Review: Columbian producer Felipe Gordon joins forces with Belgian artist Krewcial in an exciting collaborative EP, immersing listeners into their shared sonic universe. Inspired by their mutual passion for cycling, this EP takes you on a thrilling journey through various textures and terrains, transcending into moments of luminosity while delving into deep atmospheres. The EP commences with "1972", a captivating opening that blends intricate percussion with a compelling, driving bassline, akin to conquering steep hills during a cycling expedition. Next up is "Dying", featuring uplifting choir vocals that infuse a gospel-inspired sensibility into the undeniably funky bassline. Following is "Answer", navigating between clean and satisfying kick drums, interspersed with sharp snares while Session Victim is offering a beautifully ethereal reinterpretation.

Review: Here's something of a surprise: an appearance from long-serving French beat-maker, re-editor and bootleg remix king Krewcial on Dam Swindle's house-focused Heist Recordings imprint. Even more surprisingly, the four-track EP explores the veteran producer's love of Afrobeat, Afro-funk, and Afro-disco, combining classic-sounding instrumentation (including Fela-esque horns and guitar licks), with contemporary dancefloor grooves. There's much to set the pulse racing throughout, from the modern Afrobeat bounce of 'Owo' and Africa 70-goes-house flex of 'Kitoko', to the heavy Afro-disco-meets-Afro-funk brilliance of 'Wahala Dey', featuring Nimiwari, and the percussion-rich Afro-disco-goes-Afro-house excellence of 'Ghana Groove'.

Review: Phil Weeks' long-running French house/deep house label Robsoul Recordings round up the best of their 2020 output in one high-VFM package. As per Robsoul's MO generally, you won't find a lot in the way of navel-gazing introspection or pointless, self-indulgent experimentalism here - Robsoul have always specialised in dropping beats to move your feets and this year's crop doesn't disappoint! The wonky, jazzy garage of The Mekanism's 'Signs', the raw jack of Joss Moog's 'So Good So Fresh', Demuir's strutty hip-houser 'Nice And Dutty' and Jade Cox's looping, west coast-ish 'Realise' are just some of the highlights of a fine collection.

Review: It may have been a pretty rubbish year in general, but Midnight Riot has done its best to keep us entertained via a wealth of disco and boogie-centric EPs. If you missed out on many of the label's 2020 treats, don't worry, because they've gathered together the best of their recent output on this epic compilation. Drawing on original nu-disco, revivalist disco, feel-good house, synth-heavy boogie sounds and gently tooled-up edits, highlights are predictably plentiful. Our picks include the summery soulful house goodness of 'Nothing But the Music (Hotevilla Mix)' by Platinum City, the nu-boogie brilliance of Qwestlife's remix of 'Savage' by Tommy Glasses, the loopy disco-house joy of Mottes 'The Horse Ride' and Yam Who's 'Full Vocal Mix' of Sam Shelley's sunshine disco number 'Groove It'.

Review: When it comes to celebratory, life-affirming musical positivity, you can't beat Midnight Riot's ongoing "Disco Made Me Do It" compilation series, which gathers together a mixture of re-edits, reworks and original productions from the label's vast roster of artists. At 24 tracks deep it's a bit of an epic, though we can happily confirm that the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout. Our current favourites include the Redux Inc re-edit of Casa Blanco's P-funk flavoured hip-wiggler, "Funk & Dub With You", the rushing, piano-powered house bounce of "Got Me" by Ladies on Mars, label boss Yam Who's sparkling nu-boogie revision of Phil Jaimes' "My Sensitivity" and the deep, groovy '80s soul flex of Chevals' "Thank You For The Ride".

Review: Definitely an atypical release from Robsoul, this one: you might normally associate the label with filter disco cut-ups, Sneak/Wild Pitch-style jackers or headnoddin' deep house groovers, but probably not with the kind of gospel-drenched soulful vibes served up here! That's by no means a complaint, though, and 'Joy' with its full-choir vocal will go down a storm on soulful house floors without a doubt. 'Perfect', meanwhile, is a tuffer, more garage-y cut, and as such could find favour with deep and soulful house jocks alike, or indeed anywhere else a nagging two-chord organ riff and female vocal chops sound like their idea of a good time.

