Review: V is for victory! Bryan Gee and Jumpin Jack Frost's label continues to mark three whole decades with the second volume of their 30 Years VA. First up is a VIP of L-Side's already flattening remix of Krust's 'Not Necessarily A Man' before Alibi and A-Audio go toe-to-toe on the soulful bruiser 'Middlemen' where a big funk sample gets battered into submission but an equally stunning Reese. Last but not least Level 2 closes the EP down with another VIP treat - 'Bite The Bone'. Woof woof!

Review: Pull the trigger! Krust is back with the penultimate volume of his 'Irrational Numbers' series that digs deep into his Full Cycle, Talkin Loud, Dope Dragon and V Recordings output throughout the 90s and early 2000s. As always there are unreleased gems of yore; this time a tripped out twist on 'Asian Dance' and an alternative mix to the beautifully vibrant 'Burnin'. Elsewhere we have the bassline bumper V classic '21st Century', the quintessential Bristol anthem 'Angles' and the venomous 99-era hip-fronted battering ram with Saul Williams 'Coded Language'. What a selection from an endless trove. No one comes close to Krust.

Review: Krust continues to dig deep into his seminal vaults for the Irrational Numbers series. Stretching back through his entire discography, this one takes us back to the most historical Krust record of all - 'Resistor', the dreamy ravey cut that got the attention of Bryan Gee (who signed Krust and fellow Bristol cats to V) AND launched the fledgling Full Circle label (which later became the iconic Full Cycle) Elsewhere we're treated to the unreleased likes of 'Colours Black' and iconic cuts like 'Soul In Motion' which is such a blueprint there's a whole night named in tribute of it. Krust has forever been in a league of his own.

Cast your eyes down Crosstown's curation and you'll find heavy hitters like UNKLE and Calibre in the mix next to Four Tet and more contemporary club focused acts like Batu, Flynn, LCY and Hodge. But perhaps what makes this release such a wildcard success is the transatlantic house combinations of DJ Nature, Damian Lazarus himself, and true legends of the scene - Masters At Work.

Review: A legend in the house to be spoken in the same sentence as Ed Rush, Optical, Zinc and Roni Size, Bristol's own Krust takes it strangeways on Crosstown Rebels - and the label's third installment of album remixes. Diving back into that deep and hopeful sound of '90s drum and bass, breakbeat and soul is a rare UNKLE remix of "Hegel Dialect", that like Hodge's remake of "Constructive Ambiguity" lifts its inspiration of course from the halcyon days of hardcore, jungle and rave with ghostly atmospheres to boot. With a most fitting wildcard entrant to cap off this great remix series - that has so far included Masters At Work, Four Tet, Damian Lazarus, Batu, Calibre, LCY and Flynn - sweet New Yorkian house vibes and ambient percussion come through in DJ Nature's remix of "Deep Fields Of Liars". Krust & Crosstown equals result!

Review: Legend of the Bristol drum and bass scene - coming up alongside the likes of Roni Size, DJ Zinc and Photek back in the day - sees himself in 2020 working alongside Damian Lazarus label Crosstown Rebels. Having released his The Edge Of Everything album to critical acclaim (his first LP since 2006) on CR, a first remix installment was introduced earlier this year with a sweet double pack from Masters At Work. Bigger yet is this remix scoop featuring local Bristol associate (and Timedance boss) Batu with a darkly, bass-heavy and percussive twist on TEOE's penultimate track "Space Oddity", with Damian Lazurus himself turning an originally downbeat stepper into a wormholing deep house banger with some sweet claps to hold on to through the dark. Adding some sprinkles of light to this EP is Four Tet's interpretation of "Negative Returns" that still hurtles in velocity and sub-bass, with Kieran Hebden revealing upon its release: "this is the first D&B track I've ever made!"

Blurring the lines between jungle and techno, your brain and the dancefloor, time and space, across the collection the Bristol pioneer takes us to some strange and singular places; the tension and sci-fi isolation of 'Known Truths', the swaggering space funk of 'Keter The Heavenly', the marching drama and powerful sense of foreboding on 'Negative Returns', the blitzkrieg amen-shattered opener 'Hegel Dialectic', the list goes on. Each cut building and merging to create a truly unique landscape that offers up something new on every investigation, it'll take another 14 years to unravel this album's many mysteries. Essential.

