Review: Kobosil's label delivers the third edition of the Sektion compilation. As with previous volumes, there are well-known contributors. OBU and Krl Mx both deliver slamming industrial techno on "Wir Sind Die Nacht" and "Techno Tool For Trashkids" respectively. In Verruf opts for a different approach. On "Frei", soaring synths combine with screeching vocals, making for an epic, rousing affair.
There are also some newer contributors. These include Warin D, who drops the gabba-influenced banger "I Apologize For My Acid" and SZG, whose "Parametric" integrates tranced out synths into a pulsating, throbbing groove. Like every release on R-Label Group, each track on Sektion 3 is sure to cause dance floor mayhem.

Review: Despite his young age, Kobosil has already got a series of well-regarded releases to his credit, including a debut album on Ostgut. 105, his latest release for the label, will only serve to consolidate this reputation. "OOL" resounds to a pounding rhythm and rough, frazzled kicks, exactly the kind of track that is tailor made for Berghain's main floor. "Bei Nacht (178)" is of a similar disposition and revolves around a rolling, percussive groove and tough drums, while the aptly-named "Derange" sees the young German artist deliver a pacey, percussive workout. The most impressive track is "Backmask N"; a tough, pacey percussive roller, it hinges on the kind of sub-bass menace that Suburban Knight used to specialise in.

Review: German producer Kobosil is only in his 20s, but with a residency at Berghain and releases on its in-house label and Marcel Dettmann's MDR, he has already achieved more than most young artists. Grow, his debut album, is his most ambitious move so far. With the exception of the industrial-charged "Aim For Target" and the tough house of "The Living Ritual", his main focus is on dark, eerie ambient shapes - check the title track - and the spooky drones of "Telling The Truth" and "To See Land". It's far removed from more typical Kobosil fare like the hypnotic, linear "You Answered With Love", but Grow is an assured, adventurous move from Berghain techno's boy wonder.

Konvergent - (5:52) 133 BPM
Per - (5:36) 135 BPM
Review: It's strange to think that the title of Kobosil's latest release is a reference to his birth year, the same year that Berlin institution Hardwax first opened its doors. Despite being in his mid-20s, this protege of Berghain shows that he is very skilful at creating tough but distinctive techno. "Konvergent" is all pumping, rolling bass and doubled up claps, while "Per" sees him push in a similar direction - on this occasion however, he lets spiky percussive volleys accompany his grimy pulses. There is a men-acing, moody air throughout this record, but it never feels affected or put on, nor does Kobosil rely on cheap tricks to achieve this effect. It means that the dark ambience of "Athtar" is just as spine-chillingly evocative as the howling wind and powerful bass of techno.

Review: You have to admire Ostgut Ton's ambition. While celebrating a decade in dance music with a compilation of exclusive, previously unheard music is now standard practice amongst leading underground labels, few would have the balls to release it with such a killer tracklisting as Zehn. Across the 30 tracks (count 'em!) you get a who's who of Berghain and Panorama Bar associates delivering a quite outstanding selection of left-of-centre techno and deep European house, with Marcel Dettmann, Boris, Virginia, Steffi, DVS1, Martyn, Tobias and Ben Klock all featuring. Highlights naturally come thick and fast, from the spacey electronics, heady textures and hypnotic rhythms of Function's "DX3 Analog Bass Seq", and the rush-inducing, string-laden house warmth of Matthew Styles' remix of Dinky's "Planes", to the picturesque intelligent techno of Doms & Deykers.

Review: Ostgut's sister label continues its voyage into the grey area between the abstract and the main floor with a release that may come to be merely known as 'hyphens'. While not completely forsaking the dance floor, "Contact", is all dark drones and shattered glass percussion riding the dark backing rhythm, while "Aggregate" veers back towards club usage with its hammering drums, razor sharp percussion and concrete beats. "Osmium" also shows that there is more common ground between the abstract and the dance floor with filtered percussion and acidic bass licks providing all of the action, before "Herschel" dips back into the abstract with dreamy synths and breathy vocals underpinned by subtle broken beats.
