Review: Back in 2016, Ed Banger main man and nu-rave scene stalwart Pedro Winter AKA Busy P delivered a particularly excitable DJ mix that was affixed to the front of copies of Mixmag. Now the long-running magazine has decided to make it available as a paid-for download, with a big chunk of sales revenue going to the producers and remixers who feature. It remains a hugely entertaining excursion, with Winter quickly charging between glassy-eyed synth-pop (Breakbot, as remixed by Fatima Yamaha), mangled electro-pop cheeriness (Justice), contemporary French house (Mr Oizo, Cassius and Pharrell Williams), cowbell-sporting acid house revivalism (Playgroup, Kiddy Smile), Middle Eastern headiness (Acid Arab), and the raw Sheffield sleaze of Crooked Man.

Review: Parisian Kiddy Smile is now firmly in the big league. This is the artist's second EP for the big and wondrous imprint that is Defected, and it's clear that Kiddy Smile's 80s and 90s art direction is coming through louder than ever. Both version of "Teardrops In The Box" sound like dark, sexy Chicago house; the sort that was being blasted out by DJs like Ron Hardy in the city's infamous Muzic Box. There's a remix and dub take from Mystic Bill in here too, the latter of which hints at production greats like Mood II Swing. TIP!

Review: Parisian Kiddy Smile was said to be discovered by Gossip frontwoman Beth Ditto and he seeks to spread retro love in his beats. Said to be 'deeply Influenced by the '80s and '90s house music and the fabulous legacy of the ballroom scene', he has even performed live alongside Hercules & Love Affair and LCD Soundsystem. "Let A Bitch Know" is redolent of the heyday of Chicago acid house with its raw 808 rhythms, squelchy 303 bassline and pitch shifted vocals. There's a remix by Catz 'N Dogz too, but for our money it's all about Windy City homeboy Gene Farris, whose rendition stays true to the original but somehow gives the track a nice overall sheen and really glues all the elements together.
