Review: Toledo-based Spanish DJ, producer and mastering engineer David Martin, better known to the music-buying public as K-Effect, comes to New York label Disc-o-lypso with two tracks that, as is his wont, blur the boundaries between progressive house, Italo disco and techno. 'Something Stronger' itself is a deep, dark chugger with a sleazy and at times quite menacing feel, and synths that get more intense as it goes on. The accompanying 'Arms', meanwhile, is a smoother, lighter ride with a buzzing bee-like synth riff serving as the track's primary hook. Think 'Arms' for the warm-up and the title track for those eyes-down 4am moments.

Review: If dark, moody, synth-y disco is what floats your boat, you'll find same by the bucketload on this two-track, four-mix EP from the Spanish duo of David Martin and Diego Gomez, better known as K-Effect. 'Displacement 77' blends influences from Italo disco and Belgian new beat and serves them up with a 'French Kiss'-like throb, and comes accompanied by a more stripped-back remix from Kate Stein. The sweeping, dramatic 'Prometheus' then goes full-on Italo, before being handed over to James Rod for a remix whose slo-mo, sleazy grind is almost apocalyptic in feel, and which to these ears is the EP standout.

Review: Spa In Disco bring us a nu-disco collection that dares to push the envelope a little - many of the tracks here will work just as well on deep, progressive and even tech-house floors as they will in straight-up nu-disco sets. Tony Disco's big 'n' beefy 'Pistolero', for instance, should go down a storm pretty much wherever shapes are thrown to stomping beats and hefty basslines, while LaFrench Toast's 'Spaceball' wouldn't sound out of place on 3am Recordings, Downunder Disco's 'Way Up High' is a dreamy, space-y post-club classic in waiting and Molinaar's 'Cruus' could even slot into more uptempo minimal techno sets. A pleasingly varied, highly enjoyable compilation.

Review: It's been almost eighteen months since the last instalment in Paper Recordings' superb Trash The Wax series, so this fifth volume is well overdue. As usual, bosses Ben Davis and Chris Massey have done a terrific job gathering together a sterling selection of hot-to-trot modern disco cuts from a mixture of heavy hitters and rising stars. Highlights include the Balearic bustle of Rayko's rubbery and groovy "Toxic Avenger (Mix 1)", the strobe-lit Italo-disco throb of Fever Few's "Them Persians", the Barry White style slow disco sensuality of "Music Saved My Life" by Fantasy Love Affair, the body-popping electrofunk/nu-disco fusion of From Beyond's "Old Steel" and the glistening, Clavinet-heavy bounce of Kooky and Damoon's standout "Why Do You Always Take Your Time?"
