Review: This year saw Berlin clubbing institution Watergate turn 20 years old. To celebrate the milestone, they took the experience outside the club for a full weekend rave, plus the release of this mammoth 20 track compilation of new and unreleased tracks. Highlights come from legendary artists such as the ever reliable Henrik Schwarz who appears with the highly engineered soul of "You Need Attitude", veteran of the scene Sasha gets a seriously heads-down groove happening on "Wolf Cider", Hamburg maximal heroes Extrawelt deliver as expected on the hypnotising "Rover" and former Mobilee co-head Anja Schneider gets the hands in the air on the uplifting house of "Can't You See Me No More?' plus many others.

Review: Gewinnt Freunde all started from friendship and a love for music in 2006, and this philosophy still drives Nico and Christian's music. It's also why the long-awaited return of label heads Kollektiv Turmstrasse marks the perfect moment to get back to the unique sound the Hamburg-based label has become known for over the last 13 years. The Ribbon Reef EP is a proper journey: from the steely and austere dub techno pummeler of the title track which is loaded directly off the factory floor, to the dreamy and hypnotic journey of "New Star" which is by comparison euphoric and transcendental - complimenting the last track perfectly like yin and yang.

Review: It seems as if 15 years have just flown by since Berlin institution Watergate first opened their doors at the base of the famous Oberbaumbrucke, overlooking the River Spree and where long queues run down the street every weekend to get into one of the best clubs in the world. To celebrate their journey over the last decade and a half, they have put together a special anniversary release of 25 new, exclusive and formerly unreleased tracks. Residents of the superclub all appear, such as Hamburg native Matthias Meyer who teams up with Ryan Davis on the evocative "Hope", famed local duo Tiefschwarz deliver the slow burning and moody tech house of "Control", Sweden's La Fleur (of Power Plant fame) delivers the acidic bump and shuffle of "Femton" and former Stattbad resident and Beste Modus boss Cinthie gets deep on the classic house sound of "Hatschi Hatschi" which has a whole heap of swing to it!

Review: The Nu Breed series was conceived back in the early 00s as a means of showcasing upcoming DJs of that era, such as Danny Howells and Lee Burridge. Now that the series has re-launched, the same concept applies and the latest DJ to feature is German spinner Oliver Schories. With a focus on deep, emotional house music, he weaves an intoxicating path that moves from the slurred vocals of Rico Puestel's "Volute" and the melancholic piano keys of Black Light Smoke's "Fire in My Head" into driving, techy tracks like Jamie Trench's "It Never Stops" and Oliver Deutschmann's hypnotic minimalism, "Control", before climaxing with Chateau Flight's sprawling remake of AtJazz's "It's Complete". Here's to the next generation of new breed DJs.

Review: The fifth installment in this series sees German label Connaisseur compile some of the finest deep house in circulation. Thankfully, nothing here has that mushy sameness that has become so pervasive; instead artists like Timelapse, Distortion and Musumeci bring fragile, floaty melodies and chiming chords to their reduced rhythms and dubby grooves. Few Nolder and Lehar up the ante somewhat and the booming bass and cacophony of chilling strings on the latter's "Sarga" is a thing of wonder. Overall though, it's the reflective approach that impresses most; Sam K's "Elido", with its dreamy pattern of chords and vocal that swoons "I will build a castle with a tower high" is worth the price of this compilation alone

Review: Kollektiv Turmstrasse specialise in making a uniquely German take on house music. Melodic and melancholic, featuring samples of live instruments, but also with that unmistakably German penchant for precision, their music is both functional and emotive. This collection is an excellent introduction to their music. There are reflective contributions like 'Videt', unashamed tranced out grooves ('Flaschenpost') and stripped back tracks that veer into hugely uplifting melodic segues. But the most rewarding moments feature live musical samples and there is no better example of this than 'Luechtoorn'. It starts off as a rolling groove that stealthily introduces plaintive keys and sensuous woodwind that loom enticingly in the arrangement before disappearing again.

Review: Hamburg-based duo Nico and Christian aka Kollektiv Turmstrasse make the most of what's left of Summer by releasing this EP featuring shimmering remixes of two tracks: "Lapache" and "Ordinary". Alex Q, Lake People, YouANDMe & Cosmic Cowboys rework the former in poolside electro-house forms respectively. Meanwhile "Ordinary" features three of the EPs stand-out remixes: an eccentric sleazy house-turns-hippy-trip-out from Alex Q, a harder jackin' mix by Mick Rubins and a haunting melancholic tech-house version by Lake People. Here comes the sun.

Review: The ever reliable Germany imprint Connaisseur returns with this rock-solid four tracker. First up is Michael Sowbug's "Proof", in which a political speech is twisted in a drunken manner similar to Dinky's remix of The Royal We's "Party Guilt" and placed atop a sumptuous bed of cosy pads, before UK deep house ledge Jimpster turns in a typically stylish instrumental refix of Kollektiv Tumrstrasse's "Was Bleibt". Up next is Distortion's stargazing, arpeggio-driven "Ballte Your Music" and, finally, "Have It Your Way", a sultry collaboration between Alex Jones and Shenoda.

Review: The German house duo's "Uneins" gets two different remix treatments. The version by Of Norway is closer in sound to Turmstrasse's own approach as clapping hands are smartly deployed as a percussive backing and the breathy, building synths that are the trademark of labels like Diynamic and Conaisseur rise to the fore. However, the key difference here is the soulful male vocals that gradually come to dominate the track, and ensure that the breakdown is even more epic than usual. Aril Brikha's take sees him opt for a different tact than is his wont. Ditching the epic techno melodies, the Swedish producer uses solid beats, a funk bassline and rasping percussion to create a soulful, unhurried house groove.
