Reform EP
Review: Having launched the label with the long-awaited 'Show Me' dBridge collaboration, Jubei steps up once again with his own Carbon imprint with the 002 release - 'Reform'. We kick off with the tubular sub booms of 'Slipstream' where the bassline is tailored for big rigs before 'Component' (with Submotive) comes in with elements of techno to its relentless rhythm and sudden splashes of groaning bass or housey synths. 'Running Scared' closes on a tense breakbeat tip as the percussion runs relentlessly in and out of the bassline shadows. Another excellent release.

Show Me
Review: Jubei, after many years of doing his thing across numerous labels, has stepped out on his own and created Carbon Music. This is the first release and it's of a quality befitting the importance of the occasion, with Jubei bringing in dBridge for the A-side just to be sure. That a-side - 'Show Me' - rests on an hypnotic vocal sample that pulses throughout the whole arrangement, the backdrop to a penetratingly dark bassline that pushes and strains with frightening force. The flip is equally dark, with a stabby low end that ingrains into your soul with its repetitive structure and clarity of sound. We can't wait to hear more.

Cold Heart/Little Dubplate
Played by: Sikka, Kyrist
Review: Snapping at the heels of his recent collabo with Total Science, Metalheadz mandem Jubei makes his Exit debut with these two outstanding pieces. "Cold Heart" is actually pretty warm hearted with his signature synth whirls, hopeful chords and those rolling, almost Calibreish breaks. Meanwhile "Just A Little Dubplate" does everything you'd want it to from its title; it bumps, rolls and comes with a heads down guarantee. Heavily rotated at last year's Sun & Bass, we've been waiting for this for a while now.

Reality Check/Redemption
Review: Total Science and Jubei releasing a joint single on Metalheadz is about as legendary a combination as you can get, isn't it? The three artists have shaken their heads together and come out with a classic old-school release that relies on a thick sense of rough vibrancy in all areas of production. You can feel the history on this one. 'Reality Check' is the roller of the single and boy, you really can't beat the weight of the drum sounds on this one and the percussion is the main attraction here: rough and ready to roll. 'Redemption' is steppier and more breaksy but no less fluid, with a groaning pulse of a back end and a rave-influenced synth line which contrasts beautifully with the lows. The boys are back.

The Arcane EP
Played by: Hex
Review: Fresh from tearing Sun And Bass a new one, the mighty Jubei and his fast rising mate Tyrone step up to Headz with their first collaborative EP and it's business from the moment that evangelistic intro opens on "Stabs". Elsewhere we're whisked into a swirl of synths and textures on the rising, sweeping dreamer "Avalon", we're pummelled into submission by killer droned out horns on apocalyptic damager "The Saboteur" before being crushed by incredible breakbeat craftmanship on the Blue Note primed "Hoppers Theme". Just plain insane; yet another crucial EP from Headz this year.

Lubbly Jubbly/Fanny's Ya Aunt
Review: Another touching update on Marcus's indelible legacy; Jubei steps up to Metalheadz with two immense collaborations. "Lubbly Jubbly" is a true blueprint jam; eerie, weighty, weird and spacey, it builds with a percussive momentum that's so tangible you can feel Marcus fingerprints on it. "Fanny's Ya Aunt" flips for more of a dreamier slice of both men's psyches and styles. Every bit as deep and classy as you already know it is. Marcus Intalex Rest In Peace.

To Have & Have Not
Played by: Mauoq, Parker, Calculon
Review: Almost three years old and To Have & Have Not continues to spawn fresh creativity. Blocks & Escher fire up the remix engine with a thunderstruck live drum shake-up of Jubei & Goldie's "The Prayer". Skeppy follows with a slightly swung twist to "Incognito" that thrusts Jerome's vocals further under the icy spotlight while Ulterior Motive add a little funk with cymbal splashes and reverbed FX on the synths. Finally Om Unit brings us back to where it all started as the foundation angst of "The Prayer" is simmered down into a cosmic halftime stew with a vibrant amen aftertaste. To not have "To Have & Have Not" would be criminal.

True Form
Review: Jubei writing about his true form gets everyone nervous, because if the stuff he was pushing out before wasn't raw enough, how much darker can it get? True to form, this extended EP is a gold ticket to all that's good in the world of drum and bass here in the middle of the 2010s. From start to finish those bottomless basslines roll out into huge caverns of sound, where empty space plays with constricted percussion and tight, original song writing and stunning musical ideas from like-minded producers. Jubei is killing it and if you're in his way, prepare to be converted.

