Review: Label boss Kessell unleashes a sonic beast with "Show Of Force" on Granulart Recordings. Kessell throws down a gauntlet with the title track. It's a fusion of raw, experimental energy and floor-filling precision ? a hallmark of his sound. "Fading Ruins" continues the dystopian soundscape. Shuffling synths paint a picture of a desolate landscape, punctuated by echoing laser fire. It's dark, it's intense, and it's undeniably catchy. Then things shift gears with "Digital Inferno." This track throws a curveball with an offbeat snare, a rarity in techno, that injects a dose of unexpected energy.

Review: Imadub is a fine collaboration between Granulart boss Valent?n 'Kessell' Corujo and Kerqus. Rooted in the Spanish label's dub sound, it nonetheless offers a diverse range of styles. The title track resounds to a powerful, driving bass and atmospheric textures, with the duo maintaining a balance between dance floor power and ethereal sensibilities. That aesthetic is also audible on the deep, chugging "Lotus", which sounds similar to material that appears on Echocord. "Runni Vagna" sees the pair re-focus on the dance floor. Powered by a driving bass, its strength lies in its subtlety, particularly its ticking percussion and churning chords. Rounding off this fine release is the dreamy, melancholic and yet unpronounceable "Yggdrasil".

Review: Fresh from appearances on a swathe of compilations and multi-artist EPs, Kessell pops up on Polegroup with his first solo single since 2021. The long-serving Spanish producer sets his stall out with opener 'Nothing Left To Say', a fuzzy and forthright chunk of lo-fi techno hedonism designed with dark, strobe-lit rooms in mind, before opting for an even bigger, more unsettling and impressively intense sound on 'All That Matters'. Industrial-strength lo-fi techno is the order of the day on the aptly named 'Descending Darkness', while 'Cyclical Nature' is a loopy, acid-fired slab of early morning hypnotism, and 'Inside Trauma' sounds like a tribal, mind-mangling take on Vatican Shadow's more dancefloor-centric work.

Review: The latest release on Faut Section is a dynamic split EP. It opens with "Code Of Deception", a collaboration between label owner Lewis Fautzi and Norbak. Centred on a tough, stepping rhythm, it sees the duo factor in dubbed out percussion for maximum impact. Oscar Mulero's "Zw System" is more direct; it features a rolling, tribal groove, populated by a cacophony of frazzled percussion. Temudo's "Niiv" also makes use of metallic hi hats, but has a punchier feel, thanks to the use of dense kicks. "Time Domain" by Kessell pushes in an opposite direction: focused on a visceral bass and a stepping rhythm, it's a distinctive but functional affair.

Review: For their fourth split release. Granulart brings together well-known techno producers with some rising artists. Inigo Kennedy's "Stellation" is a great stepping track that combines the UK producer's signature crystalline synths with dense drum patterns, while on "Uncoperative Cog" Stanislav Tolkachev teams up with Albert Chiovenda for a searing rhythm track that revolves around pile-driving drums. The tracks from label regulars Kessel and Eric Fetcher are just as impressive. On "The Return of the Archons", Fetcher drops a mesmerising, dubbed out track that also features bleak synths, while Kessel's "Codebreaker" resounds to tough, visceral drums and is the kind of dense tool track that wouldn't sound out of place on a Purposemaker record.

Review: Valent?n Corujo is one half of the Exium act, and in the rest of his time produces as Kessell and runs the Granulart label. As Compilation #06 so effortlessly demonstrates, Corujo has become a master of the dubbed out, scuffled techno sound. The static hiss and muffled thud of "Fonec" and "Graviton" bleed seamlessly into one another, while on "Kalliope", this singular artist lets gentle wave upon wave of sound build over an understated backing. Despite his low profile and no frills approach to putting out music, Corujo is one of Europe's finest and most consistent producers -and more bruising tracks like "Noctua" and " Kaizen" show that his appeal isn't limited or should lurk in dubbed out shadows.

Review: The latest release on Granulart comes from its owner, Valent?n Corujo aka Kessell. Proving that thirteen is not an unlucky number, the Spanish producer lays down a series of tough but distinctive club tracks. "Raising Our Consciousness" resounds to menacing, looped riffs and pounding kicks that call to mind classic Lost Recordings, while on "Afterlife" the Granulart boss opts for a harder, more stripped back sound, as dark filters accompany concrete drums and relentless percussion. "Modal Operator" adeptly replicates Mills-style panel-beating drums, while closing track "Living Cells" is a relentless, pulsating workout that is powered by a system-levelling bass.

Review: Spanish producer Valentin Corujo knows how to get a groove on. On his latest release as Kessell - this time on Developer's label - he drops five killer dance floor tracks, each one as functional as the next. The first "Ecliptica" revolves around the kind of nocturnal bass that sounds inspired by Suburban Knight, while the second one is metallic and stripped back, but undercut with an acidic flavour. Number three is tough and pushing towards the edge of distortion thanks to its grainy kicks and noisy filters, while on the fourth version is slightly more reserved and sees Corujo draw on the spacey end of Sandwell District for inspiration. Closing the release is the fifth instalment, a rolling, hypnotic track that draws on loop techno's legacy but deploys these sensibilities in a visceral setting.

Review: The latest release from Valentin Corujo aka Kessell draws on 90s minimal techno for inspiration. A nagging, acidic bass is at the heart of the title track, while on "Psychosocial", a darker, heavier rhythm prevails. Both arrangements sound relatively restrained when compared to "Intensity of Perception". There, a cold, bleep-laden rhythm dominates and sounds redolent of classic Robert Hood and even Joey Beltram's "Game Form". Ramping up gradually in intensity as it progresses, it's one of Corujo's finest productions so far. The chord-heavy "Shirka" maintains the hard-edged sound as it is delivered with grainy drums, while "Helical Structure" ends the EP in a percussive flurry.

Review: Oscar Mulero's Polegroup label closes the year with a mammoth compilation that defines the current state of the techno nation. As Unknown Landscapes shows, it is a diverse place. There's droning ambience from Daphne RXX, while Reeko, Reggy Van Oers and Mike Parker deliver bleep-heavy, hypnotic groove that draw on the influence of F.U.S.E and Sandwell District. Heads-down loopy fare is also catered for - with the spiky percussion and bleak filters of Jonas Koop's "Fu Factor" standing out - and the form also revisits the rough, analogue sound of the 90s thanks to Karl Bult and American scene veteran DJ Hyperactive's contributions.

Review: Oscar Mulero's other label celebrates its fifth anniversary with this mammoth compendium. For fans of the Spanish imprint's club techno there is no shortage of material to get excited about; the Lewis Fautzi remix of Exium's "Nucleoid" is a hypnotic groove par excellence, its confluence of acid and droning pulses arcing to a tantalising climax, while Christian Wunsch and Exium once again represent the tough industrial and dub-meets-noise sound of the label on "Emission Lines" and "Biolag" respectively. However, there is also a more musical, reflective side to Poelgroup's sound. In this regard, 5 Years delivers most impressively with the chilling strings of the Architectural project from Reeko as well as the Spanish producer's cinematic, break beat-led reshape of Jonas Kopp's "M31".
