Pea Soup/Iodine
Pea Soup - (5:50) 126 BPM Hot
Iodine - (5:44) 126 BPM
Played by: Near
Review: Joe Cowton's only other release this year was his collaboration with Peverelist, so it's good to hear him back with fresh solo material on Livity. "Pea Soup" resounds to jet noises, slippery blips and bleeps and cosmic chimes backed against a steppy rhythm and what sound like a bass sample from Richie Hawtin's classic Bang the Box. By contrast, "Iodine" is more straightforward. It still has that steppy rhythm that comes as standard on pretty much all Livity records, but it is less complex than "Pea Soup" and its churning chords sound influenced by Basic Channel and late 90s records on Force Inc.

Review: The steady rise of Joe Cowton has been such that Utility, his long-awaited debut album, is arguably one of the most hotly anticipated techno sets of 2016. Happily, it's a fine set, brilliantly showcasing his instinctive way with booming, stripped-back drum patterns, sparse textures, and alien electronics. While there are forays into more house leaning pastures - see the dreamy, metallic shuffle of "Scido" - and cascading ambience ("Some Cats" and "A Bluish Shadow"), it's naturally the album's more bombastic, club-ready stompers that really stand out. These include two subtle reinventions of early British bleep techno ("Balance" and "Shots Fired") that aptly showcase the London-based producer's Northern roots.

Kowton vs Dusk EP
Dusk - "Fraction" - (5:31) 138 BPM
Dusk - "Fraction" (Kowton remix) - (5:36) 138 BPM
Kowton - "Looking At You" - (5:50) 128 BPM Hot
Review: With 2011 being Keysound's most prolific year to date, the label enters 2012 with a fantastic EP from two of the label's old hands, Dusk and Kowton. Utilising a clipped UK Funky beat and restless sub with symphonic ambience, Dusk's "Fraction" expertly channels its rhythmic intensity, while Kowton's rework highlights the production's darker corners, utilising sinister melodies and collage-like movie samples to nightmarish effect. Kowton's "Looking At You" is up next; taking a brittle Destiny's Child sample as its main hook, it manages to sidestep the problems usually associated with contemporary R&B sampling by keeping its melodic elements to a minimum, concentrating on shackled garage rhythms and a growling undercurrent of bass. It's more overtly contemporary than his recent material for [Naked Lunch] and Idle Hands, but still has all the unmistakable hallmarks of his unique sound.

On Repeat
On Repeat - (6:10) 85 BPM Hot
Holding Patterns - (6:33) 127 BPM
Played by: Resident Advisor
Review: Following on from the rip-roaring impact of Pev & Hodge's 21 Versions single, Kowton returns to the Livity homestead with two new tracks that further expand on the intriguing new pastures the label is moving into. The rasping drums are still present in abundance, but they're laden with an alien melodic cargo that bring a welcome dose of warmth into the surroundings. "On Repeat" in particular builds into a most beautiful of synth-led breakdowns before ripping back into primal, bleep driven bass business. "Holding Patterns" meanwhile whips up a straight-edged techno throwdown of the highest order, peppered with cosmic sound effects from the kosmische school of processing.

Signal 3
Signal 3 - (6:24) 83 BPM
Low Strobe - (6:25) 162 BPM Hot
Played by: Paul Mac, GAZE ILL
Review: Any new single from the musical hive mind of Tom 'Peverelist' Ford and Joe 'Kowton' Cowton is cause for celebration, but Signal 3 is particularly potent even by their high standards. The title track is particularly more-ish, with twisted, looped bleep melodies and muffled rave electronics reclining over a typically dubbed-out, bass-heavy, dystopian rhythm. As with much of their material, it's formidably out there, but with enough weight to the spaced-out groove to suggest real dancefloor potential. "Low Strobe" feels a little deeper - despite its' picturesque elements - with some quietly attractive synth chords adding a surprise shimmer to an otherwise thrillingly low-slung techno groove.

Review: This year has been a productive one for the Livity Sound label, if not the trio of producers behind the acclaimed outfit. While new collaborative material from Peverelist, Kowton and Asusu has been thin on the ground, the Livity Sound Remixes series - in which friends from the techno and bass scenes remodel their work - has spawned six essential 12" singles. Here, that material makes it to digital for the first time. It's packed with inspired, floor-friendly interpretations, from the contemporary bleep-and-bass techno of Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup's rework of Kowton's "More Games", to the distorted throb and intense loops of Ghost 202's faintly foreboding version of Peverlist's "Livity".

Mirror Song EP
Mirror Song - (5:37) Hot
And What? - (5:10)
Mirror Song (techno remix) - (5:39)
Review: In what might have seemed like an unlikely pairing at first, Kowton and Julio Bashmore join forces for a Bristolian crossover that yields the perfect kind of hybrid madness for these times. "Mirror Song" comes on with the gritty percussive dread that embodies Kowton's more recent output, while the more insistent house groove and catchy sample hooks show the poppier sensibilities Bashmore has brought to the table. "And What?" is less easy going, fraying and splintering into that broken snare snarl that could only come from Kowton, dodging any kind of melody in favour of industrial textures and morose bass stabs. For those needing a more linear kind of beat to work with, the "techno remix" of "Mirror Song" should fit the bill very nicely indeed.

Review: With the dust barely settled from his last grime-infused monster on Livity Sound, Bristol's Kowton returns on the city's premier label at the bass/house/techno intersection, Idle Hands. "Never Liked Dancing" is classic Kowton - raw, stripped back drum machine rhythms, sprung bass, all twisted into unique shapes that hint at sinister figures lurking in the shadows. "Track Mute" meanwhile takes that simmering energy and turns the heat right up, as rapid stabs, laser FX and a churning low end intermingle in a sweaty Stokes Croft basement vibe. As with any Kowton release, this is essential.

Review: One of Damian Lazarus's main strengths as a DJ is that he understands the art of being a curator. It probably has a lot to do with his role as A&R for City Rockers and now his own label, but Lazarus is an expert at sourcing music that others may have overlooked and blending it with other gems. It explains why the fourth Get Lost is not full of big tunes on hyped labels, but instead contains the spacey house of Nitin's "Blink Twice", the 808 electro drums of Nico Purman's "Fade Away" and the seductive orchestral woodwind of Mario & Vidis Lazarus's "Kashyyyk" - an anthem in the parallel world where Lazarus reigns .

Review: Kowton (aka Joe Cowton) is the latest in a proud and distinguished line of Bristol based bass music producers, and his two track EP on the fledgling Idle Hands imprint (also based in Bristol) is nothing short of superb. Treading the grey area between house, techno and dubstep, "Basic Music Knowledge" utilises a shuffling house beat and cut-up garage vocals, much in the same vein as Ramadanman and Midland's recent EP on Will Saul's Aus Music. On the flip, "Hunger" is like a subtle, pitched down slice of deep techno hiding behind clunking rhythms and uncertain beat.
