Review: Kendrick's stacking up the paper right here on Maji's Sweet Tooth with his 'Money' EP. The title track sets the tone and juices up our balances with a sweet variety of jungle elements and the meltiest bassline Kendrick's whipped up so far in his career. And the cash keeps rolling in for the rest of the EP... '98' gets all high frequency funky with big rave stabs and just a touch of barbed soul on the vocal samples, 'VTD' goes all stompy stompy drama drama while 'Insanity' finishes on a nice mellow chilled number. Just kidding, as the title suggests, it'll tear you limb from limb. But would you expect anything less from Kendrick? Chuck your loose change at him next time you see him!
Review: Sharpen up them digits, Kendrick and Flatline have linked up and they're demanding to see the best gunfingers you can possibly pull at them. They've got the perfect soundtrack; 'Gunfinger' is the full package as it builds up with rave panache before dropping into an absolutely disgusting laser-firing drop. 'Flawless' meanwhile shows off the pair's deeper sense of groove craft with a purring low end and a springy high leaping around the mix on top. Spooky, savage and succinct - it lives up to its name.
Review: Amplify and Kendrick together on Maji's Sweet Tooth? Now this is something worth writing home about... 'Brixton' takes the lead with a powerful blast of horns and bass textures firing in all kinds of directions. Perfect for chopping up in the mix by surprise, this is crafted with pure drama. It's backed by the equally powerful 'Good Time'. Once again laced with all kinds of glitches and twists, it lives up to its name in every way. More of this type of vibe please.
Review: We need 'Energy' and Kendrick and Dreps have what we need. You can guess what happens next... A smooth transaction, practiced by generations of dancefloors, DJs and MCs for decades and decades and here we find the young talent Kendrick and firing mic man Dreps articulating the process over a tightly coiled, stripped back slapper. With plenty of space for Dreps to do his thing and a build up that will melt your face, your neighbour's face and your entire family's face, there's more than enough 'Energy' to go around.
Review: Music from Bites always, well, bites. The clue is in the name and Kendrick definitely isn't doing anything to allay that namesake with this single, a fiery jump-up rendition of what makes the subgenre such potent club material. 'Say You Do' combines a soulful vocal with juddering stabs and an overall sense of nastiness, whilst 'Shotgun Scatter' fires like a bullet out of a gun in its eagerness to floor you. There's movement galore, plenty of gunfinger moments and, above all, an urge to get down and dirty. Big.
Review: Bites have absolutely bloody killed it with this one. Featuring 4 cuts from Blckhry, Kendrick, Dispute and Spyraxx, New Generation is a collection of pure, gully rollers that all sit comfortably within the scene trends at the moment and which aim to show off the new talent on the label. All four of these could be talked about it in detail, but 'Bite' by Blckhry stands out for the sheer audacity of its bass, a wobbling, pulsating wall of energy that pushes out into all corners of the range. 'Filthy Animal' by Dispute is also top stuff, with a wonderfully solid percussive line and a grungy, gargling back end that'll have any head screwing their face up. Bangers!
Review: With some seriously cool artwork, Kendrick (not the rapper) has landed on Audio Overload with a hard-hitting double tracker which combines a penetrating sense of attitude with a non-nonsense approach to musical arrangements. 'One Billion Years' has an 8-bit, Souped Up vibe in its arrangement that feels slightly cheap but is perfect for a crowded dancefloor, especially with its underpinning in some weighty percussion. 'Under Pressure' is the heavier of the two and grounded in glitchy atmospherics and a sense of space which makes it a pleasure to listen to, its snapping drum line providing the ground rock underneath. Yes boys.