Review: Bryan Gee and V Recordings do not mess around. They never have in the past, they're certainly not right now in the present and judging by this highly anticipated Future album, they're going to mess around any time ahead. 25 tracks from some of the biggest, best and baddest names in D&B (Dillina, Serum, Benny L, Paul T & Edward Oberon, Roni Size, DJ Marky, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Bladerunner, Saxxon, the list goes on) this one's been a long, long, long time coming... And it's been well worth the wait. From L-Sides massive remixes of Dillinja and Krust to Need For Mirrors super-revved "Lambo" to Benny L's incredible remix of "Days", this sums up why Bryan and his label are as influential and respected in the game as they are today. Don't mess around.

Review: V Recordings do some of the best compilations in the business and their brand new Foundation series is a natural recognition of that fact. They're not being hyperbolic with the usage of the term 'Foundation' either, because this is truly an overview of some of the scene's most foundational producers. Old-school Dillinja, Krust, Roni Size and DJ Die, amongst others, make up the roster of acts that formed an integral part of the genre back in the day. The new crew is also represented, however, in the form of L-Side, Think Tonk, Nasza Linez and loads more, all of whom bring some of that V-style heat. Wicked album - one for the heads.

Review: Let's just list the amount of stone cold bass OGs on this collection: Krust, dBridge, Om Unit, Danny Scrilla, V.I.V.E.K, Von D, Moresounds, AU, Oris Jay & Chris Innersound and whole load more of soundsystem culture's most innovative craftsman working at the deepest levels of the low end coalface all feature on this immense and forward thinking document. Including the curator Amit himself. Every track is a highlight, each one and abyssal, immersive experience but essential highlights include the toxic bass bounces of Moresounds' "They Can't Handle It", the 23rd century UKG of Oris and Chris's "They Can't Handle It" and Krust's big screen masterpiece "Escape From Finland". Amit deserves a holiday. Or a massive trophy. Or both. Bass compilations don't get much bigger than this.

Review: Krust going back to his epic jams on a label as consistently on point and influential as ThirtyOne? We seriously don't deserve this! Fully immersive, cinematic adventures that don't hurry to fly out with big drop histrionics, these are class-A "Genetic Manipulation" era narratives to truly lose yourself inside. "The Portal" hurls us into deep space with it space with its relentless two-step, warp-speed bass sweeps and subtle developments while "Concealing Treachery" oozes out with an eerie intro, skippy beats and a springy robot funk to the bass. Classic Krust, no one does D&B like this man.

Review: Oh boy... We should have known Dom & Roland had big things in store when the third release in this long-lost series came from Dillinja. Now comes the second hugely influential guest - the mighty DJ Krust. And he's given Dom two incendiary classics that have been the sole preserve of DAT and acetate for the last 20 years. "Ivory Puzzle" is the sound of Krust snapping up his (cloaking) devices while "Flip It" comes from the Soul In Motion era where a simple groove rolls out and its subtle variations maintain raw suspense and class. Two more total gems from the drum & bass's strongest foundation chapter.

Review: V Recordings: A genus source for drum and bass, the launch pad of so many great careers it's not worth counting and still a consistent source of forward-thinking beats. If any label can justify five volumes of back-cat badness, it's Bryan Gee's. Going right back to 1993 (Roni Size's "Timestretch"), we whistle, rattle and roll past some of the label's (and scene in general's) titans. Dillinja is repped hard with an array of discography highlights such as the shattered amen attack plan ("Bad Man"), Krust is paid in full with cuts such as the minimal muscle roller "Set Speed", jungle godfather Sappo reminds us of real old school with "Into The Light" while Future Cut's later-era "Prophecy" is rewound to great effect. And that's just five of the album's 21 chapters. A must read document for junglists old and young.

Review: Labels, artists and websites all tend to adopt a retrospective tone as the end of a year gets ever closer, so it's naturally quite timely for V Recordings head honcho Bryan Gee to crank out a third volume of his excellent Retrospect series. With it comes a wealth of old jungle riddims, influential classics and long forgotten favourites from the likes of DJ Die, Roni Size, Ray Keith, Krust, Lemon D and more. Gee opens in style with the Brizzle roller "Fashion" by the legendary Roni Size and maintains the pressure throughout, dropping gems such as DJ Die's "Something Special", Krust's iconic stepper "Check Dis Out" and the jazzy, liquid loveliness of Lemon D's "Get On Down" with its shimmying, sunshine filled vibes. For a trip down memory lane, this one's essential.
