 'Red Valve7' meanwhile, opens with intergalactic ambient sounds before warping into a far0sighted, dubstep-influenced UK techno number peppered with minor-key electronics, moody chords and warped electronic bass.

Review: It may have taken a while - his massive debut single 'Hyph Mngo' was released 12 years ago - but Joy Orbison has finally got round to recording his debut album. It's a highly personal affair, peppered with speech snippets from various family members (including his mum, dad, sister, cousins and famous uncle Ray Keith). It's a device that works well, providing a unifying thread throughout a woozy, musically eclectic concoction that sees the now veteran UK producer give his distinct spin on ambient, slow house, two-step garage, deep house, post-dubstep beats, dubbed-out soundscapes, British bass music, experimental electronica, cutting edge deep D&B and much more besides. It's perhaps not the all-out assault on the dancefloor some may have expected, but it is a genuinely brilliant and entertaining album.
