New label Stone Tapes assembles a cast of underground artists for this its debut release. First up is Karim Maas. An alias of Ruffhouse producer Tom Cooper, Maas' "Removal Of DECC" is led by gradually unravelling break beats and eerie sound scapes. Pessimist's "Ultranova" is based on a similar approach, with teased out broken beats and whiplash percussion prevailing, while an even more funereal atmosphere dominates on Overlook's "Purr". The mood is so bleak and haunting that it's impossible to escape the chill of winter from its raw, mid-tempo rhythm and fog horn belches. Finally, Talker's "Cross Purposes" ups the tempo for a bruising arrangement, led by dense tribal drums.
