Review: In Kolsch's fifth offering on the Kompakt label, "I Talk To Water," we embark on an emotionally charged and profoundly personal musical odyssey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music. This release stands as the artist's most intimate work to date, encompassing all the signature elements that have made his music widely acclaimed - lush melodic techno, trance-like structures, and sensuous, shivery textures. The genesis of "I Talk To Water" is rooted in Kolsch's reverence for his late father, Patrick Reilly, who succumbed to brain cancer in 2003. Review: It's been five years since Kolsch and Tiga's last collaboration. In that period, a lot has changed, musically and socially. But while the pandemic is over, the art of writing a catchy tune endures. The title track is an epic affair that is sure to become an end of night closer title track. Underpinned by a jacking rhythm, it features Tiga's voice married to a gently undulating synth melody. "Almost Everything" is just as infectious but more mellow. On this occasion, the dissected vocals are scattered over a squelchy bass, dreamy chords and firing percussion. It makes for a beautiful, evocative track that, like "Hand In Hand", is sure to ignite dance floors.

Review: Following on from releasing a brace of EPs last year - including a fine collaborative release with Flug on Drumcode - Dubfire teams up again with a like-minded artist for his first material of 2022. Issued on IPSO, which has already hosted collaborations between Kolsch and luminaries like Michael Mayer, Sasha and Tiga, Ulm is a one-track release that shines majestically. Powered by dubbed out beats and hissing percussive textures, the track's centrepiece is the shimmering synth line that swathes the arrangement in a swirling tapestry of melodies. Working with Kolsch has revealed a deeper side to Dubfire's sound, which he will hopefully interrogate further this year.

Review: Kolsch continues his prolific run on Kompakt - last year he delivered four EPs and an album - with a blistering release for the Speicher sub-label. Powered by a pulsating bass and hollowed out drums, "Woohman" is laced with gurgling acid lines that guarantee the track reaches Plastikman-like levels of intensity, albeit in its own nuanced manner. There's a very different dynamic at play on "Speicherband": here, Kolsch conjures up a grungy groove that resounds to layered horn samples, with the arrangement breaking down unexpectedly before it resumes again on its shuffling path. It shows that despite his mainstream status, Kolsch continues to innovate.

First offering "Hold" is an absolutely epic expression in night time drama, with a razor sharp bass playing centre stage that is underpinned by darkened trance motifs and clipped minimal techno style drum programming. Second offering "Clear" by comparison is a more optimistic affair, a euphoric combination of Motor City strings with Kompakt style melodic progressions combining altogether for a glassy-eyed and bittersweet moment on the dancefloor.

Review: Most labels and collectives are challenged to last a decade in electronic music's fleeting landscape, but so far Kompakt has endured for twice this lifespan. This is largely due to the fact that the Cologne operation boasts a tightly-knit group of artists who continue to release on its many labels. For the twentieth edition of the annual Total compilation series, many of those producers come correct; Robag Wruhme and founder Michael Mayer both deliver ponderous deep techno tracks, while Jurgen Paape goes even farther, veering into guitar-spangled melancholia on "Vox Acris". This introspective mood seeps through to more overt dance floor tracks, with Sascha Funke's eerie "Atze" and Voigt & Voigt's "Schopper Da Leu" delivering understated but impactful results.

Rune Reilly Kolsch is absolutely synonymous with the label's sound aesthetic by now and follows up last month's thriller "Shoulder Of Giants". This time around, he provides the subtle yet elevating trance arpeggios of "Time" which are supported by breathtaking female vocals and roaring string arrangements which are altogether sure to cause a stir on the dancefloor. This is followed by the more subdued and introspective arrangement of "Sleeper Must Awaken" featuring Kolsch's signature razor sharp synth leads against a backdrop of strong electro style beats - greyscale deep house at its finest.

