Review: Following a series of releases for Arms & Legs and Watergate - where she is also resident DJ - Kristin Velvet now makes her debut on Ovum. "Trockenfutter" is a tripped-out techno affair. Powered by a rubbery, elastic bass, she adds eerie, half-heard vocals and insistent percussion to the arrangement - the end result is a track that's tailor made for early morning experiences. The title track is more direct. Centred on rolling tribal drums and chiming bells, these elements make for a hypnotic, heads-down workout. Label boss Josh Wink's rework of "Slater Hills" is designed for peak time use, as dark clouds of acid swarm in over crashing snares.

Review: This year saw Berlin clubbing institution Watergate turn 20 years old. To celebrate the milestone, they took the experience outside the club for a full weekend rave, plus the release of this mammoth 20 track compilation of new and unreleased tracks. Highlights come from legendary artists such as the ever reliable Henrik Schwarz who appears with the highly engineered soul of "You Need Attitude", veteran of the scene Sasha gets a seriously heads-down groove happening on "Wolf Cider", Hamburg maximal heroes Extrawelt deliver as expected on the hypnotising "Rover" and former Mobilee co-head Anja Schneider gets the hands in the air on the uplifting house of "Can't You See Me No More?' plus many others.

Review: Fresh off a kickin' release by label Daniel Steinberg just last week, Berlin's Arms & Legs are straight back at it with label co-head Kristin Velvet serving up some similarly smooth house on "Memories" on which the Watergate resident takes elements of Chicago house and Detroit techno and presents them in a fresh format. Her track from last year "Eat The Drum" receives a powerful remix by Brighton duo Prok & Fitch, who inject a druggy, bass heavy bounce into the Eat The Drum Remix, while the Eat The Groove Remix goes down a slinky minimal tech house route.

Review: Berlin-based Aussie Kristin Velvet appears outside of the Arms & Legs label that she runs with Daniel Steinberg & Nils Ohrmann with this killer EP for Hot Since 82's ever reliable Knee Deep In Sound. Carrying the same infectious energy as last year's collaboration with Chicago legend Felix Da Housecat, "Rally 69" is a tight, bass-driven groove that works those percussive elements to hypnotic effect. This is followed by the dark and minimalistic "Echo Belly" that's sure to get those moments of tunnel vision happening under the strobe. Finally, British veteran Mark Broom (Beardman) then steps up to deliver a typically steely and austere rework up next.

Review: Arms & Legs is a Berlin based house and techno label founded in 2011 by Daniel Steinberg and Nils Ohrmann, that they now run together with Kristin Velvet. Over the past decade, Aussie Kristin Velvet's life has been devoted to music in one way or another - first as a promoter and DJ in Tokyo, then as the Australian label manager of UK's Domino Records and today - where she is an essential figure of Berlin's club scene. As the track title "Marshall & Pierre" may let on - this is indeed a classic house affair where she has enlisted the vocal talents of Windy City legend Felix Da Housecat over her bouncy and nostalgic groove. Second offering "It's Hot" is a stomping acid house workout that takes it cues from Chicago's second wave - namely the sound of the seminal Relief Records in the early to mind '90s.