Review: Since launching in 2018, Midnight Riot's gospel-fired "Take It To Church" compilation series has proved hugely popular, hence this third volume of re-edits, remixes and sample-heavy original productions. As usual, there's much to set the pulse racing from start to finish, with highlights including the jazz-funk fired soulful house bump of Opolopo's remix of "Follow Me" by Sense of Sound Singers, the gospel disco/disco-house fusion of Sarah Dash's "Something Inside (DJ Spen & Reelsoul Remix)", the rubbery goodness of Carlton Low's 1980s sounding "Peace, Love, Happiness", the gospel-boogie brilliance of Jack Tennis's filter-heavy "Won't You" and the gospel scalpel science that is Divine Situation's superb "Goin' On" re-edit.
Review: Last year Krewcial plied his wares on a variety of well-regarded labels, most notably Robsoul Recordings and Let's Play House. Here the Belgian producer kick-starts 2020 via an impressively expansive EP on Midnight Riot. We can imagine righteous, gospel-tinged piano-house opener "His Name" becoming a peak-time anthem in both disco and house clubs, while gospel-disco edit "Each Night" and bouncy, horn-laden Afro-funk cut "Mabina" are also superb. The set also boasts two alternate takes on "His Name": a cheery, warehouse-ready "Chitown Mix" and the slightly more gospel-fired "Harlem Stomp Mix".
Review: Midnight Right's Afrobeat, Afro-funk and Afro-disco inspired "Riot In Lagos" compilation is arguably one of the label's standout releases of the last few years, so it's exciting to hear that volume two is on the way. To give us a taste of what's to come, the Yam Who-helmed imprint has offered up this rock solid sampler. Krewcial kicks things off via the jaunty, sax-heavy brilliance of "Mabina" - a kind of swinging, bass-heavy disco tribute to Fela Kuti - before Get To Know cheerily dance through mid-80s Nigerian boogie/synth-soul pastures on the wonderful "Fugar" re-edit. The EP also boasts two versions of Situation's Afro-centric cut "Wonky": a deep and jazzy Afro-house version by Frank Situation rich in glistening jazz guitar solos, and an even hazier and more hypnotic Mr Mulatto take.

Review: Under the Krewcial alias, Pascal Garner has enjoyed an interesting career. He first rose to prominence in the late '90s as a hip-hop beat-maker, but for the last few years he's excelled at what his bio describes as "sample-based boom-bap house". If you want to know what that sounds like, check this expansive EP on Robsoul. It begins with a heavily chopped and filter disco-house cut in the French Touch style ("About You") and ends with a driving slab of early morning house rich in ear-catching piano riffs and chopped-up vocal samples. In between you'll find four more reasons to be cheerful, with the low-down sleaziness of "Davis", bustling "Nighttrain" and relaxed disco-house bumper "Flash" standing out.
Review: With a production history that stretches right back to the mid 1990s, Krewcial (real name Pascal Garnier) has long been a reliable source of high quality dancefloor fare. As you'd expect, his latest contribution to We Play House's "TEN" series is full of tightly produced, tried-and-tested material. Our pick of the bunch is ludicrously heavy closing cut "Tadao", where loose additional percussion hits and mind-altering TB-303 acid lines rise above a thumping drum machine rhythm. The quality threshold never dips elsewhere on the EP, though, with hypnotic post-Italo/early house throb-job "Proto" and the bouncy piano house retro-futurism of "Plaster" also hitting home hard.

Review: While gospel has always been a strong influence in the worlds of house and disco, the volume of spiritually charged dancefloor tracks has rocketed in recent times. Hence this fine compilation from Midnight Riot and "gospel supremo" the Showfa, which gathers together new, recent and overlooked gospel-fired dancefloor jams. We're particularly enjoying Yam Who and Alan Dixon's brilliant new version of the Soup Dragons' "I'm Free" - think classic, Balearic-era baggy house with more prominence given to the London Gospel Choir's vocals and Dixon's wild organ lines - Le Visiteur's low-slung re-edit of an old gospel-disco gem ("Let The Sunshine") and the rubbery boogie-gospel-goes-filter-house excitement of Benjamin Ferreira's "What U Will". That said, there's barely a duffer to be found amongst the 19 tracks on show, with the emphasis rightly on celebratory positivity throughout.