Review: 2019 certainly was a big one for Rune Reilly Kolsch; a year which saw a brilliant collaboration with Sasha in the form of "The Lights" (on his IPSO imprint) as well as that well received installment of 'fabric presents' for the London clubbing institution. As we all know by now, he's no stranger to Cologne institution Kompakt, being a staple of the revered label for nigh on a decade - and here he kicks off 2020 with a big bang. Between the soundscape of metallic textures, an evocative string arrangement and that razor sharp bassline that's a constant throughout, "Shoulder Of Giants" sees the Danish producer present his unmistakable sound to the main room for some serious dancefloor drama. Second offering "Glypto" features theatrical vocals in contrast to modular style blips and bleeps, to create a seething minimal tech house arrangement that's equally sure to create some tension and suspense in the club.

Review: Following releases with Tiga and Michael Mayer, the latest collaborator with Kolsch on his IPSO label is Sasha, the legendary DJ. In its original format, "The Lights" is a hypnotic slice of tech-house that resounds to shiny synths and atmospheric melodies unfolding over a bouncy groove. It's exactly the type of melodic track that you'd expect to hear in one of the veteran DJ's own sets. There's also a dub version included, which sees the pair bring the solid bass to the fore, but those spine-tingling melodies, a seamless fusion of Germanic iciness and the tripped out aesthetic of UK tech-house, remain at the core of the arrangement.

Review: Cologne institution Kompakt's longstanding Speicher series has had a reputation for idiosyncratic and powerful techno with clear dancefloor ambitions. Who better to take care of the label's next edition than label staple Rune Reilly Kolsch: the unstoppable Dane getting down with his immaculate, evocative and utterly majestic sound on the daydream fantasy of "Emoticon". His second offering here entitled "Little Death" is a fitting name for this brooding serving of dancefloor drama; powered by a seething sub bass, falling acid and enchanting choral arragments - you are definitely going to know this one when you hear it!

Review: Following last year's collaboration with Kompakt boss Michael Mayer, Kolsch now teams up with another well-known artist. This co-authored release with Tiga starts off in relatively unfamiliar territory: the title track is a fuzzy, chord heavy workout that has an evocative edge thanks to its airy synths. "Still So High" sees the pair revert to type as a buzzing bass supports vocal samples and atmospheric sound scapes, but it's "First Blood" that really captures both artists' style most accurately. A pile-driving rhythm, raw drums and fuzzy, filtered percussive bursts support an 80s synth line that will ensure the latest IPSO collaboration is unforgettable.

Review: Following on from Dogma, his collaboration with Kompakt's Michael Mayer back in 2016, Kolsch now invites Tiga to work with him for the second release on IPSO. It's a great meeting of minds; from the Turbo boss' side, there's an intuitive understanding of dance floor dynamics borne out by years spinning in clubs. It is articulated here by the percussive rhythm that underpins "Hal", while, from Kolsch's side come those frazzled vocal samples and the wide-eyed chord builds. Unite all of these elements and the track is just as powerful as the super computer of the same name from the seminal 2011: A Space Odyssey.

Review: Danish DJ and producer Rune Reilly Kolsch started out around 2003 and first gained success with his track "Calabria". He went on to efforts in the groups Artificial Funk and Enur together (with his brother Johannes Torpe) and then creating some big tunes in the mid noughties minimal boom, under aliases like Ink & Needle and Tattoo. The first material as Kolsch surfaced around 2010 and he's been a staple of the Cologne based Kompakt family ever since. With 1989, he presents the final chapter in a trilogy that started with an exploration of early childhood memories and influences (on 1977) and continued on 1983: which soundtracked his childhood travels throughout Europe. With 1989, we have arrived at his early teens. Kolsch explains it was "a difficult time in my life, where I mostly just remember the greyness of it all." It isn't all a brooding affair though, for the most part. From the sombre symphonic acid of "Serij", the pop inflected tech-house of "In Bottles" (featuring Aurora) to the epically euphoric style of dancefloor drama you'd usually attribute to the man like on "Grau" or the anthemic lead single "Liath". It's quite a story he presents here.
