Review: The latest compilation from Scuba's label features some of dance music's most distinctive producers. Recondite delivers "Pour", a throbbing, spaced out groove that will leave listeners mesmerised. Locked Groove, another Hotflush regular, also focuses on the deeper end of techno with the hypnotic, flowing "From Beyond". The compilations also includes "If You Still Want Me", an evocative house cut from Yotam Anvi, where plaintive vocals unravel over a dubbed out groove, while Scuba himself impresses with the synth-heavy "Nineteen Eighty" and, working as SCB, drops the steely, stepping rhythm of "Five Degrees". Floor 2.1 is an essential release for anyone with even a passing interest in forward-facing techno and house.

Review: Developer's label drops a monster 18-track compilation that showcases a diverse range of modern techno styles. There's the drum-heavy loops of CNCPT's "New Science & Telekinesis Facility 10" and the buzzing, percussive grooves that define the contributions from Emitto Audio's "Mars Radiation Terminal 20" and Insolate's "Cern Research Center 35". Taking the compilation to a bleaker place is the eerie, oppressive mood on Patrik Carrera's "Mars Radiation Terminal 25", but there are also more esoteric contributions such as the hypnotic tones of Ryogo Yamamori's "Center For Cyborg Data & Control 75". If you are looking for a view of where dance floor techno is headed, WAV1095 offers a ringside seat.

Review: Inside Out is a brand new series from Aus Music label head Will Saul. It invites DJs and producers to blur the boundaries between traditional artist albums and mix compilations. The concept encourages them to showcase their own music, or the music of those in their own individual circles. Depending on who is curating, it will take different forms. The idea stems from Saul's own approach in the club, which often finds him seeking out brand new and unheard music to play for the first time. There's a strong Detroit techno aesthetic throughout his inaugural release for the series: from the emotive hi-tech soul of his own collaboration with Komon entitled "Positive", Amsterdam legend Gerd had no problem channeling similarly timeless retro vibes either, as heard on the funky techno-soul of "Echoes". They save the best for last on the flip, with the legendary Floorplan's riveting rendition of Primitive Trust's "Little Love" - perfect to get that 3AM style strobe-lit tunnel vision in effect.

Review: Mark Hawkins takes a break from his controversial house project Marquis Hawkes to deliver four purist techno cuts on Developer's label. In some ways, Singularity sees the UK producer return to his roots. After all, Hawkins originally released hard techno on labels like Djax and Uglyfunk in the early 00s, but this new approach is more linear and streamlined. "One Ten" sees him drop a firing percussive track that resounds to eerie riffs, while on "Entranced", he combines a mesmerising synth riff with a pulsing acid backing. "Mist" is slower and more murky, while "Alley Groove" is the rawest track on the release, combining a stripped back metallic rhythm with frequency shifting tones.

Review: Juxta Position is an alias for Mark Hawkins, the producer behind Marquis Hawkes. In contrast to that project, Juxta Position provides a pure techno sound. Hawkins has already released EPs on DVS1's Mistress and Failsafe 01 offers more of this material. On "Sutartines", he lays down a gritty, raw groove that welcomes the haunting chatter of spirits from a supernatural world. "Machines" features a linear, heads-down groove, but here too, Hawkins doesn't opt for a lazy approach, and spacey textures swirl over the tight percussive licks and tough, dense kicks. This is an essential release for fans of purist techno.
