U Were - (5:10)
140 BPM Review: He's just 20 years old, hails from Seattle and seamlessly sums up the quintessential sound of now. Kid Smpl's bass music credentials are fully ticked as he draws on dubstep and garage, remoulding sounds like putty into the most delectable arrangements. The title track is all crackling white noise, gentle instrumentals, pulsing beats and murmuring bass, while "On My Mind" blends cooing melodies with Burial-esque vocal sketches. "Seasons" is a softer, more nostalgic cut, full of echoes, glimpses and hints, with rippling beats and segues into the Joy Orbison-influenced, synth-heavy "Woman" before finishing up with the sumptuous bassline roller "U Were". One for fans of Joy O, Pearson Sound, James Blake et al.
