Review: Long-running Brighton stable Tru Thoughts bring us a five-track collaborative EP from Belgian producer Kuna Maze and his oppo from across the border in France, Nikitch. Opener 'ZBRA' is a languid funker that could also slot into more daring deep house sets, after which things take a turn for the jazzier. 'Bruk' is an uptempo broken beat number that'll put your footwork skills to the test, while 'JPS' is a more blissed-out, lazy Sunday kinda jam. The fast and furious 'The Leak' is another one for the jazz dancers, and then finally 'CBD' sees us (unsurprisingly, given the title!) back in mellower, more downtempo pastures.

Review: The best broken beat has always kept one eye fixed on the dancefloor rather than wandering off into pointless abstraction, and in that regard this second solo full-length from French producer Edouard Gilbert AKA Kuna Maze does not disappoint one iota. Its 13 tracks combine the smoky, late-night vibe of a jazz club with the headnodding, hypnotic quality of deep house and, in many places, the heavy bowel-bothering bass of the UK garage that was such a key ingredient in the original bruk beat melting pots of west London 20 years ago. Throw in a snatch of R&B vox here, a handful of wonked-out synth flourishes there, and you've got an engaging long player that'll repay repeat listening