These Things VIP/Dillirious VIP
Played by: Sektor, Lenzman, Zen Dub
Review: If you thought you were in for a treat with a brand new Jubei tune to rinse, just how much better did your day get when you found out dBridge was in on the action? A deep, dark, filthy rumbler of a track, "These Things" VIP was made especially for underground dancefloors in the dead of winter. Artificial Intelligence follows up with "Dillirious" VIP which looks to be one of the pair's most aggressively roof-raising releases in recent memory. Packed with punchy snares and a big, menacing bassline that just keeps on uncoiling from a tight mid-range of Tesla coil effects, it's the best conclusion to two perfect VIPs hammered out of two already damn good tracks.

To Have & Have Not (Bonus Track Version)
Review: As one of drum and bass' perennial figures, Jubei has spent the past few years putting out solid releases via respectable outlets like Critical's Modulations and Ingredients, but it's on Metalheadz where he's rooted most of his well-known back catalogue. Using this release to unleash his experimental side, Jubei picks his way through D&B and dubstep tempos as he collaborates with the likes of Consequence, Marcus Intalex, and even the big-in-the-game names of Goldie and dBridge. Also featured are DRS, SP:MC and Flowdan, lending their famous vocal talents to the LP which also hosts bonus track "State Of The Art (dub version)", a cold-hearted stepper from the depths of Jubei's twisted imagination. You'd be out of your mind to miss this.

To Have & Have Not
Review: Prepping us for his debut album of the same name, "To Have & Have Not" showcases D&B mainstay Jubei with real promise and menace. "The Moment" sees Jubei at his grimiest. Operating on a mean halfstep swagger, he's provided the perfect bed for Roll Deep founder Flowdan to tell a dark tale of gangland ego-trips. "Tip The Scales" features the equally distinctive vocalist MC DRS; whispering his warnings over a sharp steppy beat, he's the ideal MC for Jubei's stark riddim precision. Two sides, two vibes - if this is anything to go by, the album is going to be incredible.

To Have & Have Not (Album Sampler)
Played by: S Man, Rob Perpetual
Review: It's hard to think of a time when Jubei wasn't ubiquitous. Truth be told, it wasn't until 2010 that his blend of crisp, popping percussion and bubbling bass got widely accepted by the general D&B consciousness, but now here we are. Releasing on home label Metalheadz, this double-sider takes no chances from the outset, pushing straight in with old-school cinematic waves of colour between big, bold clouts of finely-tuned percussion. Working with J Kenzo on the flip, expect deeper dubstep sounds with a techy twist. Nicely does it.

Review: Widely regarded in the D&B scene as the "new Marka", Jubei's next single on Metalheadz certainly is something special. Featuring the lyrical prowess of Flowdan, the track centres around a terrifying, turbo-charged bassline and razor-sharp, snapping breaks with eerie, metallic SFX coming in and out of focus in the distance. The raw, aggressive, streetwise vocal packs a punch and accentuates all the individual elements of the track, calling "heartless / cold blooded / hungry..." The whole track is rife with tension, aggression, menace and emotion. Check the video for a great visual portrayal of the piece.

Ingredients Records: Choice Cuts Vol 1
Various
Played by: Physical illusion
Review: Psylence's culinary themed label Ingredients comes up with a brand new concept for their "best of" compilation, which brings together the highlights from the label's success to date and packages them as the "Choice Cuts". Lo and behold there are such tasty morsels as Sato's dark, glistering bassline roller "Detroit Lies Bleeding", the insatiable snapping snares of "Clean Break" and fidgety finesse of "Voyager (feat. Baron Von Alias)" - both by Phobia - and the moody intrigue of Jubei's "The Path". It's a fine selection of tunes, which points to the fact that Ingredients is a very promising label indeed. Watch this space.

Stonehead EP (remixes)
Enei / Jubei feat Riya
Review: Enei is an artist who has been massively blowing up in the D&B scene in the past year, and here he cements his reputation as one of Saint Petersburg's finest on Kasra's Critical imprint. The title track "Stonehead" is all trademark sharp, snapping breaks punctuated by a vitriolic gangster-style vocal urging us to "trust me", with a rolling b-line below. "No Fear", up next, features the lyrical prowess of Riya, who brings in a female Kemo style rap vocal to fidgeting drums and Ramadanman-meets-Rockwell SFX. Enei ups the dancefloor vibes in "Movin Fast" which has a trancey synth-led intro, with punchy drums and warping SFX, dropping into a bonafide banger. Last and not least, Jubei goes in on the remix duties for previous hit "Cracker", transforming it into an even moodier meditation.

Patience
Review: Having done the rounds on the DJ circuit for a long while now, Jubei's "Patience VIP" finally sees the light of day on Goldie's legendary Metalheadz imprint, backed with a super slick Boddika mix of "Alignment". The original starts with a yearning vocal snatch courtesy of Exit Records boss dBridge and progresses into a tune dominated by rattling breaks, hissing percussion, chiming SFX and the unnerving sound of a blade being sharpened on a stone. Boddika reworks the accompanying "Alignment" into a cool, fidgeting Pearson Sound-meets-Addison Groove style venture which is just downright delectable.
