Review: No prizes for guessing what's going on here, as Leeds based Bomb Strikes label round up some of the best bits from their 2023 catalogue. The Niceguys' distinctly Prince-esque opener 'Strip It' sets the tone for a collection that draws mostly on hip-hop, funk and breaks for inspiration, with the emphasis firmly on uptempo, party-hearty vibes - see the fast 'n' furious rapping on Boca 45's '45s', the fat, squelchy funk of Tom Booze's 'T-Funk' (a track that wears its influences proudly in its title), or Nat Tate's charmingy, organic take on Gala classic 'Freed From Desire'. But there's room, too, for Bazza Ranks, Turnstyle & Venessa Jackson's cheesy-but-irresistible disco-houser 'Back To You', as well as Kraak & Smaak's driving, euphoric 'Get Live, Get Down', making for a strong, varied package overall.

Review: Kraak & Smaak round off their 20th birthday celebrations by serving up a suitably sizeable collection of 'new and classic remixes' of cuts from their catalogue. As you'd expect given the depth and variety at the heart of their party-starting sound, the collected remixes touch on many sounds, styles and moods, from the head-nodding dancefloor soul of Moods remix of 'Squeeze Me', the revivalist P-funk-meets-neo-boogie colour of Jafunk's rub of 'UR Freak', and the horn-toting, Latin funk flex of the Allergies revision of 'Money in the Bag', to the dubby downtempo loveliness of Richard Dorfmeister's rework of 'Stumble', the woozy deep house lushness of Girls of the Internet's remix of 'Forgot About You', Psychemagik's deliciously cosmic re-wire of 'Corsica '80', and the acid house tweakery of Joe Goddard's interpretation of Romanthony hook-up 'Let's Go Back'

Review: Here we have new mixes of a track that first emerged on Kraak & Smaak's 'Plastic People' album back in 2004, courtesy of X-Press 2 legend and Ramrock Records main man Ashley Beedle. The original was a kind of funked-up deep houser but Beedle opts for a slightly smoother approach and draws out the track's inherent soulfulness, with that Cee Lo Green-like falsetto vocal firmly taking centrestage on his No West Vocal Remix. That comes accompanied quite simply by matching Dub, Instrumental and Edit versions so there's not much more to tell you, except that on older, more soulfully-inclined floors, 'Bobby & Whitney' should go down a treat.

Review: Dutch boogie masters Kraak & Smaak mark two whole decades in the game this year, and to celebrate the occasion, Jalapeno bring us this best-of selection culled from releases both on Jalapeno and on their own Boogie Angst imprint. Kraak & Smaak have always neatly walked the line between straight-up funk, disco and boogie on the one hand, and more pop-oriented productions on the other, and so it is here: the first half of the album is packed with 'new old' funk and soul gems like 'Danse Macabre' and 'I Don't Know', while the second half concentrates largely on the more commercial side of their oeuvre, not to mention their collaborations with a wide array of guest vocalists. Fans will have most of what's here already, of course, but it's a fitting tribute to an impressive career to date - long may it continue.

Review: It's been over 15 years since this writer was one of 100 or so who gathered in a sweaty, low-raftered Amsterdam basement to witness the live debut of Dutch funk and disco hopefuls Kraak & Smaak. Since then, the young pretenders have gone on to become true elder statesmen of the scene - which is another way of saying that you just KNOW the quality bar on this latest collection of contemporary disco, funk and boogie grooves is going to be set high. There's no room here to go into all 24 tracks one-by-one, but with contributions from the likes of Ben Gomori, Flevans and Hotmood alongside a host of more up-and-coming names, suffice to say lovers of the aforementioned styles will not be in the least bit disappointed.

Review: Taken from the Bombstrikes compilation - Disco Funkin' Vol. 5, curated by legends of the scene Kraak & Smaak, 'Get Live Get Down' is the Dutch masters at their imperious dancefloor-focused best. Percussion rolls, 4/4 rhythms, and arpeggio bass combine with strings and key stabs to relentlessly build the track into an all-out disco groover. Once the vocal drop is added, it becomes impossible to resist the urge to move as the energy levels soar. Kraak & Smaak are about to celebrate 20 years of being at the top of their game and this outing only reinforces their special talent.

Review: Boogie Angst's series of club-focused, compilation style EPs can always be relied upon to deliver the goods. Predictably, this third volume in the ongoing series is packed to the rafters with tasty musical treats. Label bosses Kraak & Smaak lead the way with 'Fitipaldi', a Clavinet-sporting slab of Italo-disco influenced cheeriness that's available in both original mix and extended version variations. You also get two takes on Drop Out Orchestra's kaleidoscopic, string-laden disco-boogie rework of Steven Kimber's 'I Wanna Be The One'. Elsewhere, rising star Pontchartrain dances his way through nu-disco-influenced piano-house territory on 'Cheap Plants', King Mutapa reaches for warming Rhodes keys and jazzy disco bass on the deep house influenced 'Gimme That Funk' and FUTVRST offers up a filter-heavy exploration of French Touch influenced mid-tempo disco-house.

Review: After celebrating their landmark 40th anniversary last year, long running Ibiza-based institution Cafe Del Mar are back for the next annual compilation in their series. Cafe Del Mar Chillhouse Mix XII does exactly what it says on the tin, and quite frankly no one else quite does it better. Highlights come from: legend Ian Pooley on the bumpin' late night groove of "Puzzled", Montreal staple Fred Everything getting the remix treatment by the ever reliable I:cube on the ultra deep sleaze of "Barbarella" and British nu-disco heroes Bent also getting a low slung rework by the mighty Ashley Beedle on "Friends". Review: Birdee is a rising star of the nu-disco and re-edit scenes, so it makes perfect sense that Bomb Strikes has recruited him to curate and mix the latest volume in their excellent Disco Funkin' compilation series. As you'd expect, it's a thoroughly and joyous affair, rich in colourful synth sounds, funky disco basslines and beats that flit between housed-up heaviness and more organic-sounding, less pumped-up grooves. There are tons of essential cuts amongst the 25 unmixed tracks on show, with highlights including the sun-bright rush of Pete Herbert's remix of Da Chick's 'Chick a Boom', the crunchy Clavinet-sporting disco-funk of Shaka Loves You's 'Let's Move (SLY Disco Rub)', the slick French Touch style warmth of Birdee's own 'Thinking About You' and Ray Mang's celebratory revision of Smoove & Turrell's 'Do It'.

Review: "Same Blood" is taken from the forthcoming 'Pleasure Centre' - the sixth studio album by Dutch trio Kraak & Smaak released on their own label Boogie Angst. The album's 'West Coast vibe' is due to them moving to Los Angeles for a month back in 2019, where they stayed in Echo Park and recorded in local studios, and sometimes even in the homes or backyards garages of their collaborators featured on the album. Featuring the emotive vocals of The Palms, "Same Blood" is a low slung and emotive number incorporating soul, funk, disco and deep house elements for an altogether captivating experience.

Review: The original version of "All I Want" is one of the lesser-known gems in Kraak & SMaak's epic back catalogue. The squelchy slab of revivalist electrofunk, which features a brilliant lead vocal from Keyhole, was first sent to DJs five years ago, but for whatever reason was only released earlier this year. Here the long-serving Dutch trio treat us to the essential (and previously unheard) extended mix, plus a trio of reworks from industry pals. Mason kicks things off with a vibrant and colourful take that re-casts the track as a delay-laden chunk of 1980s NYC freestyle, Xinobi opts for a bass-heavy deep nu-disco flex, and Ash Reynolds re-imagines it as a swinging chunk of lusciously sun-kissed deep house with warming boogie flourishes.
